I am a graduate of Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with Distinction in 2015. Since graduation, I was a physics/chemistry teacher and soccer coach at a private school in Virginia for a year, where I led the soccer team to an undefeated season. Before teaching and coaching professionally, I was a Teaching Assistant for the Cornell Math and Physics Departments, where I taught many subjects including calculus, mechanics, electromagnetism. Throughout my time at Cornell and as a teacher, I tutored subjects ranging from the SAT to AP Physics and Algebra II, which is where my true talents lie: in small group or one-on-one settings where I can give students the full attention they deserve and tailor my approach specifically to their learning styles. This is why I am now pursuing tutoring as a part-time occupation at Varsity Tutors. I embrace teaching all math and science subjects, especially physics and calculus, at both the college and high school level and will go above and beyond to make sure all of my students succeed, according to their definition of success. In my spare time, I enjoy playing league soccer, basketball, tennis and guitar, and also like to travel and see as much of the world as I can.

I am a graduate of Cornell University college of engineering and a native Mandarin Chinese speaker fluent in both Chinese and English. I moved to the US when I was 9 years old. I am warm, attentive, and love to use humor and creativity in my tutoring. I have 2 young kids of my own and especially passionate about working with children in preschool to elementary school who are interested in Chinese language and culture. I also have deep experience in the business world so can guide adults in learning Mandarin for business and travel.Additionally I love writing and literature and enjoy working with high-schoolers in perfecting their college admissions essays. I also have a background in engineering and can provide tutoring in elementary through college level math and science subjects.
I teach all types of writing. My students range from high school students writing course papers and essays to university students composing research papers and dissertations to adults engaged in self-study with creative writing. Some of my creative writing courses are "The Courage to Write Poetry Workshop" and "Writing My Multicultural Voice." I earned my PhD and MS degree from Cornell University; my BA is from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.
As a Cornell Student and someone who raised my own SAT score from 1350 to 1480, scoring 770 in Math and 710 in Reading and Writing, I understand firsthand how the right approach can unlock a student's full potential. My teaching style is highly repetition-based: I focus on helping students master patterns, build confidence through consistent practice, and develop efficient problem-solving habits that stick. I also excelled in middle school and high school attending specialized schools. I have prior experience helping students prepare for the SAT, particularly in Math, where I emphasize conceptual understanding over memorization. I enjoy tailoring my sessions to each student's needs, ensuring that complex topics become intuitive and that progress is both measurable and motivating. My goal is to make studying less stressful and more methodical, showing students that progress comes from clarity, structure, and steady effort.
I am a recent graduate from Cornell University, with a degree in Biological Sciences and a concentration in Genetics, Genomics, and Development, and a minor in Jewish Studies. I'll soon be headed to med school, but in the meantime, I want to help kiddos learn math and science in a way that makes it fun and accessible!
I graduated from Cornell University with a double major in Math and Physics. I am a prospective Math PhD student with research interests in geometry and mathematical physics. I have 1 year experience as a teaching assistant in mechanics and multivariable calculus. I have had multiple tutoring experiences beginning in high school with honors physics and now including calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, E&M, and quantum mechanics.I hope to help students develop both the tools to become independent learners and the confidence to face difficult problems head-on. I will work hard to ensure that students learn efficient study habits, develop proper problem-solving techniques, and gain an intuition for the mathematical and physical ideas they will encounter.I believe the best way to learn is by doing problems, and the best way to understand is by iteratively building on simple ideas. My tutoring approach will follow similarly to how I approached my undergraduate and graduate level courses. We will solve many problems and more importantly identify and classify the central ideas unique to each problem. We will make an honest effort to see how each new idea we learn fits in context with preceding ideas we have u
Hi! I'm Dr. Calum Russell and I am a biologist in North Carolina. I currently teach at Wake Technical Community College (Biology) and am an agricultural scientist (plants and insects). I've taught in community college settings for over 5 years and have led informal education seminars around insects, microbes, and plants for over 20 years. When I'm not working, teaching, or tutoring, I can be found out walking my dog, running on the trails, or reading about the most recent scientific discovery in the news!
I love teaching, tutoring and helping people understand science. As an ecologist, I'm always interested in the connections between organisms, other organisms and the abiotic environment. I'm also interested in how humans interact with the non-human environment, especially in caring for ecosystems, protecting ecosystem services, transitioning to a carbon neutral economy, and ethics surrounding these issues. I care about students, particularly high-school and college aged students in the climate generation, and hope to equip my students with the knowledge and tools they need to make a difference in the world. I also absolutely love biology. The adaptations that allow organisms to survive their environments are endlessly fascinating. I hope to meet some of you and to be helpful as you proceed in a life of learning.
