Francois has also been involved at City Tech as a Peer Leader, beginning in the Fall 2014 semester. Through this Peer-Led Team Learning program, he has facilitated students learning in Remedial Math, Algebra and Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I and II. He learned through this experience how to explain concepts in many different ways so that students with diverse learning styles and experiences are able to master the topic and learn to work together as a team in solving problems. In his first semester as part of the peer leader training, he conducted research for his final project using theories of relational leadership, and presented this at the 4th Annual Conference of the Peer-Led Team Learning International Society held in May 2015 at the University of Texas at Dallas. A paper, based on this research, will be published as part of the 2015 Conference Proceedings. He is also serving as a Peer Facilitator for 9th graders as part of a college preparation program called Bridging the Gap, helping the students improve their problem-solving skills in algebra, and develop soft skills to help them navigate school.Francois is a member of Honors Scholars Program, National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), Student Success Leader and Black Male Initiative (BMI) where he spends his entire undergrad to mentor and tutor his fellows in STEM related subject. Hence, his time is splitting between assisting, mentoring, tutoring fellow students while he is a scholar conducting research.Francois was a Scholar of Integrated Optics for Undergraduates (IOU) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Columbia University. He conducted research on Programmable 4x4 Silicon Photonic Switch Fabric Composed of Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI). He is a former scholar of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in Satellite and Ground-Based Remote Sensing at the Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology (CREST) center, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). He got selected to be part of Microsoft Research Data Science Summer School for summer 2017. He got accepted at Cornel University to pursue a Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

I am a great tutor because I am excited to share knowledge, yet patient and understanding of different students. As a college student, I was a peer counselor, in which I empathetically and nonjudgmentally provided emotional support to others who were struggling with an issue. With these skills, I am comfortable with leading a student through academic material while minimizing frustration and confusion. Furthermore, my undergraduate training in human development allows me to confidently work with others whom are different ages and cultures. These skills help me communicate with a diverse population and serve as positive support through academic challenges.
Hello there! I would love to work with your student! I was the valedictorian of my high school, earning my diploma with a 4.6328 GPA (the highest in the history of my school), and I recently graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor's in Neurobiology and Behavior as I pursue God's calling for me to become a neurosurgeon. I was the captain of the Peer Tutoring Lab at my high school from 10th to 12th grade, so I have experience tutoring students from elementary to high school level. Because I understand the importance of fully grasping material and believe that students all approach content differently, I am a patient teacher willing to explain the same concept in different ways multiple times. I strive to create a warm, caring learning experience in my sessions because every student deserves a positive academic support system. I earned a score of 5 on both AP English Exams, a 1530 on the SAT, and won the National Merit Scholarship Competition in 2022. I'd love to work with you!

I have been working with students for several years now and have provided academic support to my peers throughout my time as a high school and now college student. Through my religious school, I taught students of all ages, ranging from Pre-K through 8th Grade. In high school, I helped prepare students for AP, SAT, ACT, and SAT subject tests as part of my role in the National Honor Society. I have considerable personal experience with a vast array of subjects and love sharing my knowledge and experience with others. From calculus to creative writing, I have a genuine passion for all academic pursuits and helping others feel the same way.
I am a sophomore at Cornell University. Hoping to pursue a career in government or law, I am studying to receive my Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, but I am most passionate about English, History, and Math. I specialize in SAT tutoring and am currently assisting many students prepare for the August SAT. I have also helped students with college application essays.
I love teaching, tutoring and helping people understand science. As an ecologist, I'm always interested in the connections between organisms, other organisms and the abiotic environment. I'm also interested in how humans interact with the non-human environment, especially in caring for ecosystems, protecting ecosystem services, transitioning to a carbon neutral economy, and ethics surrounding these issues. I care about students, particularly high-school and college aged students in the climate generation, and hope to equip my students with the knowledge and tools they need to make a difference in the world. I also absolutely love biology. The adaptations that allow organisms to survive their environments are endlessly fascinating. I hope to meet some of you and to be helpful as you proceed in a life of learning.

