Recent Closter Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Andrew in Closter, NJ
The student and I started off our session by going over the subject that he is currently learning in class, operations on functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition of two functions). In addition to simply performing the operations, we also worked on determining the domains of the resulting functions. He had a pretty good handle on this subject, so after we went through a worksheet he had and did a few extra examples from a textbook I have, we decided to review some subjects that he had questions on earlier in the semester. I gave some short review "mini-lectures" on graphing functions, factoring polynomials, and finding zeros of functions. After each lecture, we worked through a few example problems from my textbook to test his understanding. For the last portion of our session, we worked through some extra practice problems of the material from last week (radicals, fractional exponents, and simplifying exponents) since he was still not feeling 100% confident on the subject. We will review this material at the next session.

Tutoring review by Greg in Closter, NJ
We finalized our review of concepts for the upcoming test on Thursday. The student took an online quiz that was given by his professor and got a 10/10 on the quiz. There were a couple of questions where I needed to give him gentle reminders about algebra concepts, but he understood and carried out the derivative rules fluently. The student is to print out the review test that his instructor gave him, cut out the answers, and spend about 2 hours doing the questions. He is to check his answers with the ones provided and come to our session on Thursday with where he made his errors and what further questions he has after doing the practice test.

Tutoring review by Joel in Closter, NJ
The student did an excellent job today, as we reviewed ordering numbers and began some early division work. He was able to successfully order and compare numbers with little to no help from me, and was very impressive in utilizing the advice that I provided him in previous sessions. We then began some early work with division, which he was excited to start. He was able to use his knowledge and skills to determine the answers for basic division problems. On Thursday, I plan to escalate to some 3-digit problems. We will also start working on money-related math.

Today in session we covered the quiz the student had prior to our meeting. Overall the session was productive. It seemed that she was having issues with proofs and their structure. After some examples and explanations I feel that she has a better grasp on the concepts.
