As a passionate tutor with a Bachelor's of Science in Human Development and Information Science from Cornell University and the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, I have over 5 years of experience in helping students excel in college application essays and essay editing. I have helped students receive admissions to top universities including Cornell University, the University of Southern California, the University of Miami, Wake Forest University, Tulane University, Boston College, Georgetown University, and the University of Michigan. My teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive learning environment where students feel encouraged to express their ideas and develop their writing skills. I believe that effective communication is key to academic success, and I strive to connect with each student on a personal level to foster their confidence and creativity.

I love tutoring students because of how fun and rewarding it is. I attended Jericho High School where I was secretary of the peer tutoring club. I tutored over 50 hours each year in algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, biology, chemistry, and physics. My favorite subject tutor has always been any level of math through AP Calculus BC. I have also been an SAT tutor at my local test prep center in my senior year of high school. I'm currently a sophomore at Cornell University working towards a bachelor of arts in biological sciences. As a tutor, my ultimate goal is to make sure my students feel confident enough about a subject to answer questions without any help and feel prepared for their exams. I truly enjoy the tutoring process and the ability to help students find their own potential in any subject. I hope to be a good fit for any tutee, and I am willing to put the hours and effort in order to get improved results.
I am a graduate from Cornell University where I received a bachelor's degree in Biological Engineering with a minor in Mechanical Engineering. For several years, I have always had a passion for tutoring/teaching others around me whether they were children, classmates or adults much older than I. From my studies, my favorite subjects to help with were Mathematics and Physics; they are closely integrated with each other and personally it is rewarding when my students understand concepts that they initially struggled with. As for my past tutoring experience, I volunteered teaching GED courses around the Brooklyn area. I also took up private one to one sessions with locals who requested my help in subjects. Currently I am teaching an after-school program where I show middle school students STEM related topics through hands on activities. I am also volunteering with SAT Math through Brooklyn College on Saturdays and I am a part time bartender around the Park Slope area. When I am not busy working, I enjoy cycling, playing video games, and just kicking it back with friends.
I am a graduate of Cornell University, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Minor in Music. I hold a Masters of Arts in English from the University of Connecticut, where I am currently working on my PhD in American Literature. I tutor a mix of test preparation, English, Literature, and Writing. In helping students with reading and writing skills, I enjoy using multiple different approaches to develop a well-rounded understanding of the techniques, while making the sessions fun. I'm a strong proponent of keeping studying dynamic. It is important to me that my students come away from our sessions with not only the scores or grades they desire, but a deeper understanding of the topics and skills that will continue to benefit them beyond test day. In my spare time I love long runs, singing, hiking, and reading.
I am a Cornell University graduate, I majored in Biometry and Statistics. I am interested in helping students to succeed in their course work by sharing my passion for learning, and by helping students develop their critical thinking skills. I am particularly well suited to assist students with math and physics, subjects which I believe are fundamental in the process of "learning how to learn".My personal values are as follows;- Hard Work- Caring- Integrity- Do the Right Thing- Do Things Right- Teamwork- GratitudeMy goal is to nurture a partnership with students. Learning is a collaborative effort. Students need someone to work with as opposed to someone to work for, and I strive to provide that service to them.
As a passionate educator with a Master's degree in Statistics from Cornell University, I have over 2 years of tutoring and classroom experience in subjects such as Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Statistics. My teaching philosophy centers on fostering a supportive learning environment where students feel empowered to ask questions and engage deeply with the material. I believe that every student has unique strengths, and I strive to tailor my approach to meet their individual needs. Witnessing my students achieve their academic goals is what drives my passion for tutoring. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy exploring data visualization techniques and staying updated on the latest statistical methods, which I often incorporate into my lessons to make complex concepts more accessible and engaging.
I'm a recent Cornell graduate who is passion about personalized education. I studied English and Film, with a lot of everything else thrown in!As someone who's been stuck in classes that didn't do anything for me, I value the fact that everyone learns differently, and that variety and context, though integral to an engaged learning experience, are often lacking in traditional classrooms. I have remote teaching experience, so I'm looking forward to tutoring a wide variety of students online!
I am senior at Cornell University majoring in Philosophy and Government with minors in Law and Society and Near Eastern Studies. Hailing from Central New Jersey, I have had years of tutoring experience mostly focusing on the liberal arts for all ages. My priority is to create an interactive and adaptive learning environment in which each session I can familiarize myself with the student's needs and habits. The student steers the lesson and lets me know how I can help and I do my best to ensure each lesson is tailored to them personally. Learning is a vulnerable and valuable experience, one which I am honored to play a part in. Please feel free to ask about the relevant courses I have taken at Cornell as well as my experience in high school as a National Honor Society tutor.