As a former AIME qualifier, I am well equipped with teaching the fundamentals of math.My teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive learning environment where students feel empowered to ask questions and explore concepts deeply. I believe that every student has unique strengths, and I strive to tailor my approach to meet their individual needs, fostering both understanding and confidence in their abilities. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy exploring new technologies and engaging in historical research, which further enriches my teaching practice. I am dedicated to helping my students achieve academic success and develop a lifelong love for learning.
I am a rising sophomore studying civil engineering at Cornell University. I enjoy tutoring math (algebra-calculus 3), high school and college physics, Spanish, and writing. I have experience tutoring throughout high school, where I was the head of a peer-tutoring program. I have continued tutoring in college as well.As a tutor, I always have 2 goals for students. First, I like to give my students the procedural knowledge of how to solve problems (ie- how would I answer a problem quickly on a test?). Then, I like to delve into the topic more to give a more intuitive understanding of the topic. In my free time, I enjoy origami, music (I play piano and sax), and reading.
I am passionate about empowering others to not only reach academic progress, but also gain a greater self-confidence through encouraging, patient tutoring. I am a middle school school STEM teacher seeking additional students to help in my out-of-work hours. Finally, I am a Cornell University alum and am confident in my ability to teach students in a range of fields - anything from English, ESL, art, writing, social studies to math and computers. Looking forward to hearing from you!Lena

I love tutoring and seeing students build confidence in their grasp of material. I enjoy tutoring Biology (Coursework, AP, SAT Subject Test) and Biochemistry because I love sharing my passion for "the study of life". SAT Math, SAT Writing, and SAT Verbal are my favorite subjects to tutor because I find it rewarding to see students feel more confident about a test that is nerve-racking for many. I believe in every student's capabilities to learn and improve. With my patience and motivating nature, I help students build confidence in their inherent abilities. In the last seven years, I have had a range of tutoring experience from being a Biochemistry Teacher's Assistant to teaching ESL classes online. I am a graduate of Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering. Since graduation, I worked as an engineer for more than two years. I am now preparing to go to medical school. In my spare time, I enjoying training for a half marathon, reading mystery books, dancing to Bollywood and Salsa music, and singing tunes that are stuck in my head.
I was a straight A student in high school, graduate Cum Laude from Stony Brook University, and went on to attend Cornell University for my MBA. Currently I'm a start-up consultant. I've always enjoyed teaching, however, that's why I like tutoring. I've a teaching assistant many times over, both in undergrad and grad school. I've also been a private tutor since high school. My goal is help you achieve, if not exceed your own. I believe in using a student's background and interests to help them understand concepts they may not grasp upon first review. I'm always available as a resource online when there in person. I really do enjoy tutoring, and I can't wait to be yours.
I completed my PhD in English at Harvard University in 2016 and I have been working with students for over 10 years. I've always enjoyed introducing students to new ideas and helping them achieve their goals. In the following paragraphs I'll share my background, detail my experience and expertise, and discuss what motivates me as a teacher. I will also explain my approach to pedagogy. In 2004 I graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University. The following summer I earned a CELTA certification to teach English as a second language in London. I then worked internationally for four years in Prague, Rome, Brussels, and Milan, teaching students of all ages and backgrounds. I helped hundreds of students score highly on the TOEFL exam and gain admission to top American and British universities. I also helped many students excel on the SAT and GRE verbal exam by helping them extend their vocabulary and develop their analytical reasoning skills.I left Europe when I was accepted to Harvard University's PhD program in English, which I began in 2008. I received my master's degree from Harvard in 2010 and the following fall I began assisting professors with their courses in Harvard College as a doctoral student. I worked closely with some of the best professors in the world and I modeled my unique pedagogy after their example. As a scholar with a traditional background in the liberal arts, I share my mentors' staunch commitment to the humanities and the Socratic method as the best way for young minds to discover their potential and develop critical reasoning skills. There are so many dubious test prep and admissions gimmicks out there, but the fact remains that America's best universities look for a particular kind of candidate, a well-rounded student who can reason confidently and express his or her pattern-breaking ideas with clarity, conviction, and grace. No matter what subject I happen to be teaching, everything I do as an instructor brings students a step closer to this significant achievement, one which will truly help them stand out from the crowd.Last year I worked full time for a veterans' non-profit, helping hundreds of servicemen and women transition from the military and gain admission to competitive American universities. Recently, however, I relocated to the Houston area because my fiancee, who also has a PhD in English, now teaches at a major university here. While I continue my research and work towards publishing my dissertation, I will be accepting students for verbal section test prep for all major standardized tests (SAT, ACT, TOEFL, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, etc.). I am also available for lessons in any humanities related field, from history and literature to philosophy, psychology, cultural studies, and world civilization. My broad experience as a teacher qualifies me to work with students from middle school all the way to the PhD.I look forward to hearing about your personal vision of success and helping you accomplish it!
