I'm often asked about my motivation to become (and stay) a teacher. My answer is always the same:The look on students' faces when they get something - it is priceless. Learning is hard, teaching is harder, but when the two meet and success is the outcome, nothing is more rewarding.I've been teaching at the college level since 1992 and have seen hundreds of my students go on to become happy and successful in their chosen careers. Some of those students, and many others who were not in my class, came to me for tutoring help since I teach a variety of difficult courses including: Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, andGeneral & Advanced Biology. It's been even more satisfying tutoring students than teaching a classroom - and even more successful for them. I have a very comfortable yet effective method of engaging my students and helping them learn. I use real-world examples and applications as much as possible to enable my students to grasp difficult concepts or topics. Since I have a wide variety of hobbies, personal interests, and experiences in the world, I have much to draw upon. As a small sampler, I enjoy and engage in sports such as tennis and swimming; have multiple hobbies such as chess, and coin & stamp collecting; and I have traveled many parts of the United States and held a variety of jobs from taxi driver to quality control engineer. Perhaps the best indicator of my success as a tutor is the recurring students who come back to me over and over, and the recommendations I get from them that sends me more than I can handle. My education includes a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Cornell University; a Master of Science in Applied Biology from Purdue University, and graduate courses in Animal Physiology, Symbiosis, and Educational Research from Western Kentucky University (online) and Florida Atlantic University, respectively. I taught at Palm Beach State College as an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences from 1992 to 2009, and have taught at Keiser University, West Palm Beach as a Professor of Biological Sciences since 2010.

By helping adolescents to define themselves based on their own talents and a valuable self-worth instead of trying to meet someone else's expectations, we can build students' confidence and academic success. We all have the right and responsibility to accept ourselves by defining who we are on our own terms and knowing what we stand for. This intricate balance can be achieved through increasing the availability and visibility of positive role models, advocating for participation in extracurricular activities, and educating students about goal setting and having high expectations for themselves.
Hello! My name is Ammaar and I am a sophomore at Cornell University studying Information Science and Computational Biology. As a former high school student eager to make my application the strongest and genuine as possible, I fell in love with the college application process. I have written and edited countless personal statements to college supplemental questions. Along with my interest in college applications, I also gathered various helpful strategies and techniques applicable in many situations on standardized exams--and understandable for any type of student! For all of my students I have a strong approach:- Confirming WHAT specifically you are struggling with- Examining WHY you are struggling with it- Establishing and Testing different methods and tips helpful specifically to you- Nailing down the topics you feel weak on
I am a current undergraduate student at Cornell University studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. I have a strong science and math background having taken many courses in Physics, Computer Programming, and various mathematics subjects ranging from Geometry, to Multivariable Calculus, to Differential Equations. I am also very passionate about English, Literature, Russian Studies, Spanish Language, and History. I believe that the key to success is having a well rounded education, so when I am not programming microcontrollers, one can either find me watching Russian news channels to polish up my vocabulary, reading textbooks on the history of the Middle East, or simply immersing myself in a Jane Austen novel. In my free time I also enjoy training for CrossFit, playing the viola, and traveling.I began tutoring in high school as part of my service requirement for the five honor societies that I was a part of, and I immediately fell in love with teaching. Nothing gives me more joy than being there when a student has that "aha" moment, when everything finally comes together and their eyes light up with joy. As a tutor I hope to share my passion for learning and inspire others to achieve their full potential as students.
I'm a recent Cornell graduate who is passion about personalized education. I studied English and Film, with a lot of everything else thrown in!As someone who's been stuck in classes that didn't do anything for me, I value the fact that everyone learns differently, and that variety and context, though integral to an engaged learning experience, are often lacking in traditional classrooms. I have remote teaching experience, so I'm looking forward to tutoring a wide variety of students online!
I've been a tutor for almost four years now and have always had a passion for both learning and teaching. I started tutoring in my neighborhood in the 9th grade. My experiences range from teaching 5th graders all the way to college students in both a classroom and a one-on-one setting. I am qualified to teach math subjects up to Trigonometry, SHSAT, SAT, and Economics. I would have to say that teaching SAT prep is my favorite course in that it tends to be the most stressful and intimidating subject for high schoolers. Seeing students overcome such boundaries is what make tutoring worthwhile for me. I believe that learning should be both challenging and rewarding, not scary and pointless. Having a tutor can take the fear away from learning a new topic and help the student better understand both the new topic and himself or herself. Currently, I am a premed student at Cornell University, working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Economics.
