I love learning and look forward to helping students feel more confident, prepared, and successful in school. I recently moved back to the Pittsburgh area to begin a private sector career after seven years as a diplomat, working overseas and in Washington DC. I am working as a tutor to share my passion for writing, languages (English and French), history, government, and politics with students. I enhance tutoring sessions with real-world examples and scenarios to make history, politics, social studies, and language arts come alive off the textbook page.

I am currently an undergraduate student at Cornell University. I intend to major in physics and either minor or double major in computer science. In the past, I have tutored middle school and high school students, mostly in mathematics, but I also helped with middle school science and English as well as ACT preparation. I look forward to tutoring students in computer science, especially object-oriented programming; mathematics, from middle school mathematics to multivariable calculus and differential equations; preparation for the ACT, SAT, and AP tests; and topics in literature and history. My favorite subject to tutor is probably calculus because calculus really opens students' options for further exploration in math, science, economics, and pretty much every other STEM field. When it comes to tutoring, I believe that in order to give useful feedback to a student I need to observe and listen to them just as much they need to listen to me. Only then can I see what they need help understanding and how best to approach explaining it to them by building on their strengths. I think it's important to allow students time to think about problems and try to approach them on their own before giving them guidance so that they can develop confidence in their own ability to approach similar challenges independently.I have many hobbies outside of my academic pursuits. I enjoy reading a variety of genres especially science fiction, fantasy, weird fiction, and all sorts of non-fiction. I sometimes try my hand at writing short stories or poetry. I also frequently play musical instruments and listen to music. I play the guitar, mandolin, and trumpet and sometimes the keyboards or bass guitar. My favorite genres to listen to are jazz, progressive rock, folk, classic rock, and classical music. Some of my favorite bands and composers are King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Sun Ra, Miles Davis, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, and many others.
I am a graduate of Cornell University with a BS in Biological Sciences, where I started tutoring students one-on-one in calculus. Since then, I have also served multiple times as a teaching assistant, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Currently as a MS student at the University of Illinois, I tutor online, mainly for high school and college students in math and science. Understanding beats memorization every time! Understand the "why" and "how" of the topic; don't just memorizing facts. This is especially important for FRQs, word problems, and more advanced topics that require analysis of the material, beyond simple regurgitation of lectures. No question is too small to make sure that the foundational and basic knowledge is solid. I always have fun tutoring. I love the topics I teach, and I'm sure you will too!
I'm a Cornell University alumnus with a BA in Philosophy and Mathematics. My minor was Linguistics. Currently, I'm finishing an MSc in Logic from the University of Amsterdam. I tutor math, chemistry, logic, philosophy, English, Latin, and ACT prep. During my senior year, I was an undergraduate course assistant for Calculus I at Cornell, grading homework and conducting weekly homework study groups. I also taught courses on the philosophy of physics, mnemonics, and category theory to middle school students for a program called Splash. While living in Amsterdam, I was the TA for an introductory cognitive science course that included propositional logic and formal language theory. I took pride in giving highly detailed responses to students' questions, providing concrete examples and analogies to more familiar topics. My teaching philosophy is one of kindness, optimism, and patience. Also, I like to make my lessons as entertaining as possible, which is not difficult because I can be a goof even when it's not intentional. I can break complex topics down to their atoms. I never skip steps or assume that something is understood without confirmation. I try to see everything from your perspective. Most importantly, I work hard. I will go the extra mile to help you. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy writing stories and music. I spend about 2 hours every day exercising, and I love being outdoors!
As a passionate and dedicated tutor, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Biology at Cornell University with minors in both Spanish and Psychology. With experience teaching both high school and middle school students as a teaching assistant, I have developed a student-centered approach that emphasizes patience and adaptability. My tutoring experience includes volunteering with Spanish-speaking immigrants to help them learn English, which has given me a unique perspective on language acquisition. I also have experience as a teaching assistant for an introductory biology class. I aim to create engaging and organized lesson plans tailored to individual student needs, fostering their confidence and love for learning. Additionally, my background in science and language, combined with my experience as a teaching assistant, equips me to inspire students in subjects like Conversational Spanish and Reading Comprehension. I believe that connecting with students and sharing my passion for learning is the key to their academic success.