My name is Heather. I graduated from Cornell University in 2022 with a major in psychology (minors in philosophy and law), and I am starting graduate school in September of 2024 (PhD in clinical psychology at UMass Boston). Throughout high school, I tutored all subjects at a nearby elementary school. I also tutored another high school student in Spanish, at the request of my Spanish teacher. Before college, I took a gap year to pursue music. During the gap year, I tutored a neighborhood seventh-grade girl in math and writing. Over the years, I have come to better understand how much I enjoy providing one-on-one support to children. I have been particularly successful in helping children who easily get frustrated and lose patience. As a recent student, I would be very excited to help others feel confident in their schoolwork. I understand the stress and frustration that can come with academics, and I would love to help students turn those feelings into pride, confidence, and enjoyment of learning. Please message me if you are interested or would like to learn more! I'd love to meet you.
My teaching specialties include Biology, Psychology, the Life Sciences, Reading, Writing, and preparation for verbal and writing test sections. I studied Biology at Cornell University, graduating with Honors in 2009, and earned a Master's in Psychology from the University of Chicago in 2010. I currently tutor students ranging from elementary to high school in critical reading and analytical writing, both as part of SAT prep and in the context of English and Social Studies classwork. I have a long history of teaching, starting with tutoring students in the introductory biology lecture at Cornell after I earned an A+ in the class. My passion for science education led me to volunteer with Roots and Shoots, an environmental education organization, to teach hands-on workshops for young children at the local science center about topics such as flower anatomy, animal tracks, and the popular 'egg drop'. I was also a peer counselor and trained incoming counselors, which involved teaching in front of large groups and leading small-group exercises. For my Master's thesis research, I became a research assistant at the Lincoln Park Zoo, studying the behavior of chimpanzees and gorillas. I frequently interacted with zoo guests as I collected my data and enjoyed teaching them about ape behavior, care, and conservation. Most recently, I took on students in my hometown of West Windsor, NJ as I prepared my Master's thesis for publication in a scientific journal.Motivating the next generation to be enthusiastic scholars and engaged citizens is one of my primary goals. I am particularly adept at communicating complex ideas, and I am eager to share this skill with younger students. In college I took several writing-intensive classes in my biology major, and I further honed my writing skill in my undergraduate Honor's thesis and my Master's thesis, which has been published. I scored very highly in the verbal and writing sections on the SAT and GRE, and I am well-placed to help your student improve his or her score as well as better comprehend and communicate his or her own ideas.
Hello! My name is Aleks and I am a MSEd student at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. I am originally from the Northwest side of Chicago, and grew up attending public schools and Polish Catholic school on the weekends. I graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and a Minor in European Studies and am very interested in international relations, research, and education policy. Most of my experience stems from mentorship and teaching roles in formal and informal learning spaces, providing college access, reading, math, and writing support to students K-12 as well as adult learners. As a student teacher, I am constantly exploring new teaching strategies and have particularly found a lot of joy working with bilingual and multilingual learners! My background as a native Polish speaker and first generation student has informed my path to supporting learners in building confidence in their rich linguistic repertoires.
