I have worked with many middle school and high school students to improve their writing so that they could succeed in high school and college. I have also counseled students on college admissions and edited hundreds of college application essays at the undergraduate and graduate levels (including for medical school). I have written books, professional articles, and podcast episodes over many years. For three years, my college admissions podcast (USACollegeChat) reached thousands of prospective college students and their parents. My specialties are improving grammar, punctuation, and capitalization; writing concise and engaging sentences; building perfect paragraphs; and putting together an essay that is meaningful and persuasive. I love to help others improve their writing and believe that there is no way to do that other than over-the-shoulder working together. Many of my students would tell you that they have never had a teacher/counselor who cared about them more than I did. I am most proud of that!

I recently retired from teaching science after 16 years in the classroom including high school and middle school. I miss my interactions with students and find that tutoring is very rewarding. My favorite moment is when I see the "light bulb" showing that a student understands what they need. I believe that understanding why a solution works is much more important than simply memorizing. Earning my master's degree in education and becoming a teacher was my mid-life crisis. Before that, I worked in industry as a chemical engineer and then a project manager for many years after earning my Bachelor of Science at Cornell University. While I tutor a range of subjects, my favorites are chemistry and physics because I think that they are the most interesting! However, I also help students with math and algebra because a solid foundation in these is critical for success in science.

Scientific curiosity is necessary to inspire the next generation of young scientists. I did not begin to see the possibilities of scientific curiosity until I was 13, and only through a short summer camp. I did not feel very engaged in my science classes until sophomore year of high school, when I found a love for chemistry. Without the encouragement of my scientifically inclined family, I might have lost interest in science long before that chemistry class. As a woman, I hope young girls will be inspired to follow a path similar to mine. While women are 50% of the population, they are significantly underrepresented in STEM fields. I believe that there are many more women out there who might have followed a similar path to mine, had they been given the encouragement and inspiration that I had.Since high school, I have had the opportunity to work in several teaching environments including classroom work, one-on-one tutoring, and group work. In high school, I worked as a teaching assistant in my synagogue’s Hebrew school, where I worked with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. My senior year of high school, I tutored three home-schooled children in Hebrew, designing all lesson plans, activities, and tests. Between high school and college, I spent a year in Israel, as I knew engineering would make a semester abroad difficult. For three months of my time there, I volunteered in a grade school English class and after-school program for teenage kids in an underprivileged neighborhood. In the grade school, I sat in the class with the children, and helped them follow the lesson plan to enhance their learning experience. In the after-school program, I worked one-on-one with the students, assisting them with their math and English homework. In college, I had two major teaching experiences. My senior year, I worked as a workshop coordinator for freshman chemistry students. The purpose of the workshop was to give students an extra hour of work per week to enhance their understanding of the subject. I also came up with example problems and challenge problems to complement their homework and better prepare them for exams. My senior year I was a TA for a junior level chemical engineering course. The work was similar to the workshop I taught, with the added responsibility of grading. In graduate school, I worked one-on-one with several undergraduate students. I designed a presentation on data analysis to help them understand the best ways to present different types of data. In my 4 years at Penn State, I mentored and trained 7 undergraduate students to help them complete their senior theses and independent studies. For one year, I collaborated with a 4th grade teacher at a nearby elementary school to create and implement an active science curriculum. I designed experiments, activities, and thought exercises for the class to help them better understand scientific concepts of their curriculum.I completed my BS in Chemical Engineering at Cornell University and my PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State University. I am prepared to tutor students in Math, Science, and Engineering at nearly all levels. I especially enjoy Algebra, Calculus and Chemistry.