My name is Kate and I currently teach high school mathematics in Providence. I graduated from Cornell University in 2010 with a BA in Psychology. I dove into teaching right after college and taught 6th grade math. After a few years of teaching, I served as an Urban Education Fellow at Brown University. I love teaching math and working with students of all ages. I really love algebra concepts in particular! In my free time, I like to play soccer and surf at Narragansett Town Beach!
Hi y'all! I'm a senior at Cornell University with a strong background in biology, math, SAT, writing, and study skills. I love helping students break down confusing material into clear, manageable steps. My tutoring style is patient, encouraging, and structured, with a focus on building confidence as well as understanding. I also love to find creative ways to learn something new! Whether you need exam prep, homework support, or help staying organized, I'll meet you where you are and help you improve.
I graduated from cum laude Cornell University with a major in Biological Sciences and Nutritional Sciences and a minor in Cognitive Sciences. Currently, I am completing graduate school at University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ) Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences for an MS degree. I will be starting medical school in 2013, as part of UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School Class of 2017!Having an extensive academic background in biological sciences, I believe I can be your best tutor in subjects such as anatomy, biology and microbiology. Having taken the MCAT, I can help you obtain your best score possible! I have gone through many MCAT materials and would love to share what have worked for me, what hasn't, the pros and the cons and help you figure out techniques and methods to effectively study. Through many years of studying and much much more studying for medical school, I have acquired various study skills that I would love to share with you.I have also tutored SAT in all 3 subjects (Verbal, Writing and Math) for 4 years both one on one and in a small classroom setting. During this time, I also tutored elementary and middle school students in various subjects. I also work extremely well with children as I was head assistant at an aftercare program, helping out with homework, various activities and serving as a mentor for grades 1 to 6. I also have experience working with children with disabilities as I have volunteered as a buddy for numerous programs for children with disabilities since I was in high school. Here, I have developed patience and have learned how to give specialized attention.I am excited to not only be an excellent tutor but a positive mentor and role model. I like to engage the student and make sure that the student actually understands the material because this is how information stays with us. I believe that hard work pays off. You don't have to be the most gifted or smartest student in the room, but if you put in the time and effort, you can reach your fullest potential. I want to make studying as fun as it can possibly be (and it is fun when you are actually understanding what you're learning!) "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit."AristotleDuring my free time, I love to bake and cook. But if you're going to eat as many sweets as me, you better work it off! Luckily, I love a good work out and dancing as well. I've done hiphop since high school and throughout college. Recently, I have picked up latin dancing and am currently learning styles such as merengue, bachata, Argentinean tango and salsa to name a few. As a nutrition major, I also enjoy staying healthy, doing yoga and zumba which I am now obsessed with! Other times, I like doing arts and crafts from DIY projects to painting.
My academic background is in Math and Computer Science. I hold a bachelors of Mathematics from University of Florida and a Masters of Computer Science from Cornell University and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science. Outside of tutoring, my full time career is in software development.I'm comfortable tutoring high school and college level math and computer science as well as SAT and GRE prep. And my style of tutoring focuses on not just rote memorization of concepts but learning how and when to apply the right tool for the job. I've always loved creative problem solving and like to help my students learn to enjoy even tough topics like Trigonometry or Calculus as puzzles that require a lot of creative thinking. I've had some great teachers and mentors through the years who have shaped how I think, and I always enjoy the opportunity to pay that forward.Outside of my professional career, I'm a husband and father of four children. And I'm an avid life long learner.
As a Teacher knowledgeable of the needs of Students With Disabilities, my duty has been to ensure the success of all students under my charge. I've been very adamant about advocating for better placement, accommodation, and services for all students, as SPED pedagogy is not only beneficial to SPED students, but general students as a whole. I have been mindful of the 60/40 Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) compliance compositions, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) setting compliance, and above all, delivery of services by a SPED instructor.