I am a graduate of Cornell University, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Minor in Music. I hold a Masters of Arts in English from the University of Connecticut, where I am currently working on my PhD in American Literature. I tutor a mix of test preparation, English, Literature, and Writing. In helping students with reading and writing skills, I enjoy using multiple different approaches to develop a well-rounded understanding of the techniques, while making the sessions fun. I'm a strong proponent of keeping studying dynamic. It is important to me that my students come away from our sessions with not only the scores or grades they desire, but a deeper understanding of the topics and skills that will continue to benefit them beyond test day. In my spare time I love long runs, singing, hiking, and reading.
I am a rising senior at Cornell University studying biomedical engineering and minoring in law. As a member of the National Honor Society in high school and the engineering honor society at Cornell, I've tutored high school and college students in a variety of subjects, and I have also acted as a student teacher for a high school research class. I have experience tutoring elementary and middle school students as well from tutoring my younger brothers over the years.I teach a variety of subjects, but my favorite ones to teach are STEM and English-related subjects. I particularly enjoy helping students with their writing skills and working one-on-one with them to revise and edit essays or other written works. My goal as a tutor is to help students gain an understanding of the material in a comfortable and positive environment. I understand that everyone learns in a different way and at a different pace, and I'm happy to adjust my teaching style to suit an individual student's needs! In my free time, I enjoy spending time outside by running, biking, or swimming. I'm an avid reader and I love to travel, try new foods, and meet new people!
I am currently a student at Cornell University. I've returned to my hometown of Holly Springs for the summer and am looking forward to working with students who went through the same experiences I did. My tutoring experiences began with my little sister and gradually expanded as I continued through high school. Now that I'm in college, I think I can offer great insight into how to achieve great test scores and everything else that may be useful for getting into college. My tutoring strategies focus heavily on working closely with my students and developing a close rapport with them. I can't wait to get to know every one of them!
I am a creative whose ingenuity and nuanced insight is devoted to investigating the art of both expression and design. A professional with work experiences spanning scientific research, writing instruction/tutoring, and design in the field of technology, I have not only been able to witness the instrument of writing come into play distinctly for each specialty, but also realized exactly how to help the modern student tackling the ACT, SAT, and college admissions season in all of today's digital chaos. Hire me for a timeless, yet keen mentor who is dedicated to not only helping you get your foot in the door of your dream program(s) and school(s), but inspiring you to gain the type of confidence and understanding that will ultimately help propel you towards success in any and all of your future endeavors, since the art of expression in all of its various forms (for here, we will focus on writing) are oftentimes pivotal towards unlocking the doors you wouldn't have even known existed.
I am currently a student at Cornell University. I am working towards a BS in Biometry and Statistics. I hope to someday go to Medical School. Previously, I tutored middle school and high school students with the "Boys and Girls Club" in many subject areas from Chemistry to Statistics. Also, I led private sessions for high school students in my hometown community. I am most passionate about tutoring Mathematics. I am best in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Statistics and Geometry, but I can tutor other areas of Mathematics as well. I look forward to assisting students in the Math sections of the SAT as well. In working with students, I found that students enjoy what they are learning once they understand the material. I hope to instill additional study skills and tactics in tutoring. My biggest teaching philosophy is the importance of hard work as it is paramount to success. In my free time I like playing basketball, going out to get food, running, and fishing.
I am a chemical engineering student at Cornell University. I enjoy learning math and science and want to share my passion for these subjects. I have experience working as a sleep-away camp counselor and enjoyed those summers. I also have prior tutoring experience at the high school level.
Hi, I'm Sam! I am a sophomore at Cornell University where I study the world of labor and employment and work as a volunteer EMT. I am motivated to help students learn new things and overcome challenging obstacles. I have experience tutoring, working with kids in one-on-one and group settings, and I am dedicated, patient, and creative.I have experience tutoring students of all ages in a variety of subjects and settings. I worked as a volunteer elementary school enrichment tutor, a middle school homework tutor, and a member of the "History Center" when I was in high school. In addition to academic tutoring, I've worked with children as a camp counselor, lifeguard, and swim instructor.I'm passionate about working with students to strengthen their writing, discover historical connections, and unlock test taking strategies. I adapt my teaching style to fit each student's needs so that they can not only meaningfully learn content, but also explore strategies for approaching future learning. At school, I serve as the Membership Officer for our volunteer EMS agency, Cornell EMS, and am a member of the Cornell Political Union. Some of my favorite classes have included "Work, Labor, and Capital in the Global Economy," "Organizational Behavior," and writing seminars in mystery stories and ecofeminism.