My goal as a teacher is to impart knowledge of the subject matter and enthusiasm for the material to as many students as possible. Making the material enjoyable to students requires employing multiple methods for teaching the subject matter. Each student will approach a subject from a different background, each student will learn most effectively through a different method, and each course will require a different technique.Having served as a teaching assistant at three different universities, I have experience at connecting with students regardless of the campus, class sizes, and student backgrounds. My biggest strength as a teaching assistant and a lecturer has been my ability to connect with students with diverse backgrounds enough so they feel comfortable approaching me with questions or concerns about the material. My students have a diverse range of educational and economic backgrounds, so I have to cater the material accordingly. Classes I have served as a TA for include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science. I have also taught chemical engineering thermodynamics and tutored ACT/SAT/PSAT prep for high school students, and high school math and science. In addition, I have worked in various biological and engineering labs over the years, so I have technical expertise in many general undergraduate science classes. One of my main goals as an educator is to produce students that both feel confident in their own abilities to do independent work while also knowing when and how to rely on individuals with other skill sets to help fill in the gaps. While my students submit homework and tests individually, projects are conducted as group work, and I encourage students to work collaboratively while solving homework problems. This is to encourage better material understanding and a necessary skill in teamwork, while also making sure students are taking some initiative and are not completely reliant upon their classmates.I hope this gives you a sense for the kind of tutor I will be. Please let me know if you have any questions.
As a passionate educator with a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Virginia, I am excited to bring my extensive experience to support students in their academic journeys. I am a sophomore at Cornell University in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). I graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School as a Law & Society major, and have lived in Manhattan my entire life. I am also an athlete. I'm currently a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo. I also played baseball and soccer competitively in high school. My main tutoring focus is algebra, which I enjoy teaching because it builds the foundation for success in more advanced math courses. My primary teaching experience comes from working as a lead teacher at NORY, a STEM-based summer camp. In that role, I managed classroom environments for children ages 8-12 while delivering inquiry-driven STEM lessons. These included introducing core physics concepts and beginner coding with platforms like Scratch through hands-on maker projects. In addition, I've spent significant time tutoring my younger sister in high school and middle school math. I love tutoring because it's rewarding to see students gain confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment as they improve. My approach is to connect with students personally and create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where they feel comfortable learning.
I'm a recent graduate of Cornell University with a major in Chemical Engineering. I'm strong in Chemistry subjects and can definitely help out with most Math subjects as well, whether it's for the SATs or regular schoolwork. I really empathize with the academic struggle and want to help as many students as I can with the unique experience I have! :)
I've been a tutor for almost four years now and have always had a passion for both learning and teaching. I started tutoring in my neighborhood in the 9th grade. My experiences range from teaching 5th graders all the way to college students in both a classroom and a one-on-one setting. I am qualified to teach math subjects up to Trigonometry, SHSAT, SAT, and Economics. I would have to say that teaching SAT prep is my favorite course in that it tends to be the most stressful and intimidating subject for high schoolers. Seeing students overcome such boundaries is what make tutoring worthwhile for me. I believe that learning should be both challenging and rewarding, not scary and pointless. Having a tutor can take the fear away from learning a new topic and help the student better understand both the new topic and himself or herself. Currently, I am a premed student at Cornell University, working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Economics.
I am a student at Cornell University pursuing a double major in Biological Sciences, concentrating in computational biology, and Computer Science. I have always loved to teach students! As a certified special education and general education teacher, with a Master of Arts in Teaching, I have been able to work in public schools to address the differentiated needs of elementary education students. Working one on one in tutoring sessions enables me to hone in on particular needs of my students, at different grades and levels. Sometimes, content or format modifications are required. Other times, delivery of instruction or positive reinforcement pertaining to confidence and motivation is needed. Input from family members and students is helpful to the learning process. Ultimately, the joy of current learning and motivation to learn in the future is of essence.
I am a graduate of Cornell University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, with a focus in Systems Biology. After graduation, I joined a rotational leadership development program which has allowed me the opportunity to expand my knowledge into many industries and functional areas, as well as work with colleagues from around the world.Throughout my life, I have been passionate about learning, and have shared this love for learning through teaching. My first experiences of teaching came early in life, when a teacher recommended that I use my mastery of content and easy way of explaining material to tutor fellow students after school. From those first moments of realizing the enormously positive impact I could have in a student's ability to master content, I have always incorporated teaching into my life. In college, I tutored extensively in fundamental engineering courses, and conducted workshops to further strengthen my students' understanding of the material. Standardized testing is one of my strong suits, and I enjoy helping students advance in their performance in Critical Reading, Math, and Writing.I believe a strong foundation in education is vital for future success. I've had wonderful opportunities because of my strong educational background, and I try to impart this appreciation to all my students. In my spare time, I enjoy teaching dance, playing music, and traveling throughout the US and the rest of the world.