As an educator, an individual is required to fill various different roles in order to provide students with the most effective education possible. After reflecting upon my own formative educational experiences and the teachers that left a profound impact on my thought processes and belief in myself, I realized that educating extends beyond creating an engaging lesson plan, but also includes helping students learn more about themselves in order to shape them into leaders, life-long scholars and students, as well as servicemen and women who are passionate about giving back to their respective communities. Each student has his or her own unique learning style that is determined by his or her own personal experience and backgrounds. Because of this, it is important for an educator to not only provide rudimentary knowledge enclosed in textbooks, but to also fuel them with the inspiration they need to go out and learn more about the issues facing their communities in order to use their experiential learnings to help lift others out of their experiences. For much of my early life, I grew up feeling that I had many learning disabilities and that I could not learn and think like the other kids and was dumber because of it. However, from experience, I have realized that just because you think differently, that it doesn't mean that you think "worse" than everyone else. Learning this invaluable lesson through my own experiences makes me jump at the prospect to work with other students who have gone through similar challenges to help them unleash the power they have in discovering the strength nestled within knowledge. While I am an aspiring physician, I believe that there are many parallels between the two fields of medicine and education that would enable me to provide a unique and meaningful perspective to the classroom. Medicine demands effective education through teaching patients and their families about specific treatments, the manifestation of certain diseases, and the mechanisms of infection within specific physiological pathways. I truly began to appreciate this after interacting with my own pediatrician, who had built her own clinic from the ground-up using her knowledge, the power of education, and the strength of connection. Concerned parents entered the visiting room with coughing and crying parents and emerged with their worries assuaged and feeling more empowered knowing how to take care of their child. This considered, it is vital for every physician to become properly trained to handle these responsibilities: to be effective communicators and leaders, to dissect complex concepts into manageable chunks, and to serve as beacons of support to those seeking his or her support. This is why I want to become an educator before I embark on my medical school journey because I know that, without valuing this integral yet often disregarded facet of medicine, I will not be able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Diagnosis demands more than medicine - it requires care, attention and compassion. These skills, although may be taught in tandem with classroom lectures, can be more fully appreciated through connection and service. This is why I hope to become a Varsity Tutor in the near future: to help build connections with students through service and education as well as foster a passion for learning and academic leadership both in and out of the classroom.

I have just graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and am very excited to begin my career as a professional. Explaining complex concepts and methods in mathematics and physics has always come naturally to me, and I've made great use of this skill as a tutor. While math and physics are my forte, I am also adept in tutoring english grammar, language, and literature. There are few things I enjoy more than a true challenge, whether it be physical or mental. I aspire to be a great inventor and hope that my ideas and creations may simplify life as we know it and bring health, comfort, and joy to the masses. My favorite book is "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett and I recommend that everyone read promptly.

I am Chemistry & Chemical Biology graduate of Cornell University, Magna Cum Laude, very experienced with chemistry and standardized test taking tutoring. Teaching and learning are passions of mine, and I really enjoy helping students exceed their expectations, improving intellectually and paving the way for their futures. My teaching style is a long-term approach to mastery. I believe it is critical to first master fundamentals before building on these concepts to solve more complex problems – the ones on your exam. The best approach for this is regularly scheduled sessions a period of time before an exam, so that come exam time students have had to the opportunity to understand the basics and tackle the most challenging questions that will show up on the exam. I emphasize a problem solving approach, and believe extracting and retaining all information from test questions and practice exams is critical to test performance. I encourage students to take exams under test conditions, and will guide students through challenging problems.Critical to my teaching philosophy is developing test-taking strategy – gaining an in-depth knowledge of questions that will be given on the test, and how to solve them most efficiently. For GRE Math, this involves first reviewing all subject material that could appear on the exam to make sure the basics are mastered, and then moving through exam problems of increasing complexity. For the GRE Verbal section, this involves learning the finite question types for this section, and using the clues each of these formats provides to solve problems. For those who have difficulty navigating longer passages, I encourage zoning in on key turning points, indicated by action words, which many exam questions come from. I also encourage reading Op-Ed articles daily to build reading skills. For those who have trouble with vocabulary questions, I also encourage zoning in on key turning points, learning the nuances of each vocabulary word, memorizing the lists of frequently appearing words on the GRE and learning new words from practice exams. For Chemistry, this involves reviewing practice exams and trying to gauge exam style once the basics have been fully mastered. My strongest tutoring subjects are General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, GRE Math and GRE Verbal. For three semesters at Cornell, I tutored Organic Chemistry with the Learning Strategies Center. Here, I guided students through problems sets and practice exams, with a particular focus on improving critical reasoning, time management and test-taking strategy skills generally applicable to all academics. I have tutored university level General Chemistry, AP, IB and high school math & chemistry privately. When I took the GRE in August 2014, I scored on the 94th Percentile for both the Quantitative (167) and Verbal Reasoning (164) components. These scores are in the range to attend the nation’s most selective graduate schools. At Cornell, I scored an “A” in all of my general chemistry and organic chemistry courses, including a graduate level organic synthesis course. My professional experiences are strongly researched oriented, and I have worked in 3 organic chemistry labs at Cornell, The Scripps Research Institute and Stockholm University. During my summer internship at Scripps, I was supervised by Phil Baran, winner of the 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Award.Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, Italian language and culture, basketball, hiking and reading. I have visited 23 different countries, lived for 9 months in Sweden, and some of my favorite works of literature are the essays of Massachusetts natives Emerson and Thoreau. The picture in my profile was taken on top of the Duomo in Milan, Italy.Teaching is one of my favorite activities, and I cherish the opportunities to help students succeed. I am happy to help with any and all General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, High School Math, GRE Math and GRE Verbal tutoring!