I am a great teacher with over 8 years teaching experience teaching children from Grades K through 12. I received my B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. and a certificate in Special Education from the Hudson County Schools of Technology in North Bergen, New Jersey. I worked as a tutor for the State Tutoring Program in Arizona from 2013 to 2016. From the academic year of 2016 to 2017, I worked as a Substitute Teacher with Kelly Educational Services teaching Mathematics and English to elementary kids at the Roosevelt School district in Phoenix, Arizona.
I graduated from Cornell University studying Biology and choosing to specialize in Neurobiology and Behavior. I have an extensive background in math and science. I was pre- med during my four years and I am currently working part time while finishing my final year of medical school. Right after graduating, I participated in City Year, an AMERICORPS education focused non-profit that partners with schools needing the most assistance. I led the 9th Grade academy where my job was to design tailored math and science curricula for 6-8 high risk academic students in 5 different classes. I provided attendance and behavior sessions for another group of students and I served as the Math Coordinator for my team. Since then, I have been working with Varsity tutors and offering academic assistance to other students in my school. Although medical school and tutoring occupy most of my time, I enjoy watching and playing basketball and soccer (futbol). I am a big fan of hip hop and the arts, as well. I have seen that the biggest challenge that prevents students from succeeding is a lack of self confidence. My mother is a part-time business owner, who couldn't operate a computer on her own until this year. When I was young, she simply decided that she was 'bad at technology' and it stuck. Eventually, my sister and I sat her down and gave her instructions on how to access the internet. The next day, we taught her how to use Microsoft word. We made sure that she focused on each skill alone and ignored everything else that seemed confusing. Two weeks later, she got the hang of it. I tutor by presenting the subject matter in a similar way while frequently setting attainable goals so that students will realize how easy it is for them to master subjects on their own. It is the same method I use to learn all of the challenging material I encounter every day. I look forward to meeting you and helping you build the confidence and skills necessary to succeed.
I love learning and look forward to helping students feel more confident, prepared, and successful in school. I recently moved back to the Pittsburgh area to begin a private sector career after seven years as a diplomat, working overseas and in Washington DC. I am working as a tutor to share my passion for writing, languages (English and French), history, government, and politics with students. I enhance tutoring sessions with real-world examples and scenarios to make history, politics, social studies, and language arts come alive off the textbook page.
I graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Human Development, and a minor in Educational Studies. As part of my coursework, I spent much time working in K-12 classrooms, helping students garner valuable skills to succeed! Since graduation, I have started working at an academically enriching, after-school program for elementary school students. My favorite subject to tutor is Elementary Math because I enjoy getting the opportunity to work with young students whose educational trajectory can be significantly impacted by my help! I also enjoy tutoring the ACT because I like seeing how elated students are when their hard work begins to pay off, and their test scores rise.I believe that individualization of instruction is crucial to academic success because students are able to get targeted feedback on their own strengths and weaknesses, not the entire class's strengths and weaknesses. I also seek to be personally approachable to students because when there is a divide between tutor and tutoree, I do not believe that the student learns as much as they potentially can. I see the tutoring relationship as a two-way avenue in which both parties learn valuable, new skills throughout sessions. In my spare time, I like to spend time with my friends and family, volunteer, bake, play sports and read!
I recently graduated from college with a degree in engineering. Although it was taxing at times, an education in engineering allows students to draw connections between the theoretical realm of math or science with the physical world. I hope to create this context for the students that I tutor. Also, while I love learning and teaching subjects in math and science, I have a passion for language as well.