As an educator, an individual is required to fill various different roles in order to provide students with the most effective education possible. After reflecting upon my own formative educational experiences and the teachers that left a profound impact on my thought processes and belief in myself, I realized that educating extends beyond creating an engaging lesson plan, but also includes helping students learn more about themselves in order to shape them into leaders, life-long scholars and students, as well as servicemen and women who are passionate about giving back to their respective communities. Each student has his or her own unique learning style that is determined by his or her own personal experience and backgrounds. Because of this, it is important for an educator to not only provide rudimentary knowledge enclosed in textbooks, but to also fuel them with the inspiration they need to go out and learn more about the issues facing their communities in order to use their experiential learnings to help lift others out of their experiences. For much of my early life, I grew up feeling that I had many learning disabilities and that I could not learn and think like the other kids and was dumber because of it. However, from experience, I have realized that just because you think differently, that it doesn't mean that you think "worse" than everyone else. Learning this invaluable lesson through my own experiences makes me jump at the prospect to work with other students who have gone through similar challenges to help them unleash the power they have in discovering the strength nestled within knowledge. While I am an aspiring physician, I believe that there are many parallels between the two fields of medicine and education that would enable me to provide a unique and meaningful perspective to the classroom. Medicine demands effective education through teaching patients and their families about specific treatments, the manifestation of certain diseases, and the mechanisms of infection within specific physiological pathways. I truly began to appreciate this after interacting with my own pediatrician, who had built her own clinic from the ground-up using her knowledge, the power of education, and the strength of connection. Concerned parents entered the visiting room with coughing and crying parents and emerged with their worries assuaged and feeling more empowered knowing how to take care of their child. This considered, it is vital for every physician to become properly trained to handle these responsibilities: to be effective communicators and leaders, to dissect complex concepts into manageable chunks, and to serve as beacons of support to those seeking his or her support. This is why I want to become an educator before I embark on my medical school journey because I know that, without valuing this integral yet often disregarded facet of medicine, I will not be able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Diagnosis demands more than medicine - it requires care, attention and compassion. These skills, although may be taught in tandem with classroom lectures, can be more fully appreciated through connection and service. This is why I hope to become a Varsity Tutor in the near future: to help build connections with students through service and education as well as foster a passion for learning and academic leadership both in and out of the classroom.
Hello there! I would love to work with your student! I was the valedictorian of my high school, earning my diploma with a 4.6328 GPA (the highest in the history of my school), and I recently graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor's in Neurobiology and Behavior as I pursue God's calling for me to become a neurosurgeon. I was the captain of the Peer Tutoring Lab at my high school from 10th to 12th grade, so I have experience tutoring students from elementary to high school level. Because I understand the importance of fully grasping material and believe that students all approach content differently, I am a patient teacher willing to explain the same concept in different ways multiple times. I strive to create a warm, caring learning experience in my sessions because every student deserves a positive academic support system. I earned a score of 5 on both AP English Exams, a 1530 on the SAT, and won the National Merit Scholarship Competition in 2022. I'd love to work with you!
Math is a language; it is creative, intuitive and serves a purpose. As a tutor I will help you master it with the fewest formulas to memorize and the most conceptual understanding, so that you will not forget everything a year later or blank out during an exam. This is the learning approach I used as an engineer in Italy, as an MBA student at CUNY, and in my PhD coursework at Cornell University. Also, it is the same approach I successfully shared as a teacher with math students of the Bronx Community College and Operations Management students of Baruch College and the Cornell Graduate School. Whether statistics, management or psychology majors, or new freshmen, they usually are able to grasp the "grammar rules" of a linear algebra problem before I proceed to formally state the theorem to be applied. While I continue today with my research work on probability models and my full-time college teaching, I enjoy guiding high school or older students, and middle school students beyond their grade level, through most mathematical subjects, statistics, management, and test prep. Now a long time New Yorker, I also enjoy the city by bike and the occasional getaway by hike, kayak, or cross country skis. I enjoy traveling, healthy cooking, and sharing the culture and language of my home country, Italy, with students and friends from all over the world.
