In today's increasingly global society, the ability to communicate efficiently is more important than ever. Mandarin is the single most spoken language in the world, not only among China's 1.6 billion people, but can be found in even the small corners of the world via Chinese who have left home to open businesses in other nations. Chinese restaurants are ubiquitous in every nation on earth, and there are Chinese-speaking people in every profession. To be able to speak Mandarin understandably is a skill that can benefit any individual in too many areas to list.Speaking Mandarin is not as simple as taking Chinese language courses. Written Mandarin is 'formal', and a stilted way of talking. As a single syllable language, where all words are differentiated by 'tones', incorrect pronunciation of those tones can lead to small, and large, communication misunderstandings.Conversational Mandarin is different from written Mandarin. The only way to learn, is to actually do it. Not one word at a time, but one sentence, one paragraph at a time. This not only provides the words and the correct grammatical structure, it is also easier to remember, because you have a context for those random sounds. Using a language makes you more confident of your speaking skills, and makes further learning that much easier.I am a native Chinese speaker, with no accent in either English or Chinese. I learned both languages simultaneously. I continually spoke/speak Mandarin at home, and of course, English everywhere else. This ensures that my ability to speak, as vocabulary and pronunciation do not change over time. To this day, my mom reinforces my language skills by enforcing the rule that if I want to communicate with her, I will speak in Mandarin only! I love talking to my mom, and we talk every single day. My mom was a journalist in Taiwan before moving to the US, her Mandarin diction is the standard which newscasters in China and Taiwan still follow.My degree is from Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service. I took 5 years of German in High School, scored a 90 on my AATG Language Proficiency test, which is 'native speaker' level German. It was painful for me to have a casual conversation with a German speaker, because I had insufficient practical and casual speaking practice. Over the years, this early deficiency made me hesitant to practice and I eventually lost motivation to keep up with it. We typically learn languages out of context for their common usage, and this is where a tutor can help. Use it or lose it. The more comfortable you are using it, the more likely you will.Currently, I am a licensed Florida real estate agent. I enjoy helping students with mandarin because I believe that better communication with other cultures benefits everyone, and my own children are now college aged. If you took the time to learn mandarin, I can probably help you reinforce it enough that you will always have a functional base to expand on.I will first evaluate what the student wants to accomplish. Do you wish to learn Mandarin for travel? For negotiating business deals? To understand the culture better, or work with colleagues in the medical, archeological, scientific, engineering professions? (for this, I will need a list of specific terminology used in your profession to review). I can work up a tutoring plan that is tailored for that specific students and their needs, after evaluating in a few sessions exactly where your specific deficiencies are.After every session, my student should walk away with more language confidence, and a very specific verbal response set for a particular purpose.I do not teach written Chinese characters. I only cover verbal pronunciation, correct conversational form, both formal and informal. The only written form I would go over is the Hanyu Pinyin system (roman alphabetized written form). In many major cities in China and Taiwan, many street signs and businesses use pinyin spelled out, so learning pinyin can be more than just a helpful phonetic/memory exercise.I request that all students have already taken some Chinese, so it is not entirely new, and we are working on being able to converse understandably for your specific needs. How long this process takes is up to you, based on how quickly you learn, your focus and dedication, and how much effort you spend reviewing and practicing what you have learned. I recall the difficulty of wrapping my head around specific concepts in chemistry, physics, and biology classes. My early struggles were amplified by my lackluster enthusiasm to understand why even this knowledge was relevant. Often times I would feel disconnected with what I was learning. This issue affected my foundational knowledge in sciences and it took me time to realize that without understanding the basics it becomes seemingly impossible to incur further knowledge. It is evident that many concepts are a continuum and by building upon previous knowledge can help consolidate new information. I find this as a paradigm in my learning philosophy; to thoroughly understand an essential point before moving on to the next subject. By retaining the foundational knowledge, it is much easier to apply and visit new, complex, information. Moreover, I believe learning is parceled into various tasks from listening, reading, writing, practicing and ultimately teaching to fully understand and retain new information. This is known as the ‘learning pyramid’ and can be very useful as a template.I constantly apply the ‘learning pyramid’ throughout my studies, beginning with attentive hearing at the basic level and reinforcing the subject material by reading and writing notes. After I felt confident with handling the material, group discussions can help reconsolidate the details and further solidify the major points. I truly believe that group work, used correctly, can help facilitate comprehension. This strategy was useful during my masters at Georgetown University, an accelerated one year program, which focused on physiology and biophysics aligning with the medical school curriculum. I was able to excel in the system-based modules by utilizing a steady academic focus alone and supplemented with group discussions between 3 to 4 students. During these group discussions, I realized the influence of teaching my fellow peers on improving my own interpretation. This marked the beginning of my interests in tutoring, specifically subjects that I am enthusiastic about. These include chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, anatomy, pathophysiology, and other science based subjects.My fellow group members and I would teach each other the material, we would practice explaining out individual thought process. Originally from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, I graduated from Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service in 2018 with a degree in International Economics. I have a fervent passion for education which is reflected through my six years of one-on-one tutoring throughout university and continued after graduation. I currently live in Orlando, FL and work both as a full-time parent as well as a part-time online English language tutor to students in China, and I plan to matriculate at law school in Fall 2022. When it comes to the LSAT, I understand firsthand the amount of commitment and mental stamina that goes into preparation for this test and am eager to guide others throughout their LSAT journeys with strategies focused on consistency and accountability. I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all path to a high LSAT score. My role as your LSAT tutor is to remove the guesswork from your prep and to take into account your unique goals, schedule, and study habits to create an individualized study plan tailored to your specific needs. Additionally, our personalized tutoring sessions will allow us to efficiently target weaknesses and conquer challenging concepts and questions.