I am a sophomore at Cornell University in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). I graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School as a Law & Society major, and have lived in Manhattan my entire life. I am also an athlete. I'm currently a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo. I also played baseball and soccer competitively in high school. My main tutoring focus is algebra, which I enjoy teaching because it builds the foundation for success in more advanced math courses. My primary teaching experience comes from working as a lead teacher at NORY, a STEM-based summer camp. In that role, I managed classroom environments for children ages 8-12 while delivering inquiry-driven STEM lessons. These included introducing core physics concepts and beginner coding with platforms like Scratch through hands-on maker projects. In addition, I've spent significant time tutoring my younger sister in high school and middle school math. I love tutoring because it's rewarding to see students gain confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment as they improve. My approach is to connect with students personally and create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where they feel comfortable learning.

My teaching specialties include Biology, Psychology, the Life Sciences, Reading, Writing, and preparation for verbal and writing test sections. I studied Biology at Cornell University, graduating with Honors in 2009, and earned a Master's in Psychology from the University of Chicago in 2010. I currently tutor students ranging from elementary to high school in critical reading and analytical writing, both as part of SAT prep and in the context of English and Social Studies classwork. I have a long history of teaching, starting with tutoring students in the introductory biology lecture at Cornell after I earned an A+ in the class. My passion for science education led me to volunteer with Roots and Shoots, an environmental education organization, to teach hands-on workshops for young children at the local science center about topics such as flower anatomy, animal tracks, and the popular 'egg drop'. I was also a peer counselor and trained incoming counselors, which involved teaching in front of large groups and leading small-group exercises. For my Master's thesis research, I became a research assistant at the Lincoln Park Zoo, studying the behavior of chimpanzees and gorillas. I frequently interacted with zoo guests as I collected my data and enjoyed teaching them about ape behavior, care, and conservation. Most recently, I took on students in my hometown of West Windsor, NJ as I prepared my Master's thesis for publication in a scientific journal.Motivating the next generation to be enthusiastic scholars and engaged citizens is one of my primary goals. I am particularly adept at communicating complex ideas, and I am eager to share this skill with younger students. In college I took several writing-intensive classes in my biology major, and I further honed my writing skill in my undergraduate Honor's thesis and my Master's thesis, which has been published. I scored very highly in the verbal and writing sections on the SAT and GRE, and I am well-placed to help your student improve his or her score as well as better comprehend and communicate his or her own ideas.