I am a junior at Cornell University where I am working toward a Bachelor of Arts in Physics. In the past, I have worked at Kumon as a math and reading tutor. I am most passionate about teaching Math, Physics, and Spanish. I try to bring that passion to each tutoring session so that the lessons are both interesting and enriching. My ultimate goal is simple: when a student is able to explain a topic or even teach it back to me, I am confident that they have truly mastered the material.
I am currently a doctoral student at St. Johns University, working towards obtaining a Psy.D. in School Psychology. I graduated from Cornell University, where I studied Child Development. I absolutely love working with students of all ages. I have the most experience working with preschoolers with autism, but have also worked with adolescents with various behavioral difficulties. I am a recent graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Master of Science in Animal Nutrition. I received my Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences from Cornell University. While I tutor various subjects, I am most passionate about tutoring math and feel that our school systems often fail students when it comes to math. I do not believe that some people simply "can't do math." I believe that some may need extra time and help, but everyone can do math. With patience and hard work, any student can learn. I also enjoy tutoring Spanish, which I have studied since I was in elementary. During undergrad, I even studied abroad in Barcelona and lived with a host family. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, dancing, TV/movies, and knitting.
I'm a junior at Cornell University majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Mechanical Engineering. My academic journey combines a strong foundation in biology, physics, and design, which has given me a problem-solving mindset that I bring into every tutoring session. I graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, where I first discovered my passion for helping others learn. Since then, I've been tutoring for over four years, working with students of all ages to improve their skills in reading, math, and SAT prep.
Ashley is a medical student at RWJMS and recent graduate of Cornell University. She majored in chemistry and was awarded cum laude after spending a majority of her undergraduate career researching with the Lancaster Group. Ashley has over 4 years of tutoring experience.
I graduated from Cornell University in 2016 with dual bachelor degrees in biological engineering and biological sciences. Within biology, I concentrated in computational biology with an additionally strong focus in ecology and ecological applications of computation. I am currently working on my doctorate in Environment and Resources at Wisconsin-Madison, studying tiger ecology and conservation with sub-field foci on predator ecology, and modeling population dynamics. My tutoring strategy is to tackle topics of highest combined difficulty and priority first, and to do so in a manner that accommodates both myself and my student. I've found in past teaching experiences that the most rewarding and meaningful results come from direct engagement with students, and so that is what I aim to do. I've had experience with several modes of teaching and learning, and I am confident that I can successfully adapt my style to any student's needs.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cornell University in 2011 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. For the past decade I've worked in renewable energy designing wind turbines for some of the top tier global wind power companies. In 2017, I co-founded a wind power business that has been funded by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, US Department of Agriculture, and US Air Force. My approach to tutoring math and physics is to incorporate real life use cases. When students see the practical application of a subject, they are more likely to enjoy and understand it. I will incorporate aspects of renewable energy, wind power in particular, into my tutoring. Renewable energy is one of the fastest growing industries in the US and integrating it into a student's lessons can stimulate interest in a promising career path.Outside of mechanical engineering, my personal interests are soccer, carpentry, and kiteboarding.
I earned my bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, then worked in the computer database software industry as a pre-sales engineer, consultant, trainer, and quality assurance engineer. Consulting in several industries gave me broad exposure to real-world problems and a work ethic that may serve as a role model. I learned to listen to problems and come up with creative and practical solutions. As a trainer and pre-sales engineer, I co-wrote a tutorial, created class materials, and made many technical presentations about "leading edge" software, and so became skilled at explaining complex concepts. My work in QA reinforced my obsession with quality and gave me a good eye for seeing and diagnosing errors, which applies to student errors and misunderstandings.I have tutored on and off since my college days, in math, science and ESL. I approach tutoring with a positive attitude, a good ear for listening, patience, respect, and humor. I have a bias toward deep understanding rather than rote memorization.
I graduated with a B.A from Cornell University and majored in biology (premed) with a concentration in genetics. I first got into tutoring as a member of my high school's National Honor Society. The top students were encouraged to impart their knowledge through mandatory tutoring sessions. I found that I enjoyed helping others understand subject material and concepts. I felt like I was serving a greater purpose.Outside of tutoring I enjoy soccer, basketball, and ultimate frisbee. I am a big fan of the New York Yankees and New York Knicks. I am a sophomore at Cornell University, and I am planning to major in computer science.I sincerely believe that everyone is smart enough to understand everything, but each person needs a different amount of time and effort to get there.
Hi! I'm Mason, a Cornell student who enjoys helping students feel more confident in school. I work best by breaking things down step by step, answering questions without judgment, and making sure students understand the "why" behind an answer instead of just memorizing it. Whether we are working through homework, reviewing for a test, or building stronger study habits, I aim to keep sessions encouraging, clear, and low-stress.
