I am a Cornell University graduate with a strong academic background and a genuine love for tutoring. I currently work as a tutor and truly enjoy helping students feel more confident in subjects that once felt overwhelming. I believe learning is most effective when students feel supported, understood, and encouraged. My tutoring style is patient, approachable, and individualized. I take the time to understand how each student thinks, and I enjoy breaking down complex ideas into clear, manageable steps and helping students develop problem-solving strategies they can use on their own. Whether we're preparing for an exam, reinforcing foundational concepts, or building better study habits, my goal is to help students feel capable and confident.

I recently graduated from Cornell University in May 2014. I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with a concentration in Business. Math and Science have always fascinated me because of their applications to the technology we use in everyday life. As a tutor, these are my favorite subjects to work with because they involve definite answers that are firmly rooted in logic. My mission in helping students with these subjects is to show them how to break down complex problems into simple steps. This methodology will enable them to not only succeed in courses and on standardized tests, but also to develop an analytical mindset that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Outside of my academic life, I enjoy weight lifting, soccer, playing guitar, and reading fiction.

I'm here to assist with any current or aspiring college students with making the grades for, getting into, and thriving at college. My tutoring experience has spanned a wide variety of students over several years: from serving as a teaching aide for high school students with special needs, to working as a teaching assistant for elementary, middle, and high school students at a gifted academic summer camp, to working as a full-time in-school tutoring fellow at an urban middle school. This is in addition to more than a decade of informal experience assisting friends and family academically as I've balanced pursuing an Ivy League undergraduate degree.Writing has been a lifelong strength of mine, and I've enjoyed taking on positions where I've helped others improve their writing. The most prominent example of this would be serving a year as a staff editor, then two more years as Editor in Chief of a widely distributed campus magazine in college. I've also assisted students with resume, college admissions, and academic essay writing.Math, mainly Algebra (but spanning up to statistics and calculus II) has also always been a strong subject for me, and the majority of my professional tutoring experience comes from a full year, full-time fellowship teaching pre-algebra and algebra I.My interest in assisting with college admissions stems from: 1) getting into an Ivy League school, 2) qualifying for scholarships (including full-ride) to universities through National Merit & National Achievement PSAT Scholarships, 3) serving as a summer teaching assistant in a College Admissions course for gifted high school students, and 4) volunteering by introducing low-income students to the college application process. My schedule currently allows me to be flexible in terms of times and locations for tutoring sessions, both in-person and online. I recently retired from teaching science after 16 years in the classroom including high school and middle school. I miss my interactions with students and find that tutoring is very rewarding. My favorite moment is when I see the "light bulb" showing that a student understands what they need. I believe that understanding why a solution works is much more important than simply memorizing. Earning my master's degree in education and becoming a teacher was my mid-life crisis. Before that, I worked in industry as a chemical engineer and then a project manager for many years after earning my Bachelor of Science at Cornell University. While I tutor a range of subjects, my favorites are chemistry and physics because I think that they are the most interesting! However, I also help students with math and algebra because a solid foundation in these is critical for success in science.

As an educator, an individual is required to fill various different roles in order to provide students with the most effective education possible. After reflecting upon my own formative educational experiences and the teachers that left a profound impact on my thought processes and belief in myself, I realized that educating extends beyond creating an engaging lesson plan, but also includes helping students learn more about themselves in order to shape them into leaders, life-long scholars and students, as well as servicemen and women who are passionate about giving back to their respective communities. Each student has his or her own unique learning style that is determined by his or her own personal experience and backgrounds. Because of this, it is important for an educator to not only provide rudimentary knowledge enclosed in textbooks, but to also fuel them with the inspiration they need to go out and learn more about the issues facing their communities in order to use their experiential learnings to help lift others out of their experiences. For much of my early life, I grew up feeling that I had many learning disabilities and that I could not learn and think like the other kids and was dumber because of it. However, from experience, I have realized that just because you think differently, that it doesn't mean that you think "worse" than everyone else. Learning this invaluable lesson through my own experiences makes me jump at the prospect to work with other students who have gone through similar challenges to help them unleash the power they have in discovering the strength nestled within knowledge. While I am an aspiring physician, I believe that there are many parallels between the two fields of medicine and education that would enable me to provide a unique and meaningful perspective to the classroom. Medicine demands effective education through teaching patients and their families about specific treatments, the manifestation of certain diseases, and the mechanisms of infection within specific physiological pathways. I truly began to appreciate this after interacting with my own pediatrician, who had built her own clinic from the ground-up using her knowledge, the power of education, and the strength of connection. Concerned parents entered the visiting room with coughing and crying parents and emerged with their worries assuaged and feeling more empowered knowing how to take care of their child. This considered, it is vital for every physician to become properly trained to handle these responsibilities: to be effective communicators and leaders, to dissect complex concepts into manageable chunks, and to serve as beacons of support to those seeking his or her support. This is why I want to become an educator before I embark on my medical school journey because I know that, without valuing this integral yet often disregarded facet of medicine, I will not be able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Diagnosis demands more than medicine - it requires care, attention and compassion. These skills, although may be taught in tandem with classroom lectures, can be more fully appreciated through connection and service. This is why I hope to become a Varsity Tutor in the near future: to help build connections with students through service and education as well as foster a passion for learning and academic leadership both in and out of the classroom.