I have a passion for learning and with that comes my passion for teaching. Helping someone understand a tricky concept or tackle a new piece of information is incredibly fulfilling. This passion is what drove me into the field of medicine, as doctors both constantly learn new material and teach it to their patients. So my goal is to be a lifelong learner and teacher. I am certainly learning a lot in school right now, and am achieving my goal of teaching through tutoring.I believe the key to teaching is in strong communication skills and creativity. I understand that every learner has a different style and different needs, so I try to use creativity to come up with fun new ways to learn material. In the past I have made interactive games, songs, and helped walk students through diagrams and graphs that help elucidate information. When teaching, I am patient, persistent, and thorough. I know from my own studying at school, that not all concepts come as easily as others, and that sometimes an idea may seem clear only to suddenly slip away. So I make sure to check in with whoever I am helping to make sure all concepts are understood on the deepest of levels.Overall, my passions for learning, teaching, and helping others make me a strong tutor. I enjoy working with every student and I look forward to working with you.

I am a recent graduate of Cornell University with a bachelors degree in both English and History and am currently pursuing my Masters degree in History at the University of Pennsylvania. My long-term goals include enrolling in a Phd program in the History department and becoming a form of history or social studies teacher post-graduation. I currently work with Varsity Tutoring as an online tutor and want to expand my tutoring opportunities. During my time at Cornell, I participated in a tutoring program for two years called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) which is an organization that aims to close the achievement gap between students and prepare them for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Many of the goals that were part of the program, such as teaching students skills and behaviors for academic success, providing intensive support to maintain positive student/teacher relationships and developing a sense of personal achievement through hard work.Part of AVID meant working with students from historically underrepresented communities. These students often had family problems or were the first person in their family hoping to attend college. I had to work with these students, through their personal problems and insecurities to develop a successful academic plan for success. As a tutor, I am extremely meticulous and keen on time management. I usually tutor in English or History for the regents, SAT subject tests, or Advanced Placement exams. My course of action involves three main steps:First, I identify the areas that the student needs the most help in. I prepare a simple and easy to read outline for them on the subject. I also make a few flash cards to get the student started, even if flashcards arent their preferred study method. This way, we have a starting point to work from. A tutor should put in just as much effort as their student is putting in. From my perspective, successful tutoring involves equal input and effort from both parties involved.Second, I identify the learning style of the student and ask them questions about what learning methods they prefer. This way, I can adjust the way I tutor in accordance to what works the best for the student. I want to be flexible as a teacher to be able to work with a particular students learning style, whether its hands on, visual, auditory, etc. When a student has a problem, I want to be able to work with other teachers to figure out the best way to give the student the support they need.Lastly, I create a tutor schedule with the student and show them exactly what we will review and how we will review it. This is to create a sense of organization for the student and myself. I want the student to provide feedback on tutoring methods because their input is crucial to the success of the tutoring. Communication between the tutor and student is key because if something is not working or the student is not understanding a particular topic, we need to work together to find a method that will work better for the student.Whether I tutor in large or small groups, I focus on the learning experience. I want my students to strength their imaginations, foster creativity, and put in the hard work that it takes to become independent as a student. I believe that giving these skills to students will allow them to become prepared for college and leave the world a better place than they found it. I hope that I can help facilitate the students in this rewarding process. I thank you for taking the opportunity to read my application and hope to hear back from you.

I am studying biological sciences with a minor in applied economics, and plan to enter a career in medicine. However, I have a love for learning in all subjects. I have extensive experience as a math tutor both in high school and college, and am eager to help more students in math and science. As a tutor, I hope to be able to make my students appreciate the value of what they are learning and enjoy solving problems independently.

I am a graduate of Cornell University, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Minor in Music. I hold a Masters of Arts in English from the University of Connecticut, where I am currently working on my PhD in American Literature. I tutor a mix of test preparation, English, Literature, and Writing. In helping students with reading and writing skills, I enjoy using multiple different approaches to develop a well-rounded understanding of the techniques, while making the sessions fun. I'm a strong proponent of keeping studying dynamic. It is important to me that my students come away from our sessions with not only the scores or grades they desire, but a deeper understanding of the topics and skills that will continue to benefit them beyond test day. In my spare time I love long runs, singing, hiking, and reading.

