I am a huge component of constant feedback. A session may be wasted if feedback is only provided in the last five minutes. For this reason, I would help students stay motivated by maintaining a conversation over the material and relating to other interesting aspects of their life. Hobbies: books, reading, writing, music, art, sports

I am able to determine what obstacles are preventing a student from grasping a concept, and create different means of overcoming those obstacles. Creating a partnership with the student and understanding what he or she needs to overcome is what makes me a great tutor.

I am an undergraduate at Rice University, and my favorite subjects to tutor are math and science. I also enjoy doing test prep, and my experience comes from helping fellow students in high school. One of the most important aspects of tutoring is fitting the teaching style to each student. One method that works great for one student may not work well for another. Tutoring is all about coming up with different ways for my students to understand the material. If my student is not interested in the subject we are learning, I will try to find a way to tie in their interests and passions into the subject to better engage them. I want to be there for my students, not only as a tutor, but also as a friend. In addition to my interests in math and science (and learning in general), I enjoy swimming, biking, reading, and cooking. I also believe that fostering curiosity and determination are the keys to success. Hobbies: art, books, reading, cooking, music, swimming, writing

I am a science writer and podcaster with a rigorous academic background who is passionate about sharing my knowledge of chemistry with curious minds. I earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and Asian art history from UC Berkeley and completed a PhD in inorganic chemistry at MIT. I have five years of experience teaching college-level general and organic chemistry courses at various institutions in California, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas, and hope to expand on my experience as a private tutor. Often a required subject for other classes, chemistry is often considered "the central science" as it's related to biology and physics, and I appreciate that chemical principles can be observed throughout daily life from cooking to medicine to electronics. I believe that education is the world's greatest social equalizer and hope that my students learn to make new connections between classes and other aspects of their life. Outside of science, I love dogs, food, and the outdoors.

I am a graduate from Stanford University. I received my Bachelor's in Economics there and continued to receive a certificate in Full Stack Web Development from the University of Texas Austin. I have tutored intermittently, primarily teaching test prep; however, I have at different points taught most everything. Here in the Houston area, I've worked with Testmasters, C2 Education and Test Geek. I implement the Socratic Method into my teaching style: I ask plenty of questions that force students to deeply understand the material and to explain how they know why their answer is correct or not. I also believe it is my duty to equip students with tools to become better learners themselves which entails welcoming unique and creative approaches to solving problems, encouraging students to connect the relationships between different topics and subjects, and recommending using external sources and materials to learn and supplement understanding. Hobbies: art, travel, sports, reading, writing, books, traveling, music

I am a multi-subject polymath with great and depth in what I teach who always places the needs, desires and dreams of students first. A Lifelong Scholar focused on Excellence, my praxis seeks to empower those I I teach by infecting them with passion for critical thinking and awakening and nurturing their "I know I can! Let's do it!" energies. Comfortable with technology, I strive to continually improve teaching and learning processes so my tutees become adept at turning information into knowledge. Champion, then, of scholars' growth both individually and communally/collaboratively, I guide them to learn where, when, how and why to take control individually and when to trust the team. At the core of my methodology is the ability to listen: My students, then, can become adepts at PEARLS (Partnership, Empathy, Apology/Acknowledgment, Respect, Legitimation, and Support), not only "listening to" but "hearing" interlocutors in this increasingly multi-vocal/valent world. Consequently equitable, suitable, ethical and sustainable solutions with clear benefits for all stakeholders in the learning transaction can emerge. And because "we" this includes me the Champion and Guide willingly created this result, "we/they" willingly accept and acknowledge the outcome, willingly "owning it." It is "our buck."

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors connects students across Mesquite's 50 schools and serves families throughout the district. With over 38,000 students in the area, we work with learners at all grade levels—from elementary through high school—helping them succeed with personalized 1-on-1 instruction tailored to their specific needs and school curriculum.
Texas has specific learning standards across subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies. Tutors connect with students to target areas where they need extra support—whether that's mastering TEKS standards, preparing for state assessments, or building foundational skills. Personalized instruction helps students progress at their own pace while staying aligned with what their Mesquite schools are teaching.
Students for students in Mesquite seek tutoring most often in math, reading and language arts, science, and test prep (including SAT and ACT preparation). Many students also benefit from help with algebra, geometry, chemistry, and writing skills—subjects that build critical foundations for high school success and college readiness. Tutors can also support students with Spanish language learning and other subjects based on individual needs.
The first session is focused on getting to know your student—their learning style, current strengths, challenges, and goals. Tutors will assess what your student understands and where they need support, then create a personalized plan moving forward. This foundation helps ensure every future session is targeted and effective for your student's specific needs.
While Mesquite schools maintain a solid 14.9:1 average student-teacher ratio, teachers still manage diverse classrooms with students at different skill levels and learning speeds. One-on-one tutoring fills that gap by giving your student undivided attention, allowing tutors to adjust pace, teaching style, and content to match exactly what your student needs—something that's difficult in a classroom setting.
Tutors can work directly with your student on the exact material they're learning in their Mesquite classroom—whether it's a tough unit in algebra, essay writing, or science concepts. By breaking down difficult topics, answering questions without time pressure, and providing targeted practice, tutoring helps build confidence and understanding. Many students see improvement in grades and engagement within a few weeks of consistent sessions.
Yes. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who specialize in SAT prep (covering the 400-1600 scale), ACT prep (1-36 scale), AP exam preparation, and other standardized tests. Tutors create personalized study plans, teach test-taking strategies, and provide practice with real exam questions—helping students build skills and confidence before test day.
Varsity Tutors works with the reality of Mesquite student schedules—whether your student is in sports, extracurriculars, or managing a heavy course load. Sessions can be scheduled around your family's availability, and tutors can adjust frequency and timing as needs change throughout the school year. This flexibility helps students get consistent support without adding stress to their schedules.