I am a student at Cornell University pursuing a degree in Computer Science. My passion for tutoring stems from a desire to empower students with the tools they need to approach challenging material with confidence and curiosity. I know firsthand how powerful it is to have someone break down complex topics into manageable steps, and I aim to provide that same clarity and support for others. I've worked with students in both academic and outreach settings. I have mentored high schoolers in robotics and programming, helped peers grasp fundamental concepts in math and science, and served as a debate coach, where I guided students in building arguments, analyzing policy, and developing strong communication skills. I enjoy building a connection with students and tailoring my explanations to how they learn best, whether that means using visual aids, real-world examples, or interactive problem-solving. I tutor subjects in math, science, and computer programming. My favorite areas to teach are computer science and physics because they allow students to see immediate cause and effect, sparking creativity and deeper understanding. I believe in a tutoring style that is encouraging, collaborative, and grounded in patience. Every student can learn; it is just a matter of finding the right path together. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy building electronics projects, exploring new technologies, and learning how policy and ethics intersect with engineering. Whether it is guiding students through a tough homework set or helping them discover a new academic passion, I am committed to making the learning process both effective and enjoyable.

Scientific curiosity is necessary to inspire the next generation of young scientists. I did not begin to see the possibilities of scientific curiosity until I was 13, and only through a short summer camp. I did not feel very engaged in my science classes until sophomore year of high school, when I found a love for chemistry. Without the encouragement of my scientifically inclined family, I might have lost interest in science long before that chemistry class. As a woman, I hope young girls will be inspired to follow a path similar to mine. While women are 50% of the population, they are significantly underrepresented in STEM fields. I believe that there are many more women out there who might have followed a similar path to mine, had they been given the encouragement and inspiration that I had.Since high school, I have had the opportunity to work in several teaching environments including classroom work, one-on-one tutoring, and group work. In high school, I worked as a teaching assistant in my synagogue’s Hebrew school, where I worked with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. My senior year of high school, I tutored three home-schooled children in Hebrew, designing all lesson plans, activities, and tests. Between high school and college, I spent a year in Israel, as I knew engineering would make a semester abroad difficult. For three months of my time there, I volunteered in a grade school English class and after-school program for teenage kids in an underprivileged neighborhood. In the grade school, I sat in the class with the children, and helped them follow the lesson plan to enhance their learning experience. In the after-school program, I worked one-on-one with the students, assisting them with their math and English homework. In college, I had two major teaching experiences. My senior year, I worked as a workshop coordinator for freshman chemistry students. The purpose of the workshop was to give students an extra hour of work per week to enhance their understanding of the subject. I also came up with example problems and challenge problems to complement their homework and better prepare them for exams. My senior year I was a TA for a junior level chemical engineering course. The work was similar to the workshop I taught, with the added responsibility of grading. In graduate school, I worked one-on-one with several undergraduate students. I designed a presentation on data analysis to help them understand the best ways to present different types of data. In my 4 years at Penn State, I mentored and trained 7 undergraduate students to help them complete their senior theses and independent studies. For one year, I collaborated with a 4th grade teacher at a nearby elementary school to create and implement an active science curriculum. I designed experiments, activities, and thought exercises for the class to help them better understand scientific concepts of their curriculum.I completed my BS in Chemical Engineering at Cornell University and my PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State University. I am prepared to tutor students in Math, Science, and Engineering at nearly all levels. I especially enjoy Algebra, Calculus and Chemistry.

I believe that tutoring not only enables me to help students, but it also provides me the opportunity to enhance my students' passion for lifelong learning. I will begin my studies in medical school in August 2014.As a previous tutor and teaching assistant for various courses at Cornell, I witnessed firsthand the positive effects of collaboration on student exam performance and retention on course material. The best route to improvement is being able to objectively identify which academic areas to strengthen. It is always possible to improve and succeed academically with proper organization, goals, and a guide. I have tutored clients in subjects ranging from the MCAT, physiology, biology, physics, chemistry, SATs, ACTs, Regents, and many more subjects.I took the MCAT and received a score of 34, 12 in Physical Sciences, 11 in Verbal Reasoning, and 11 in Biological Sciences, which placed me in the 93rd percentile of all test takers. I understand the struggles of preparing for medical school and can impart my past experiences and strategies to create a personalized plan with you in order to significantly increase your score. As long as you're ready to study smart with my guidance, the sky is the limit. With prior experience to teaching introductory and upper level basic science courses, I firmly believe you will be adequately prepared for your science classes. At Cornell, I was a teaching assistant for Comparative Physiology, where we were trained in learning strategies and principles of pedagogy. We were assigned to groups of students who showed difficulty in mastering the content for the course. Through using guides study sheets, spaced learning and electronic resources, my students were able to do 1 standard deviation higher compared to the class. Afterwards, I became a Senior Teaching assistant to help other Teaching Assistants in their group sessions. My other tasks included peer tutoring in the Office of Undergraduate Biology in all of the biology, chemistry and physics courses.Through my experience, I have recognized the importance in placing comprehension over memorization on my own grades and the students I have tutored so far. I have been able to help students in various high school and university level science courses and standardized tests to achieve the results they desire. The first part of that journey is to determine what learning style the student is in order to fully maximize their learning potential. Along with proper review at timed intervals using various resources, my students and clients have been able to achieve long-term memory retention and improved problem solving skills. I will ensure you will receive a professional service you deserve just as I intend to serve my future patients with the highest quality of care. I also love dancing, weight lifting, and cooking.

