I am a huge component of constant feedback. A session may be wasted if feedback is only provided in the last five minutes. For this reason, I would help students stay motivated by maintaining a conversation over the material and relating to other interesting aspects of their life.

I am able to determine what obstacles are preventing a student from grasping a concept, and create different means of overcoming those obstacles. Creating a partnership with the student and understanding what he or she needs to overcome is what makes me a great tutor.

I am an undergraduate at Rice University, and my favorite subjects to tutor are math and science. I also enjoy doing test prep, and my experience comes from helping fellow students in high school. One of the most important aspects of tutoring is fitting the teaching style to each student. One method that works great for one student may not work well for another. Tutoring is all about coming up with different ways for my students to understand the material. If my student is not interested in the subject we are learning, I will try to find a way to tie in their interests and passions into the subject to better engage them. I want to be there for my students, not only as a tutor, but also as a friend. In addition to my interests in math and science (and learning in general), I enjoy swimming, biking, reading, and cooking. I also believe that fostering curiosity and determination are the keys to success. Hobbies: art, books, reading, cooking, music, swimming, writing

I am a graduate from Stanford University. I received my Bachelor's in Economics there and continued to receive a certificate in Full Stack Web Development from the University of Texas Austin. I have tutored intermittently, primarily teaching test prep; however, I have at different points taught most everything. Here in the Houston area, I've worked with Testmasters, C2 Education and Test Geek. I implement the Socratic Method into my teaching style: I ask plenty of questions that force students to deeply understand the material and to explain how they know why their answer is correct or not. I also believe it is my duty to equip students with tools to become better learners themselves which entails welcoming unique and creative approaches to solving problems, encouraging students to connect the relationships between different topics and subjects, and recommending using external sources and materials to learn and supplement understanding. Hobbies: art, travel, sports, reading, writing, books, traveling, music

I am a multi-subject polymath with great and depth in what I teach who always places the needs, desires and dreams of students first. A Lifelong Scholar focused on Excellence, my praxis seeks to empower those I I teach by infecting them with passion for critical thinking and awakening and nurturing their "I know I can! Let's do it!" energies. Comfortable with technology, I strive to continually improve teaching and learning processes so my tutees become adept at turning information into knowledge. Champion, then, of scholars' growth both individually and communally/collaboratively, I guide them to learn where, when, how and why to take control individually and when to trust the team. At the core of my methodology is the ability to listen: My students, then, can become adepts at PEARLS (Partnership, Empathy, Apology/Acknowledgment, Respect, Legitimation, and Support), not only "listening to" but "hearing" interlocutors in this increasingly multi-vocal/valent world. Consequently equitable, suitable, ethical and sustainable solutions with clear benefits for all stakeholders in the learning transaction can emerge. And because "we" this includes me the Champion and Guide willingly created this result, "we/they" willingly accept and acknowledge the outcome, willingly "owning it." It is "our buck."

I am graduate of Brown University, where I received a degree in Economics and studied topics ranging from Computer Science and Applied Math to Literary Arts and Philosophy. I even helped create a class during my senior year, working together with other students to write a syllabus, gather reading materials, schedule guest speakers, and ultimately, present the results to an academic dean for course credit. After graduation, I moved to Hong Kong, where I worked at a a summer program at the University of Hong Kong, in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, as a Teaching Assistant in a Game Theory class for advanced middle school students. After the program ended, I traveled around Asia, visiting places in Malaysia and Vietnam before eventually returning to the American South, where, as a native North Carolinian, I feel at home. I usually prefer tutoring in subjects involving math and social sciences but I am very flexible. Outside of education, I love playing guitar and piano, and I have released music both as a solo artist and as part of a band. I also like to play disc golf and lacrosse and enjoy participating in fantasy football.

I'm a student at Vanderbilt University pursuing a BA in Cognitive Studies and a minor in Corporate Strategies. I have worked at the Mama Lere Hearing School at the Vanderbilt Medical Center for deaf preschoolers as well as volunteered as a first grade Sunday School teacher. In addition, I have had multiple ongoing volunteer positions as a tutor in schools in low-income areas in the subjects of Algebra I/II and English Language Arts. I have had the privilege of helping these students rise up beyond the any expectations, and I believe that a large part of their success comes not only from tutoring but from mentorship. Building a strong relationship with the student is first and foremost to being an effective tutor. I have strong skills in assessing the student's needs and meeting them where they are at. Hobbies: reading, writing, books, music, baking, art, travel

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Longview's four school districts, serving learners from the area's 38 schools. Whether your student attends a school in Longview ISD, Hallsville ISD, Gladewater ISD, or another district in the area, we can match them with a tutor who understands the local curriculum and Texas academic standards.
Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to focus on the specific Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards your student needs to master, rather than keeping pace with a classroom of 13-14 students. Tutors can identify gaps in foundational skills and build targeted lesson plans that align with what Longview schools are teaching, helping students catch up or get ahead.
Students in Longview frequently seek support in math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, and test prep for STAAR exams. We also work with students preparing for AP courses, SAT/ACT college entrance exams, and those needing help with writing skills—all critical for success in Texas schools and beyond.
While Longview's average student-teacher ratio of 13.7:1 is solid, classroom instruction still needs to serve diverse learning levels and paces. Personalized tutoring fills gaps that classroom teachers can't address individually, providing focused attention on your student's specific challenges, learning style, and academic goals—whether that's mastering a difficult concept or preparing for a major exam.
During the first session, the tutor will assess your student's current skill level, understand their academic goals, and identify specific areas where they need support. This diagnostic approach helps create a personalized learning plan tailored to your student's needs and aligned with what they're learning in their Longview school.
Absolutely. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors experienced in STAAR test preparation across all grade levels and subjects. Tutors can help students understand test format, practice with released items, build test-taking strategies, and strengthen the foundational skills measured by these important Texas assessments.
Tutoring sessions can be scheduled around your student's school day, extracurriculars, and family commitments. Whether your student needs regular weekly sessions or intensive prep before a major exam or deadline, Varsity Tutors works with your family's schedule to provide consistent, personalized support.
Varsity Tutors connects students with expert tutors who have strong subject knowledge and experience working with students at various levels. Tutors understand Texas curriculum standards and can explain concepts in ways that click for individual learners—helping Longview students build confidence and see real academic progress.