I graduated Cornell University in 2015 with a B.S. in Human Biology, Health, and Society. After graduating, I worked as a research technician at Columbia University Medical Center before going to India for a 4-week global health educational program. Currently, I am preparing to apply to medical school.I have acquired considerable teaching and mentoring experience in the past seven years. In high school, I tutored elementary and middle school students in math and general homework help. As a general chemistry tutor at Cornell University, I guided students through problem sets and exam preparation. To effectively do so, I integrated the knowledge and skills that I had gained through my own experience as a student in general chemistry as well as in other disciplines. While a teaching assistant for a nutrition laboratory course, I worked with the instructors to promote an appreciation for positive nutritional practices. Furthermore, six days a week for almost two years, I helped two local children achieve psychological and reading skills by utilizing psychoeducational books as a tool. Finally, I mentored two internationally-adopted youths in Japanese language and culture. Through these experiences, I have developed interpersonal and professional skills necessary to be an effective, reliable, and fun tutor.

I am a graduate of Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, with a degree in Neurobiology and Behavior. I believe that tutoring not only enables me to help students, but it also provides me the opportunity to enhance my students' passion for lifelong learning. I will begin my studies in medical school in August 2014.As a previous tutor and teaching assistant for various courses at Cornell, I witnessed firsthand the positive effects of collaboration on student exam performance and retention on course material. The best route to improvement is being able to objectively identify which academic areas to strengthen. It is always possible to improve and succeed academically with proper organization, goals, and a guide. I have tutored clients in subjects ranging from the MCAT, physiology, biology, physics, chemistry, SATs, ACTs, Regents, and many more subjects.I took the MCAT and received a score of 34, 12 in Physical Sciences, 11 in Verbal Reasoning, and 11 in Biological Sciences, which placed me in the 93rd percentile of all test takers. I understand the struggles of preparing for medical school and can impart my past experiences and strategies to create a personalized plan with you in order to significantly increase your score. As long as you're ready to study smart with my guidance, the sky is the limit. With prior experience to teaching introductory and upper level basic science courses, I firmly believe you will be adequately prepared for your science classes. At Cornell, I was a teaching assistant for Comparative Physiology, where we were trained in learning strategies and principles of pedagogy. We were assigned to groups of students who showed difficulty in mastering the content for the course. Through using guides study sheets, spaced learning and electronic resources, my students were able to do 1 standard deviation higher compared to the class. Afterwards, I became a Senior Teaching assistant to help other Teaching Assistants in their group sessions. My other tasks included peer tutoring in the Office of Undergraduate Biology in all of the biology, chemistry and physics courses.Through my experience, I have recognized the importance in placing comprehension over memorization on my own grades and the students I have tutored so far. I have been able to help students in various high school and university level science courses and standardized tests to achieve the results they desire. The first part of that journey is to determine what learning style the student is in order to fully maximize their learning potential. Along with proper review at timed intervals using various resources, my students and clients have been able to achieve long-term memory retention and improved problem solving skills. I will ensure you will receive a professional service you deserve just as I intend to serve my future patients with the highest quality of care. As your mentor, I will work with you to fully comprehend the material and excel in your endeavors towards a better future.

I have tutored extensively throughout high school. I was a private tutor to students ages 7-14 in math, reading, writing, and science. I helped found a mentorship organization that tutored elementary-aged children in reading, writing, and math in preparation for the New York State exams. I'm a recent Cornell graduate who is passion about personalized education. I studied English and Film, with a lot of everything else thrown in!As someone who's been stuck in classes that didn't do anything for me, I value the fact that everyone learns differently, and that variety and context, though integral to an engaged learning experience, are often lacking in traditional classrooms. I have remote teaching experience, so I'm looking forward to tutoring a wide variety of students online!