I am a sophomore at Cornell University in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). I graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School as a Law & Society major, and have lived in Manhattan my entire life. I am also an athlete. I'm currently a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo. I also played baseball and soccer competitively in high school. My main tutoring focus is algebra, which I enjoy teaching because it builds the foundation for success in more advanced math courses. My primary teaching experience comes from working as a lead teacher at NORY, a STEM-based summer camp. In that role, I managed classroom environments for children ages 8-12 while delivering inquiry-driven STEM lessons. These included introducing core physics concepts and beginner coding with platforms like Scratch through hands-on maker projects. In addition, I've spent significant time tutoring my younger sister in high school and middle school math. I love tutoring because it's rewarding to see students gain confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment as they improve. My approach is to connect with students personally and create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where they feel comfortable learning.
Hi!My name is Abby and I am excited to work with you!A little about me, I recently graduated with my Masters of Public Health from Boston University. Before that, I completed my Bachelors from Cornell University.I have many years of experience as a tutor and I have worked with students and children of all ages. I have been a swimming instructor, a flute teacher, and an English tutor. In college, I tutored students in Organic Chemistry.I try to make learning fun and accessible for everyone I work with. For younger children, I create games and activities to help keep them engaged. Activities can include skits, using props to help explain concepts, acting out scenes in stories to make reading fun, or using art to help illustrate ideas. I think that hands on learning works best for many young children. For older students, I like to teach using practice problems, and by having the student teach me what they have learned. I have found that if you are able to teach what you learned back to me, it means you truly understand it. I am also happy to accommodate your learning style if you know what works for you! I will work with you individually to make sure that you get the most out of your sessions.I would love the opportunity to help you excel!~Abby
I am a sophomore at Cornell University studying Computer Science.I enjoy working with students and for the past two years, I have privately tutored students for standardized tests and through the college application process. I believe that standardized testing is not a direct assessment of a student's academic abilities, but rather their specific abilities as a test-taker; my role as a tutor is to instill time-management skills and provide tips on effectively navigating through these exams in order to enable students to become better test-takers.In the realm of mathematics and computer science however, I believe in a proof-based education and truly understanding why theorems work as they do.
Hello! My name is Akanksha, and I am an Environmental Engineering major at Cornell University. I am incredibly passionate about sustainability and I enjoy mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Apart from Environmental Engineering, I am interested in Aerospace Engineering and Architecture, and I plan to pursue a minor in both of these fields. Outside of school, I hike and play golf for fun, but I also tutor several students. In high school, I worked at Kumon Learning Center and assisted students with their math and reading coursework. I am also currently a tutor for the STEP program at Cornell, where I teach middle school and high school students chemistry and mathematics. I am very comfortable tutoring in various STEM subjects (i.e. calculus, algebra, geometry, chemistry, physics, environmental science), and I enjoy tutoring sessions with students very much.
I graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Human Development, and a minor in Educational Studies. As part of my coursework, I spent much time working in K-12 classrooms, helping students garner valuable skills to succeed! Since graduation, I have started working at an academically enriching, after-school program for elementary school students. My favorite subject to tutor is Elementary Math because I enjoy getting the opportunity to work with young students whose educational trajectory can be significantly impacted by my help! I also enjoy tutoring the ACT because I like seeing how elated students are when their hard work begins to pay off, and their test scores rise.I believe that individualization of instruction is crucial to academic success because students are able to get targeted feedback on their own strengths and weaknesses, not the entire class's strengths and weaknesses. I also seek to be personally approachable to students because when there is a divide between tutor and tutoree, I do not believe that the student learns as much as they potentially can. I see the tutoring relationship as a two-way avenue in which both parties learn valuable, new skills throughout sessions. In my spare time, I like to spend time with my friends and family, volunteer, bake, play sports and read!
Math is a language; it is creative, intuitive and serves a purpose. As a tutor I will help you master it with the fewest formulas to memorize and the most conceptual understanding, so that you will not forget everything a year later or blank out during an exam. This is the learning approach I used as an engineer in Italy, as an MBA student at CUNY, and in my PhD coursework at Cornell University. Also, it is the same approach I successfully shared as a teacher with math students of the Bronx Community College and Operations Management students of Baruch College and the Cornell Graduate School. Whether statistics, management or psychology majors, or new freshmen, they usually are able to grasp the "grammar rules" of a linear algebra problem before I proceed to formally state the theorem to be applied. While I continue today with my research work on probability models and my full-time college teaching, I enjoy guiding high school or older students, and middle school students beyond their grade level, through most mathematical subjects, statistics, management, and test prep. Now a long time New Yorker, I also enjoy the city by bike and the occasional getaway by hike, kayak, or cross country skis. I enjoy traveling, healthy cooking, and sharing the culture and language of my home country, Italy, with students and friends from all over the world.