Cornell University Economics major with strong math skills through high school calculus. I focus on breaking down complex problems into clear, manageable steps while building confidence and independence. My experience supporting first-generation and low-income students has shaped my patient, encouraging teaching style. I am passionate about leveling the playing field and making math accessible and empowering for every student.
I am a Cornell University student, and plan to major in Computer Science. Technology is my main passion. I've developed apps and websites, and have taught a programming class to elementary school students, and I plan to tutor computer science and programming.Besides tech, I also like reading, and have a particular knack for the English and Reading portions of the ACT and SAT. My philosophy for test taking success is to know the base material required to answer the questions, know the tactics to optimize approaches to questions, and to do practice problems and rigorously review mistakes. I aim to tutor students in the ACT and SAT using this philosophy, helping them approach it efficiently.Outside of these areas, I also enjoy playing soccer, playing tennis, and traveling.
Hi!My name is Liz and I want to work with you!I enjoy teaching and mentoring. I have worked with undergraduate and high school students extensively over the last several years. I believe learning occurs not when a student first hears the information but when they start using the information. Learning takes reflection and practice enhanced through multi-faceted approaches. My role as a tutor is to provide insight and direction to the learning process. After all, not only have I learned the material once but I have also observed multiple people learn the same material. In addition, through my research experience I have implemented the classroom lessons into real life problems.I enjoy incorporating my research into my teaching/tutoring. I can draw from experiences of commonly misunderstood concepts that cannot be gained from a textbook or other interactive learning modules. Not to say there isn't value in those activities because it allows students to learn/review in their dominant learning style. My role as a tutor is to provide the most useful resources and help students build the right tools to eventually master the subject.I am currently a postdoctoral research fellow at UNC Chapel Hill in the School of Pharmacy. I am developing non viral gene therapy systems for treatment of solid tumors. Before this, I earned my PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. There in addition to research I gained an appreciation of nature. I lived near a waterfall and I have hiked several mountains in the Adirondacks! In undergrad, I studied physics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. I fell in love with the city and physics and math during my 4 years there. I graduated high school from the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science which is a residential public high school in Mississippi and frequently ranked within the top 500 best high schools in the nation.
I am a graduate of Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with Distinction in 2015. Since graduation, I was a physics/chemistry teacher and soccer coach at a private school in Virginia for a year, where I led the soccer team to an undefeated season. Before teaching and coaching professionally, I was a Teaching Assistant for the Cornell Math and Physics Departments, where I taught many subjects including calculus, mechanics, electromagnetism. Throughout my time at Cornell and as a teacher, I tutored subjects ranging from the SAT to AP Physics and Algebra II, which is where my true talents lie: in small group or one-on-one settings where I can give students the full attention they deserve and tailor my approach specifically to their learning styles. This is why I am now pursuing tutoring as a part-time occupation at Varsity Tutors. I embrace teaching all math and science subjects, especially physics and calculus, at both the college and high school level and will go above and beyond to make sure all of my students succeed, according to their definition of success. In my spare time, I enjoy playing league soccer, basketball, tennis and guitar, and also like to travel and see as much of the world as I can.
I am a diligent student, currently attending Cornell University for meteorology. I am committed to excellence in everything I do. I am extremely passionate about music. I graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology, Health, and Society. I received a minor in Global Health. While at Cornell, I was a teaching assistant and also spent time tutoring young men for their GED exams and fellow students in Biology and Chemistry. I currently tutor various subjects, but feel most strongly about Biology. I also find that I enjoy tutoring for MCAT preparation, as I understand how difficult the process can be, and wish to help others in the way that my own MCAT tutor helped me.
Hello! I am a recent chemistry graduate from Cornell University. I have always loved teaching and believe that one-on-one guidance can be a strong aid not just for school, but really for any life activity. I have experience tutoring elementary, middle, and high school students but am willing to teach at any level. My specialties lie in the sciences and with my strong research background I am not a stranger to navigating and explaining what seems like daunting concepts.Going beyond the technical details of each subject, I believe that strong foundational study skills can assist the student in all their subjects. While I am sure my methods arent perfect, I hope to narrow down on the perfect study and tutoring styles to match each student.
