"Today we continued to cover percentages. He is working on discounts and percents off right now in pre-algebra. He didn't seem to struggle with anything; he did very well on a homework sheet from Friday. He had a positive attitude towards the material. In terms of strategies or study skills, I let him know again that these problems involve simply finding the percentage of the whole then adding it back to the whole. I left him with a couple of 'percent of a whole' word problems. He got back two quizzes. He received a 91% on one. He received an 89% on the other one. He maintained focus the whole time."

"In today's session we finished our initial review of geometry topics on the SAT. This included central and inscribed angles, area, and circumference of circles, volumes of rectangles and cylinders, and coordinate geometry. The coordinate geometry section consisted of slopes, distance formula, midpoint formula, equation of a line, x and y intercepts, and translations. The student did very well during our review - it was another great session! He knew most of the material and just needed a little review of the formulas. Most of our review today was looking at different types of problems that still tested the same underlying concepts so he can get a better feel for what the SAT questions will look like. We are going to do a practice math section in our next session, as well as cover any additional material he feels he needs some help with."

"The general theme was higher order polynomial functions. The most difficult part was, and is for everyone, rational functions. The two fundamental concepts are vertical asymptotes (i.e. when the denominator is zero), and end behavior (when x approaches infinity). I tried to emphasize as much as possible that the rest of the concepts are built off of those two ideas."

"The student and I worked on spelling, reading comprehension, and fractions. With his fractions, he was confused about how they work with decimals. I taught him how they relate using visual aids. He did well in his spelling. He passed his test, and we are moving on to the next level. In his reading comprehension, we are still working on getting him to answer the simple WWWWWH questions and seeing how well he understands what he reads. To help with his comprehension, I keep his mind active while he's reading by stopping him frequently and asking him what he has just read about. "

"We covered general integration concepts, along with the comparison of integration to the sigma approximation method, and finally did some work with acceleration and velocity. The student didn't struggle very much with any of the concepts, but was unfamiliar with integration and the steps in solving a problem involving acceleration and velocity. Through the session as she became familiar with the material she excelled at it and was able to work without aid on solving integrals. We went over some advanced material that she had yet to see in class and were able to go over two acceleration, velocity, and position problems. Overall I saw that she was a strong student with a good grasp on mathematics and the skills utilized in the field, but was simply struggling internalizing the concept of integrals."

"We went through the student's review for her exam. I explained the remaining concepts and asked her several questions to make sure she understood them. I also had a quiz ready for her to make sure she practiced the previous concepts and was ready for the test. I also gave her brother some questions to solve to force him to review the materials and study the previous ones, since he did not know what they will cover next. They are both doing well. "

"Tonight, we reviewed language arts categories for the upcoming state assessment tests. I had the student work on main idea, making inferences, using context clues, predicting outcomes, cause and effect, noting details, and sequencing. We spent some time talking about test strategies: ruling out some of the answers on multiple choice, reviewing the questions before reading the passage, inserting his name for a name in the passage, etc. He promised to check with his teacher regarding guessing vs. leaving answers blank. He is focused and works well at the given task. He is able to ignore activities in the environment and keep working. He is a pleasure to tutor!"