I am a rising sophomore studying civil engineering at Cornell University. I enjoy tutoring math (algebra-calculus 3), high school and college physics, Spanish, and writing. I have experience tutoring throughout high school, where I was the head of a peer-tutoring program. I have continued tutoring in college as well.As a tutor, I always have 2 goals for students. First, I like to give my students the procedural knowledge of how to solve problems (ie- how would I answer a problem quickly on a test?). Then, I like to delve into the topic more to give a more intuitive understanding of the topic. In my free time, I enjoy origami, music (I play piano and sax), and reading.
I have tutored and/or taught mathematics to elementary, middle, and high school students over 20 years. I enjoy teaching high school mathematics the most, i.e. Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. I am passionate about teaching mathematics because education is about students developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills by forming relationships with their peers and teachers. In my classroom, students learn best and develop those relationships in a safe, respectful, challenging environment that fosters inquiry, authentic experiences, collaboration, and provides appropriate support.
As a passionate educator with a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Virginia, I am excited to bring my extensive experience to support students in their academic journeys. I have over 5 years of teaching and tutoring experience, specializing in Biology and English, as well as test preparation for the SAT and GRE. My approach to tutoring focuses on creating engaging, meaningful connections to the content, utilizing fun strategies such as mnemonics and relatable examples to make learning enjoyable. Having taught both in the U.S. and abroad, I've learned to adapt my methods to meet students where they are, fostering a supportive environment that encourages curiosity and growth. I believe that when students see the relevance of what they are learning, they become more invested in their education, leading to lasting success. I look forward to inspiring students to discover their potential and develop their skills in a dynamic and enjoyable way.

I am passionate about teaching a variety of different subjects, including ACT and SAT preparation as well as English, history, economics, and mathematics.
Education has been one of my main passions since I was young and would play school with my little brother. I recently graduated from Cornell University where I received my Bachelors of Science with a major in Atmospheric Science and dual minors in Climate Change and Applied Economics. At Cornell, I was the Education & Outreach Chair for our Meteorology Club. I look forward to working with you on anything science or math. My specialties include physical sciences (Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physics) and math (algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics). Since graduating, I have taken a job as a substitute teacher and a part-time meteorologist! My tutoring style is generally for me to do an example then allow you to try before giving away any answers. My personal favorite subject to tutor is Earth Science because I get to use my background in meteorology! Outside of tutoring, I enjoy attending concerts, cooking/baking, biking, and DJing. I'd love to hear about some of your favorite bands!
My name is Rachel and I graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelors of Science in nutritional sciences. I am currently completing a pre-medical post-baccalaureate with plans to attend medical school in 2017. I have 6 years of tutoring experience in various subjects, primarily high school and college level science courses and standardized test preparation. I have a knack for taking seemingly complicated problems and translating them into easy to understand solutions. I like to cater my teaching methods in accordance to my student's learning style so information is better understood and retained. I also like to make learning fun!
I am a rising junior in Cornell University in the College of Engineering. Currently, I am studying Computer Science and Education with the goal of becoming a high school teacher for Mathematics and Computer Science. I have educated others in a wide variety of age groups and settings from public schools to private tutoring to summer camps. With the rise of computer science and programming I have firsthand experience on what the future of someone pursuing that field is like and how to prepare and stay motivated in that field. In my time aiding students I saw that motivation and having a goal is the most important part of learning the subject and becoming a better student to help accomplish the set goal.
Hi, I am currently studying Computer Science at Cornell University and would love to help anyone with STEM related fields and SAT/ACT Math test prep.
I am a junior at Cornell University studying Biology and Society. I've been interested in science and medicine for as long as I can remember, and I aspire to become a physician one day. Growing up, I always appreciated the value of education and what it opened up for me. I constantly had questions and was always eager to learn more. I've tutored for several years, and my favorite subjects to teach are definitely biology and math. As a tutor, I hope to answer students' questions, help them appreciate their academic interests even more than they already do, and learn more about myself and others.
I am a recent graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Master of Science in Animal Nutrition. I received my Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences from Cornell University. While I tutor various subjects, I am most passionate about tutoring math and feel that our school systems often fail students when it comes to math. I do not believe that some people simply "can't do math." I believe that some may need extra time and help, but everyone can do math. With patience and hard work, any student can learn. I also enjoy tutoring Spanish, which I have studied since I was in elementary. During undergrad, I even studied abroad in Barcelona and lived with a host family. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, dancing, TV/movies, and knitting.
