Today we continued to cover percentages. He is working on discounts and percents off right now in pre-algebra. He didn't seem to struggle with anything; he did very well on a homework sheet from Friday. He had a positive attitude towards the material. In terms of strategies or study skills, I let him know again that these problems involve simply finding the percentage of the whole then adding it back to the whole. I left him with a couple of 'percent of a whole' word problems. He got back two quizzes. He received a 91% on one. He received an 89% on the other one. He maintained focus the whole time.

In today's session we finished our initial review of geometry topics on the SAT. This included central and inscribed angles, area, and circumference of circles, volumes of rectangles and cylinders, and coordinate geometry. The coordinate geometry section consisted of slopes, distance formula, midpoint formula, equation of a line, x and y intercepts, and translations. The student did very well during our review - it was another great session! He knew most of the material and just needed a little review of the formulas. Most of our review today was looking at different types of problems that still tested the same underlying concepts so he can get a better feel for what the SAT questions will look like. We are going to do a practice math section in our next session, as well as cover any additional material he feels he needs some help with.

We practiced multiplying by numbers in the 100s and basic division without remainders. For reading, we practiced finding details and sequence. For grammar we covered identifying parts of speech (nouns, common nouns, proper nouns), and we ended class with a five-minute multiplication drill. She seemed pretty motivated to do well on the material--I think she was eager to impress her friend who was with her.

The student had an assignment out of her textbook and she had it partially completed. I checked the work she had done already and everything was good. Then she had some word problems to finish the assignment and we worked through those together. Next we covered the following section that was over rate of change. We were able to get through that entire section as well.

Today, we covered several AP Calculus test questions; we analyzed given graphs and sketched corresponding graphs of the slopes of the given graphs; and, we found the derivatives of given functions, using "the limit definition of the derivative." The student's attitude was excellent, as usual.