I'm often asked about my motivation to become (and stay) a teacher. My answer is always the same:The look on students' faces when they get something - it is priceless. Learning is hard, teaching is harder, but when the two meet and success is the outcome, nothing is more rewarding.I've been teaching at the college level since 1992 and have seen hundreds of my students go on to become happy and successful in their chosen careers. Some of those students, and many others who were not in my class, came to me for tutoring help since I teach a variety of difficult courses including: Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, andGeneral & Advanced Biology. It's been even more satisfying tutoring students than teaching a classroom - and even more successful for them. I have a very comfortable yet effective method of engaging my students and helping them learn. I use real-world examples and applications as much as possible to enable my students to grasp difficult concepts or topics. Since I have a wide variety of hobbies, personal interests, and experiences in the world, I have much to draw upon. As a small sampler, I enjoy and engage in sports such as tennis and swimming; have multiple hobbies such as chess, and coin & stamp collecting; and I have traveled many parts of the United States and held a variety of jobs from taxi driver to quality control engineer. Perhaps the best indicator of my success as a tutor is the recurring students who come back to me over and over, and the recommendations I get from them that sends me more than I can handle. My education includes a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Cornell University; a Master of Science in Applied Biology from Purdue University, and graduate courses in Animal Physiology, Symbiosis, and Educational Research from Western Kentucky University (online) and Florida Atlantic University, respectively. I taught at Palm Beach State College as an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences from 1992 to 2009, and have taught at Keiser University, West Palm Beach as a Professor of Biological Sciences since 2010.
I graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Natural Resources. Upon graduating, I joined Teach For America as a middle school science teacher working in a public school in the Bronx, New York. I taught sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth grade Math and Science for six years before enrolling in a Post-Baccalaureate program for health sciences professions at Rutgers University. In this one year program, I am taking pre-requisite courses to be eligible for medical school. I enjoy tutoring Science as well as Math and especially enjoy helping students overcome anxieties and fears they have associated with these subjects. In my spare time I enjoy running, biking, and swimming as well as baking.
I am a rising sophomore at Cornell University, studying Human Biology, Health and Society. I am on the premed track and am pursuing a minor in South Asian Studies. I was born in India and grew up in Singapore and Buffalo, NY, where I currently live. This past semester, I tutored middle and high school students in math, biology, and chemistry in Ithaca. I also particularly enjoy tutoring for standardized tests such as the ACT, as I feel it is where students are able to make a lot of progress quickly, and it also tends to be the most rewarding for both the students and for me! As someone who loves making organized and detailed plans, I believe having a clear set of goals for one's future is the key to success, and this can be applied to anything, from a single test to one's entire career. I would love to help my students with setting goals and making plans in their high school and/or college careers, in addition to tutoring a specific subject! In college, I am most involved with Cornell's Hindu Student Council and SPICMACAY, an Indian classical music and dance organization. Outside of academia, I sing South Indian classical music and play many different genres of the piano.
My name is Jon Lash, and I am currently a Master's student at Cornell University. I graduated with my Bachelor's of Science from Cornell in 2016 and I plan to attend medical school in the fall of 2017. I am really excited to be tutoring for Varsity tutors because I really enjoy helping students with subjects that gave me trouble in school. I hope that my time spent developing strategies to learn and absorb the tough material can help you succeed.
I have just graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and am very excited to begin my career as a professional. Explaining complex concepts and methods in mathematics and physics has always come naturally to me, and I've made great use of this skill as a tutor. While math and physics are my forte, I am also adept in tutoring english grammar, language, and literature. There are few things I enjoy more than a true challenge, whether it be physical or mental. I aspire to be a great inventor and hope that my ideas and creations may simplify life as we know it and bring health, comfort, and joy to the masses. My favorite book is "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett and I recommend that everyone read promptly.
I am a chemical engineering student at Cornell University. I enjoy learning math and science and want to share my passion for these subjects. I have experience working as a sleep-away camp counselor and enjoyed those summers. I also have prior tutoring experience at the high school level.
I have a BS in Chemistry from Michigan State University and an MS in Environmental Toxicology (focus on Environmental Chemistry) from Cornell University. I was an undergraduate TA for General Chemistry at MSU in the Lyman Briggs College of Science for 2 years and guest lecturer for a graduate-level Water Chemistry course at Cornell. I am currently a student at Otterbein University, working towards my teaching certificate for high school science. I've tutored over 40 students in General and AP Chemistry. I love tutoring because it gives me the chance to provide individualized attention and support to students.