My name is Jon Lash, and I am currently a Master's student at Cornell University. I graduated with my Bachelor's of Science from Cornell in 2016 and I plan to attend medical school in the fall of 2017. I am really excited to be tutoring for Varsity tutors because I really enjoy helping students with subjects that gave me trouble in school. I hope that my time spent developing strategies to learn and absorb the tough material can help you succeed.
I have an intimate relationship with tutoring, in part because it's sort of the only way I really learn: I don't really understand a topic until I can teach it to someone else. Because of that, when I was in school I would regularly be tutoring other students. I also spent hours and hours tutoring others over the Internet. For me teaching is an adventure. Everyone has different perspectives, and when you are teaching you have to be able to both provide a new perspective and to understand (so as to enlarge) someone else's perspective. In my non-teaching time, I am interested in Physics and Mathematics and working out practical problems from plumbing to electronics. I will someday go back for my Ph.D. in Physics but until then I am looking to grow as an engineer or computer programmer.
I graduated from Cornell University with a double major in Math and Physics. I am a prospective Math PhD student with research interests in geometry and mathematical physics. I have 1 year experience as a teaching assistant in mechanics and multivariable calculus. I have had multiple tutoring experiences beginning in high school with honors physics and now including calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, E&M, and quantum mechanics.I hope to help students develop both the tools to become independent learners and the confidence to face difficult problems head-on. I will work hard to ensure that students learn efficient study habits, develop proper problem-solving techniques, and gain an intuition for the mathematical and physical ideas they will encounter.I believe the best way to learn is by doing problems, and the best way to understand is by iteratively building on simple ideas. My tutoring approach will follow similarly to how I approached my undergraduate and graduate level courses. We will solve many problems and more importantly identify and classify the central ideas unique to each problem. We will make an honest effort to see how each new idea we learn fits in context with preceding ideas we have u
I love tutoring and seeing students build confidence in their grasp of material. I enjoy tutoring Biology (Coursework, AP, SAT Subject Test) and Biochemistry because I love sharing my passion for "the study of life". SAT Math, SAT Writing, and SAT Verbal are my favorite subjects to tutor because I find it rewarding to see students feel more confident about a test that is nerve-racking for many. I believe in every student's capabilities to learn and improve. With my patience and motivating nature, I help students build confidence in their inherent abilities. In the last seven years, I have had a range of tutoring experience from being a Biochemistry Teacher's Assistant to teaching ESL classes online. I am a graduate of Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering. Since graduation, I worked as an engineer for more than two years. I am now preparing to go to medical school. In my spare time, I enjoying training for a half marathon, reading mystery books, dancing to Bollywood and Salsa music, and singing tunes that are stuck in my head.

Hello! I am currently a Senior student at Cornell University's College of Engineering. I have been a tutor for the past three years, teaching elementary school level, middle school level, and high school level mathematics and the Spanish language. I enjoy working with and getting to know students as I develop individualized plans that best suit their learning style.
As an educator, an individual is required to fill various different roles in order to provide students with the most effective education possible. After reflecting upon my own formative educational experiences and the teachers that left a profound impact on my thought processes and belief in myself, I realized that educating extends beyond creating an engaging lesson plan, but also includes helping students learn more about themselves in order to shape them into leaders, life-long scholars and students, as well as servicemen and women who are passionate about giving back to their respective communities. Each student has his or her own unique learning style that is determined by his or her own personal experience and backgrounds. Because of this, it is important for an educator to not only provide rudimentary knowledge enclosed in textbooks, but to also fuel them with the inspiration they need to go out and learn more about the issues facing their communities in order to use their experiential learnings to help lift others out of their experiences. For much of my early life, I grew up feeling that I had many learning disabilities and that I could not learn and think like the other kids and was dumber because of it. However, from experience, I have realized that just because you think differently, that it doesn't mean that you think "worse" than everyone else. Learning this invaluable lesson through my own experiences makes me jump at the prospect to work with other students who have gone through similar challenges to help them unleash the power they have in discovering the strength nestled within knowledge. While I am an aspiring physician, I believe that there are many parallels between the two fields of medicine and education that would enable me to provide a unique and meaningful perspective to the classroom. Medicine demands effective education through teaching patients and their families about specific treatments, the manifestation of certain diseases, and the mechanisms of infection within specific physiological pathways. I truly began to appreciate this after interacting with my own pediatrician, who had built her own clinic from the ground-up using her knowledge, the power of education, and the strength of connection. Concerned parents entered the visiting room with coughing and crying parents and emerged with their worries assuaged and feeling more empowered knowing how to take care of their child. This considered, it is vital for every physician to become properly trained to handle these responsibilities: to be effective communicators and leaders, to dissect complex concepts into manageable chunks, and to serve as beacons of support to those seeking his or her support. This is why I want to become an educator before I embark on my medical school journey because I know that, without valuing this integral yet often disregarded facet of medicine, I will not be able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Diagnosis demands more than medicine - it requires care, attention and compassion. These skills, although may be taught in tandem with classroom lectures, can be more fully appreciated through connection and service. This is why I hope to become a Varsity Tutor in the near future: to help build connections with students through service and education as well as foster a passion for learning and academic leadership both in and out of the classroom.