With over five years of tutoring experience, I have had the privilege of helping students build confidence in their abilities and reach their academic goals. I began tutoring in my hometown and continued throughout college, where I volunteered as a math and reading tutor with a university organizationan experience that eventually led me to become the organization's president. I hold a B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from Georgetown University and am currently pursuing a Master's in Medical Sciences at Boston University School of Medicine. My expertise lies in math and science, and I enjoy guiding students through complex concepts by tailoring my approach to their unique learning styles. I firmly believe that anyone can learn anything! It's just a matter of finding the right method that works for them! Beyond academia, I enjoy practicing yoga, playing tennis, and spending time with my dogs. I have an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and a graduate degree from Boston College. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown with a major in History and a minor in Government. I focused on both U.S. and Middle Eastern history at Georgetown, and was invited to write an Honors thesis for the History department my senior year. After graduating from Georgetown, I began my studies at Boston College where I received a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I am now a history teacher at a public school in Massachusetts, where I teach U.S. History I and II, as well as Modern U.S. History. Not surprisingly, my favorite subject to teach and to tutor is History. I am most passionate about the history of the U.S. since 1945, but as I am sure most of my students will attest, I truly do find the history of any nation or time period fascinating. I also enjoy teaching and tutoring for the SATs and other standardized exams, in part because I believe that any student can improve once he or she knows how to study, and most importantly, how to build the endurance to take a standardized test as lengthy as the SAT. I approach the SATs much in the same way that I approach running – if unit tests in school are one-mile warm-ups, then the SAT is a marathon. With the right training (and dedication), I firmly believe that any student can improve. I have taught SAT prep classes in a variety of capacities. I worked for a major SAT prep company while in graduate school, and also piloted my district’s SAT prep course (which I designed the curricula for). I take a collaborative approach to teaching, and both in the classroom and one-on-one, I believe that the best way for a student to learn material is to move beyond recall and work toward synthesis and analysis for complete understanding. When I’m not teaching or tutoring, I love to read history books (especially those about Robert Kennedy), run (long distances – in all types of weather), and travel. The most incredible place I have been is Tanzania – if I hadn’t packed three massive Teddy Roosevelt biographies in my suitcase, I definitely would have brought home many more souvenirs.

Graduated from East Carolina University with degrees in Biology and Chemistry. After a gap year which I volunteered and rediscovered my passion for animals, I spent a semester as a Teaching Assistant for Biology Lab, while also studying Bioinformatics.It was during this time that I began holding study sessions, individual and group, and increased my ability to teach and make complex information more digestible.Since then, I have worked as a personal tutor for an elementary school client and reenrolled in Graduate School studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.Helping others has always been a passion of mine and will continue to be. My pursuit of knowledge is only just beginning as my end goal is to acquire a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

I graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Government and from Fordham University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. I have ten years of experience as a volunteer and private tutor to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. I have tutored a variety of subjects ranging from math and science to standardized testing, but I especially enjoy tutoring in the areas of English, literature, and writing.I believe in creating a specialized tutoring plan to address the particular needs of my student.