I am a student at Cornell University, expecting to receive my Bachelor of Science in December 2020. I am studying biological sciences with a minor in applied economics, and plan to enter a career in medicine. However, I have a love for learning in all subjects. I have extensive experience as a math tutor both in high school and college, and am eager to help more students in math and science. I am a graduate of Cornell University (B.A.) and the University of Miami (M.S.Ed.). I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a minor in Women's Studies. I also earned my masters in education where I did research on literacy and writing strategies for students in grades 6-12. For the past 6 years I've been teaching ELA for 9th and 10th graders in Miami, FL. I've also tutored students who were struggling to prepare for Standardized Tests in the areas of Critical Reading and Writing exams. I firmly believe that any student can learn the literacy skills necessary to navigate the world.
I have spent my life teaching math, both as a classroom teacher and as a tutor, and I love it! My goal is always to make mathematics simple and understandable. I teach by asking questions, both to check for understanding and to allow the student to figure out the concept on his/her own. While my favorite topics are Statistics and Trigonometry, I love teaching all of Algebra too. I have taught both AP Statistics as well as IB SL. Nothing compares to seeing the look of understanding a math concept on a student's face! In addition, I have taught courses in, and tutored, SAT Prep for 35 years. While I do tutor both the math and Reading & Writing sections, I do believe that students can be helped more in the math section. Therefore, I choose to work with students who want to improve their math score more, but may still want some help with the Reading and Writing. Yes, the SAT has changed throughout the years but I have kept up with it and have seen more than 100 SAT tests. I am an expert in SAT test construction and offer many problem-solving strategies for success on the SAT test.
I am a graduate of Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, with a degree in Neurobiology and Behavior. I believe that tutoring not only enables me to help students, but it also provides me the opportunity to enhance my students' passion for lifelong learning. I will begin my studies in medical school in August 2014.As a previous tutor and teaching assistant for various courses at Cornell, I witnessed firsthand the positive effects of collaboration on student exam performance and retention on course material. The best route to improvement is being able to objectively identify which academic areas to strengthen. It is always possible to improve and succeed academically with proper organization, goals, and a guide. I have tutored clients in subjects ranging from the MCAT, physiology, biology, physics, chemistry, SATs, ACTs, Regents, and many more subjects.I took the MCAT and received a score of 34, 12 in Physical Sciences, 11 in Verbal Reasoning, and 11 in Biological Sciences, which placed me in the 93rd percentile of all test takers. I understand the struggles of preparing for medical school and can impart my past experiences and strategies to create a personalized plan with you in order to significantly increase your score. As long as you're ready to study smart with my guidance, the sky is the limit. With prior experience to teaching introductory and upper level basic science courses, I firmly believe you will be adequately prepared for your science classes. At Cornell, I was a teaching assistant for Comparative Physiology, where we were trained in learning strategies and principles of pedagogy. We were assigned to groups of students who showed difficulty in mastering the content for the course. Through using guides study sheets, spaced learning and electronic resources, my students were able to do 1 standard deviation higher compared to the class. Afterwards, I became a Senior Teaching assistant to help other Teaching Assistants in their group sessions. My other tasks included peer tutoring in the Office of Undergraduate Biology in all of the biology, chemistry and physics courses.Through my experience, I have recognized the importance in placing comprehension over memorization on my own grades and the students I have tutored so far. I have been able to help students in various high school and university level science courses and standardized tests to achieve the results they desire. The first part of that journey is to determine what learning style the student is in order to fully maximize their learning potential. Along with proper review at timed intervals using various resources, my students and clients have been able to achieve long-term memory retention and improved problem solving skills. I will ensure you will receive a professional service you deserve just as I intend to serve my future patients with the highest quality of care. As your mentor, I will work with you to fully comprehend the material and excel in your endeavors towards a better future.