I am a junior at Cornell University studying Biology and Society. I've been interested in science and medicine for as long as I can remember, and I aspire to become a physician one day. Growing up, I always appreciated the value of education and what it opened up for me. I constantly had questions and was always eager to learn more. I've tutored for several years, and my favorite subjects to teach are definitely biology and math. As a tutor, I hope to answer students' questions, help them appreciate their academic interests even more than they already do, and learn more about myself and others.

I have worked with many middle school and high school students to improve their writing so that they could succeed in high school and college. I have also counseled students on college admissions and edited hundreds of college application essays at the undergraduate and graduate levels (including for medical school). I have written books, professional articles, and podcast episodes over many years. For three years, my college admissions podcast (USACollegeChat) reached thousands of prospective college students and their parents. My specialties are improving grammar, punctuation, and capitalization; writing concise and engaging sentences; building perfect paragraphs; and putting together an essay that is meaningful and persuasive. I love to help others improve their writing and believe that there is no way to do that other than over-the-shoulder working together. Many of my students would tell you that they have never had a teacher/counselor who cared about them more than I did. I am most proud of that!

I am a student at Cornell University studying Chemical Engineering and Computer Science. I'm living in Tarrytown right now and can help your son or daughter in math, science, or SAT/ACT prep! Over the past 5 years, I've accumulated many hours of tutoring experience. Some of the subjects I tutor include:-HS / AP Chemistry-HS / AP Physics-All Math Levels (Algebra, Trig, Precalc, Calculus, etc)- SATII Math (Both levels)-SAT / ACT Math- ACT ScienceOne of my core teaching methods is getting the student to thoughtfully approach questions and logically approach problems. I believe strongly that a student should be guided through problems rather than simply told whether they are right or wrong (that's what an answer key is for!). A tutor should provide feedback on their thought processes as well as follow through all possible choices when given options such as multiple choice. This way, students can learn to identify the right answer. My age gives me an advantage in that I have been in the shoes of all of my students not too many years ago. Not only do I currently use the information/skills that I help students acquire, but I believe I can act as a role model to encourage students that working hard pays off, and it is in fact cool to succeed in math and science. There is a huge reward for diligence, hard work, and success, and I try to instill these in every person I assist. My coursework has included Differential Equations, Multivariable Calculus, Discrete Math, etc. as well as lots of Physics courses (Heat and Mass Transfer, Mechanics, E&M, Fluid Mechanics), so you can be sure Physics and Math are my thing. Please consider me in helping you or your child, and I will do just that, to the best of my abilities.

I am currently a 4th year medical student with plans to pursue Ob/Gyn after graduation in 2022! For me, tutoring is one of the most rewarding opportunities! I love connecting with students and empowering them to get to where they want to be academically. My students have ranged in age from as young as 6 years old to college-aged. I've been tutoring individually for over 8 years now, and I specialize in helping students with chemistry, biology, math, and test-prep.

I graduated Cornell University in 2015 with a B.S. in Human Biology, Health, and Society. After graduating, I worked as a research technician at Columbia University Medical Center before going to India for a 4-week global health educational program. Currently, I am preparing to apply to medical school.I have acquired considerable teaching and mentoring experience in the past seven years. In high school, I tutored elementary and middle school students in math and general homework help. As a general chemistry tutor at Cornell University, I guided students through problem sets and exam preparation. To effectively do so, I integrated the knowledge and skills that I had gained through my own experience as a student in general chemistry as well as in other disciplines. While a teaching assistant for a nutrition laboratory course, I worked with the instructors to promote an appreciation for positive nutritional practices. Furthermore, six days a week for almost two years, I helped two local children achieve psychological and reading skills by utilizing psychoeducational books as a tool. Finally, I mentored two internationally-adopted youths in Japanese language and culture. Through these experiences, I have developed interpersonal and professional skills necessary to be an effective, reliable, and fun tutor.