I am a junior at Cornell University where I am working toward a Bachelor of Arts in Physics. In the past, I have worked at Kumon as a math and reading tutor. I am most passionate about teaching Math, Physics, and Spanish. I try to bring that passion to each tutoring session so that the lessons are both interesting and enriching. My ultimate goal is simple: when a student is able to explain a topic or even teach it back to me, I am confident that they have truly mastered the material.
I am graduate of Cornell University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Film and Philosophy with Distinction in all subjects. I have experience teaching software classes for the Motion Picture Editor's Guild, and in teaching creative writing to my peers. I am available to tutor in many subjects, but I am especially passionate about writing and composition; I strongly believe that every person has a story worth telling and I want everyone to have the tools necessary to express themselves. My teaching style is one of patience and encouragement, but does not lose sight of deadlines.I am a lifelong lover of music, drama, and film. I played alto sax in the marching band and pep band at Cornell and was also a DJ at WVBR. I am actively involved in Motion Pictures and Theater in New York, and in my spare time I write and direct a Fantasy-Comedy audio-drama.
I graduated from Cornell University with a double major in Math and Physics. I am a prospective Math PhD student with research interests in geometry and mathematical physics. I have 1 year experience as a teaching assistant in mechanics and multivariable calculus. I have had multiple tutoring experiences beginning in high school with honors physics and now including calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, E&M, and quantum mechanics.I hope to help students develop both the tools to become independent learners and the confidence to face difficult problems head-on. I will work hard to ensure that students learn efficient study habits, develop proper problem-solving techniques, and gain an intuition for the mathematical and physical ideas they will encounter.I believe the best way to learn is by doing problems, and the best way to understand is by iteratively building on simple ideas. My tutoring approach will follow similarly to how I approached my undergraduate and graduate level courses. We will solve many problems and more importantly identify and classify the central ideas unique to each problem. We will make an honest effort to see how each new idea we learn fits in context with preceding ideas we have u
I have a BS in Chemistry from Michigan State University and an MS in Environmental Toxicology (focus on Environmental Chemistry) from Cornell University. I was an undergraduate TA for General Chemistry at MSU in the Lyman Briggs College of Science for 2 years and guest lecturer for a graduate-level Water Chemistry course at Cornell. I am currently a student at Otterbein University, working towards my teaching certificate for high school science. I've tutored over 40 students in General and AP Chemistry. I love tutoring because it gives me the chance to provide individualized attention and support to students.
As a Cornell Student and someone who raised my own SAT score from 1350 to 1480, scoring 770 in Math and 710 in Reading and Writing, I understand firsthand how the right approach can unlock a student's full potential. My teaching style is highly repetition-based: I focus on helping students master patterns, build confidence through consistent practice, and develop efficient problem-solving habits that stick. I also excelled in middle school and high school attending specialized schools. I have prior experience helping students prepare for the SAT, particularly in Math, where I emphasize conceptual understanding over memorization. I enjoy tailoring my sessions to each student's needs, ensuring that complex topics become intuitive and that progress is both measurable and motivating. My goal is to make studying less stressful and more methodical, showing students that progress comes from clarity, structure, and steady effort.
I've been a tutor for almost four years now and have always had a passion for both learning and teaching. I started tutoring in my neighborhood in the 9th grade. My experiences range from teaching 5th graders all the way to college students in both a classroom and a one-on-one setting. I am qualified to teach math subjects up to Trigonometry, SHSAT, SAT, and Economics. I would have to say that teaching SAT prep is my favorite course in that it tends to be the most stressful and intimidating subject for high schoolers. Seeing students overcome such boundaries is what make tutoring worthwhile for me. I believe that learning should be both challenging and rewarding, not scary and pointless. Having a tutor can take the fear away from learning a new topic and help the student better understand both the new topic and himself or herself. Currently, I am a premed student at Cornell University, working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Economics.