My teaching experience began in high school, when my dad was a teacher at a weekend Chinese school in Westchester County, New York. I substituted for him while he went to China for a few weeks. The students loved me even though I wasn't that much older than them (they were middle school students). After college I spent a year in Beijing and tutored adults in English and Chinese. In 2007 I taught a GRE class at Baruch College in Manhattan. In 2007 I began working on Wall Street while volunteering after work. Most recently from 2012-2014 I was a volunteer tutor at the Fresh Air Fund in midtown Manhattan, where I worked with inner city middle school students after school on a one-on-one basis (two hour sessions once to twice a week).I love tutoring and I am comfortable tutoring all subjects ranging from Math, English, Foreign Languages (beginner to advanced Mandarin or French, beginner Spanish), Social Studies, History, Science and test-preparation.
I believe most people learn best by practicing, but it has to be the right kind of practice. Flailing around at something intimidating, where you don't know how to even start, can be discouraging and counterproductive. I try to provide enough scaffolding to make students feel safe exploring, and to try something else if the first approach doesn't work. I also try to teach the process of solving problems, which students can use for themselves as they build confidence.I have a Masters Degree in Chemistry from Cornell, where I was a teaching assistant for Introductory Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. While pursuing a PhD at RPI, I was a volunteer tutor for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering students. While working in industry, I taught my co-workers Statistics, Experiment Design, and Technical Writing. More recently, I have been a professional independent tutor, helping students with test prep, Math, Statistics, Chemistry, and Physics. I help teens and adults overcome fears (especially fear of Math) so they can learn more effectively and solve problems confidently.I teach test prep, Math, Statistics, Chemistry, and Physics. I especially like teaching Math, because I find it so satisfying to help students overcome the barriers related to thinking they "can't do Math." Whether my students want to use Math to excel in Science, or to get top scores on standardized tests, or just recognize when somebody is lying to them with Statistics, I like knowing I can help.
I am committed to helping students achieve success in a number of subjects by pinpointing specific areas where they need help as well as determining the teaching style under with which they learn best.
I am a graduate of Cornell University and received a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Currently, I am working as an Assistant Director at a preparatory school managing and teaching students simultaneously. In the recent years at the school, I have been focusing more on the Reading portions of standardized tests but have at times assisted students in the math and science portions as well usually one-on-one. I strongly believe that every students has their own style of learning and must learn at their own pace. Although, sometimes giving them too much leeway may not always be the best solution, I am there to also provide encouragement and challenge to make the learning process enjoyable and beneficial. Apart from work, I do enjoy reading, jogging, exploring New York City, and playing the violin during my spare time.
I recently retired from teaching science after 16 years in the classroom including high school and middle school. I also taught algebra and pre-calculus at a community college in my spare time. I miss my interactions with students and find that tutoring is very rewarding. My favorite moment is when I see the "light bulb" showing that a student understands what they need. I believe that understanding why a solution works is much more important than simply memorizing. Earning my master's degree in education and becoming a teacher was my mid-life crisis. Before that, I worked in industry as a chemical engineer and then a project manager for many years after earning my Bachelor of Science at Cornell University. While I tutor a range of subjects, my favorites are chemistry and physics because I think that they are the most interesting! However, I also help students with math and algebra because a solid foundation in these is critical for success in science.
I am currently a rising junior at Cornell University studying physics. I have worked with students of the elementary, middle, and high school levels in subjects such as math, physics, and even music production! I mainly focus on tutoring math and physics because I believe having a deep understanding of these subjects allows one to think more analytically of the world around us. I also believe in getting to know how a student learns best, as everyone learns differently, and tailoring lessons with that learning method in mind.
I am a sophomore at Cornell University studying Biological Sciences and Spanish. I do molecular bio/genetics research with fruit flies, dance, and sing in the CU chorus. I was the student director of my high school's Academic Resource Center, tutoring in math, science, Spanish, and SAT/ACT for 3+ years. I have worked with Varsity Tutors for about 2 years.
Engineering student at Cornell university, interested in mathematics, statistics, physics. previous SAT Math/English, Pre-Calculus, Calculus tutor. I'm very friendly, and have much experience quickly transforming students' test taking skills to the next level.
I am a recent graduate of Cornell University. I graduated from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell with a Bachelor’s in Science. I majored in Biology with a concentration in Molecular and Cell Biology. I am currently working in medical research here in New York and am planning on applying to MD and MD/PHD programs. I have worked in many different study group environments and I believe that putting topics and ideas into the proper context makes the information easier to process as well as more memorable to the student. I have seen this in everything from US History to biology and truly believe this is the best way to fully understand and grasp new concepts. My down time consists of a lot of physical activity, whether that is in the form of going to the gym or playing ice hockey and soccer. I find staying physically active is a great way to balance the academic challenges in my life and allows for me to have a productive escape whenever I need one.