I also have experience as a teaching assistant for an introductory biology class. I aim to create engaging and organized lesson plans tailored to individual student needs, fostering their confidence and love for learning. Additionally, my background in science and language, combined with my experience as a teaching assistant, equips me to inspire students in subjects like Conversational Spanish and Reading Comprehension. I believe that connecting with students and sharing my passion for learning is the key to their academic success.
After graduating from Cornell University with my Bachelors in Physics and German Studies, I am currently enrolled in the Materials Science and Engineering PhD program at the University of Michigan. I enjoy tutoring students because I was once on the other side of the table! While at Cornell, a physics graduate student provided me with supportive, concept-based, and empathetic tutoring that greatly increased my self-confidence and mastery of the course material. In my tutoring sessions, I use many techniques which I learned from him, and my #1 goal is to empathize with the student and make them feel valued despite their academic struggles. My tutoring sessions focus on helping the student understand the "why" -- "why is equation X appropriate and not equation Y?". From my own experience, this approach allows students to fully understand the course material and apply it in a variety of settings, from academia to careers and internships.I have completed over 500 hours of tutoring at 3 different companies, and have proofread cover letters and resumes for adults seeking new job opportunities. I continue to keep my German skills sharp by regularly watching German television and news, and have achieved CEFR Level C2 Proficiency (highest possible) in all areas of the German language (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
I completed my PhD in English at Harvard University in 2016 and I have been working with students for over 10 years. I've always enjoyed introducing students to new ideas and helping them achieve their goals. In the following paragraphs I'll share my background, detail my experience and expertise, and discuss what motivates me as a teacher. I will also explain my approach to pedagogy. In 2004 I graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University. The following summer I earned a CELTA certification to teach English as a second language in London. I then worked internationally for four years in Prague, Rome, Brussels, and Milan, teaching students of all ages and backgrounds. I helped hundreds of students score highly on the TOEFL exam and gain admission to top American and British universities. I also helped many students excel on the SAT and GRE verbal exam by helping them extend their vocabulary and develop their analytical reasoning skills.I left Europe when I was accepted to Harvard University's PhD program in English, which I began in 2008. I received my master's degree from Harvard in 2010 and the following fall I began assisting professors with their courses in Harvard College as a doctoral student. I worked closely with some of the best professors in the world and I modeled my unique pedagogy after their example. As a scholar with a traditional background in the liberal arts, I share my mentors' staunch commitment to the humanities and the Socratic method as the best way for young minds to discover their potential and develop critical reasoning skills. There are so many dubious test prep and admissions gimmicks out there, but the fact remains that America's best universities look for a particular kind of candidate, a well-rounded student who can reason confidently and express his or her pattern-breaking ideas with clarity, conviction, and grace. No matter what subject I happen to be teaching, everything I do as an instructor brings students a step closer to this significant achievement, one which will truly help them stand out from the crowd.Last year I worked full time for a veterans' non-profit, helping hundreds of servicemen and women transition from the military and gain admission to competitive American universities. Recently, however, I relocated to the Houston area because my fiancee, who also has a PhD in English, now teaches at a major university here. While I continue my research and work towards publishing my dissertation, I will be accepting students for verbal section test prep for all major standardized tests (SAT, ACT, TOEFL, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, etc.). I am also available for lessons in any humanities related field, from history and literature to philosophy, psychology, cultural studies, and world civilization. My broad experience as a teacher qualifies me to work with students from middle school all the way to the PhD.I look forward to hearing about your personal vision of success and helping you accomplish it!
I received a BA in Comparative Literature from Cornell University in 2013, and am currently working towards an MA in English at University of Connecticut. I have experience working with students K-12, as well as teaching First-Year Writing to undergraduates at UConn. I also worked for several years editing my college newspaper, and have additional experience in publishing. I specialize in teaching academic reading and essay writing, test prep and college readiness, and editing and verbal skills.I aim to understand each student's individual goals and approaches to learning, and gear my tutoring sessions to the student's particular needs. I find that we learn best when we understand the "why" behind the content, paired with practical and tangible methods. I have worked with students across ages and skill levels, and with a range of goals.