As a dedicated educator with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University, I bring over 10 years of tutoring and classroom experience across a wide spectrum of subjects, including AP Spanish Language & Culture, AP World History, Essay Writing, Debate, High School English, Reading Comprehension, College-Level Writing, foundational ELA skills, as well as Math, Social Studies, and Science. My teaching philosophy is rooted in creating a supportive, student-centered environment where learners feel confident expressing their ideas and engaging deeply with complex material. I adapt instruction to each learner's strengths, needs, and goals, emphasizing clear communication, critical thinking, and academic independence.
As an educator, an individual is required to fill various different roles in order to provide students with the most effective education possible. After reflecting upon my own formative educational experiences and the teachers that left a profound impact on my thought processes and belief in myself, I realized that educating extends beyond creating an engaging lesson plan, but also includes helping students learn more about themselves in order to shape them into leaders, life-long scholars and students, as well as servicemen and women who are passionate about giving back to their respective communities. Each student has his or her own unique learning style that is determined by his or her own personal experience and backgrounds. Because of this, it is important for an educator to not only provide rudimentary knowledge enclosed in textbooks, but to also fuel them with the inspiration they need to go out and learn more about the issues facing their communities in order to use their experiential learnings to help lift others out of their experiences. For much of my early life, I grew up feeling that I had many learning disabilities and that I could not learn and think like the other kids and was dumber because of it. However, from experience, I have realized that just because you think differently, that it doesn't mean that you think "worse" than everyone else. Learning this invaluable lesson through my own experiences makes me jump at the prospect to work with other students who have gone through similar challenges to help them unleash the power they have in discovering the strength nestled within knowledge. While I am an aspiring physician, I believe that there are many parallels between the two fields of medicine and education that would enable me to provide a unique and meaningful perspective to the classroom. Medicine demands effective education through teaching patients and their families about specific treatments, the manifestation of certain diseases, and the mechanisms of infection within specific physiological pathways. I truly began to appreciate this after interacting with my own pediatrician, who had built her own clinic from the ground-up using her knowledge, the power of education, and the strength of connection. Concerned parents entered the visiting room with coughing and crying parents and emerged with their worries assuaged and feeling more empowered knowing how to take care of their child. This considered, it is vital for every physician to become properly trained to handle these responsibilities: to be effective communicators and leaders, to dissect complex concepts into manageable chunks, and to serve as beacons of support to those seeking his or her support. This is why I want to become an educator before I embark on my medical school journey because I know that, without valuing this integral yet often disregarded facet of medicine, I will not be able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Diagnosis demands more than medicine - it requires care, attention and compassion. These skills, although may be taught in tandem with classroom lectures, can be more fully appreciated through connection and service. This is why I hope to become a Varsity Tutor in the near future: to help build connections with students through service and education as well as foster a passion for learning and academic leadership both in and out of the classroom.
I majored in math at Cornell University. I then went to law school and now write comedy for a theater in Manhattan. All the while I have been tutoring math at all levels from elementary to college level calculus. Due to my law school experience I have a very organized approach to my tutoring sessions; and due to my experience writing comedy I am able to have fun with my students and make them feel at ease. My students like working with me because they can tell that I care a lot about their success as well as their understanding and enjoyment of the subject matter.
Math is a language; it is creative, intuitive and serves a purpose. As a tutor I will help you master it with the fewest formulas to memorize and the most conceptual understanding, so that you will not forget everything a year later or blank out during an exam. This is the learning approach I used as an engineer in Italy, as an MBA student at CUNY, and in my PhD coursework at Cornell University. Also, it is the same approach I successfully shared as a teacher with math students of the Bronx Community College and Operations Management students of Baruch College and the Cornell Graduate School. Whether statistics, management or psychology majors, or new freshmen, they usually are able to grasp the "grammar rules" of a linear algebra problem before I proceed to formally state the theorem to be applied. While I continue today with my research work on probability models and my full-time college teaching, I enjoy guiding high school or older students, and middle school students beyond their grade level, through most mathematical subjects, statistics, management, and test prep. Now a long time New Yorker, I also enjoy the city by bike and the occasional getaway by hike, kayak, or cross country skis. I enjoy traveling, healthy cooking, and sharing the culture and language of my home country, Italy, with students and friends from all over the world.