Hello! My name is Aleks and I am a MSEd student at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. I am originally from the Northwest side of Chicago, and grew up attending public schools and Polish Catholic school on the weekends. I graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and a Minor in European Studies and am very interested in international relations, research, and education policy. Most of my experience stems from mentorship and teaching roles in formal and informal learning spaces, providing college access, reading, math, and writing support to students K-12 as well as adult learners. As a student teacher, I am constantly exploring new teaching strategies and have particularly found a lot of joy working with bilingual and multilingual learners! My background as a native Polish speaker and first generation student has informed my path to supporting learners in building confidence in their rich linguistic repertoires.
I was a straight A student in high school, graduate Cum Laude from Stony Brook University, and went on to attend Cornell University for my MBA. Currently I'm a start-up consultant. I've always enjoyed teaching, however, that's why I like tutoring. I've a teaching assistant many times over, both in undergrad and grad school. I've also been a private tutor since high school. My goal is help you achieve, if not exceed your own. I believe in using a student's background and interests to help them understand concepts they may not grasp upon first review. I'm always available as a resource online when there in person. I really do enjoy tutoring, and I can't wait to be yours.
I am a second year law student at the University of Chicago who hails from the San Francisco Bay Area! I tutor the SAT, ESL, and Spanish. I was an AVID tutor in high school, and after college I taught an ESL class and tutored a high school student in Spanish. In law school, I am involved with the Lawyers in the Classroom program. My tutoring philosophy is based on listening to students work through problems and helping them to spot their confusions or incorrect assumptions. I believe students learn much better when they aren't simply told the right answer or right reasoning; they need to get there on their own.Outside of academia, I love to sing. I'm classically trained, but I also participated in a cappella in college! I also ran my first marathon this year, and I love to cook and try new recipes.
I have tutored and/or taught mathematics to elementary, middle, and high school students over 20 years. I enjoy teaching high school mathematics the most, i.e. Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. I love exploring and learning about the world through various perspectives and disciplines. I also have a life-long interest in the arts, particularly music and literature. Coming from a diverse background of education and environmental exposure, I understand the challenges of processing new information and approaches to intake and digest them. My emphasis in teaching lies in listening to my students and self-directed application. I am excited to discover how materials in science can help students to understand the world and themselves.
I am a great tutor because I am excited to share knowledge, yet patient and understanding of different students. As a college student, I was a peer counselor, in which I empathetically and nonjudgmentally provided emotional support to others who were struggling with an issue. With these skills, I am comfortable with leading a student through academic material while minimizing frustration and confusion. Furthermore, my undergraduate training in human development allows me to confidently work with others whom are different ages and cultures. These skills help me communicate with a diverse population and serve as positive support through academic challenges.

I'm a graduate of Cornell University, where I earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry & Chemical Biology with a focus on food science. After graduation I decided to take a gap year before applying for a graduate degree program and worked for six months at a winery internship in California. Over my high school and college years I tutored high school students in a variety of math and science topics, my favorites being Geometry and Chemistry. In my experience working with students who are struggling in math and science, I aim to help them develop their problem solving toolkit and build confidence in their academic intuitions. I also hope to pass on my passion for math and science to my students and make these often unpopular subjects more enjoyable. I'm a very visual learner and teacher, and I like to use charts, drawings, and physical models to help illustrate abstract concepts and make them more tangible and understandable. In this way, I've channeled my interest in chemistry into a love of food science, and in my free time I like cooking, reading, photography, and crafts.
I am a sophomore at Cornell University in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). I graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School as a Law & Society major, and have lived in Manhattan my entire life. I am also an athlete. I'm currently a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo. I also played baseball and soccer competitively in high school. My main tutoring focus is algebra, which I enjoy teaching because it builds the foundation for success in more advanced math courses. My primary teaching experience comes from working as a lead teacher at NORY, a STEM-based summer camp. In that role, I managed classroom environments for children ages 8-12 while delivering inquiry-driven STEM lessons. These included introducing core physics concepts and beginner coding with platforms like Scratch through hands-on maker projects. In addition, I've spent significant time tutoring my younger sister in high school and middle school math. I love tutoring because it's rewarding to see students gain confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment as they improve. My approach is to connect with students personally and create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where they feel comfortable learning.