I am dedicated to helping my students achieve academic success and develop a lifelong love for learning.
I am a sophomore at Cornell University studying Computer Science.I enjoy working with students and for the past two years, I have privately tutored students for standardized tests and through the college application process. I believe that standardized testing is not a direct assessment of a student's academic abilities, but rather their specific abilities as a test-taker; my role as a tutor is to instill time-management skills and provide tips on effectively navigating through these exams in order to enable students to become better test-takers.In the realm of mathematics and computer science however, I believe in a proof-based education and truly understanding why theorems work as they do.
My academic background is focused on the Biological Sciences, Writing, and Editing. I have worked as an Educator in the fields of Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture. Both fields require a thorough understanding of Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and other Sciences. The age range of students I have worked with is broad, from elementary students to young adults. This variety has made me a more flexible Teacher and I am comfortable with changing my approach to best meet my students' needs. It is important to respect each students' individual learning styles and help them figure out how they can best work with their strengths. Students need information presented as simply as possible, yet can benefit from thinking about the same information in different ways; striking this balance keeps students engaged. I also answer and ask questions carefully, helping students learn how to think through problems on their own and truly understand the correct answers. Through working with me, students can become more independent and confident, knowing that they have the critical thinking skills needed to continue to learn and meet their goals.

After graduating from Cornell University with my Bachelors in Physics and German Studies, I am currently enrolled in the Materials Science and Engineering PhD program at the University of Michigan. I enjoy tutoring students because I was once on the other side of the table! While at Cornell, a physics graduate student provided me with supportive, concept-based, and empathetic tutoring that greatly increased my self-confidence and mastery of the course material. In my tutoring sessions, I use many techniques which I learned from him, and my #1 goal is to empathize with the student and make them feel valued despite their academic struggles. My tutoring sessions focus on helping the student understand the "why" -- "why is equation X appropriate and not equation Y?". From my own experience, this approach allows students to fully understand the course material and apply it in a variety of settings, from academia to careers and internships.I have completed over 500 hours of tutoring at 3 different companies, and have proofread cover letters and resumes for adults seeking new job opportunities. I continue to keep my German skills sharp by regularly watching German television and news, and have achieved CEFR Level C2 Proficiency (highest possible) in all areas of the German language (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
As an educator, an individual is required to fill various different roles in order to provide students with the most effective education possible. After reflecting upon my own formative educational experiences and the teachers that left a profound impact on my thought processes and belief in myself, I realized that educating extends beyond creating an engaging lesson plan, but also includes helping students learn more about themselves in order to shape them into leaders, life-long scholars and students, as well as servicemen and women who are passionate about giving back to their respective communities. Each student has his or her own unique learning style that is determined by his or her own personal experience and backgrounds. Because of this, it is important for an educator to not only provide rudimentary knowledge enclosed in textbooks, but to also fuel them with the inspiration they need to go out and learn more about the issues facing their communities in order to use their experiential learnings to help lift others out of their experiences. For much of my early life, I grew up feeling that I had many learning disabilities and that I could not learn and think like the other kids and was dumber because of it. However, from experience, I have realized that just because you think differently, that it doesn't mean that you think "worse" than everyone else. Learning this invaluable lesson through my own experiences makes me jump at the prospect to work with other students who have gone through similar challenges to help them unleash the power they have in discovering the strength nestled within knowledge. While I am an aspiring physician, I believe that there are many parallels between the two fields of medicine and education that would enable me to provide a unique and meaningful perspective to the classroom. Medicine demands effective education through teaching patients and their families about specific treatments, the manifestation of certain diseases, and the mechanisms of infection within specific physiological pathways. I truly began to appreciate this after interacting with my own pediatrician, who had built her own clinic from the ground-up using her knowledge, the power of education, and the strength of connection. Concerned parents entered the visiting room with coughing and crying parents and emerged with their worries assuaged and feeling more empowered knowing how to take care of their child. This considered, it is vital for every physician to become properly trained to handle these responsibilities: to be effective communicators and leaders, to dissect complex concepts into manageable chunks, and to serve as beacons of support to those seeking his or her support. This is why I want to become an educator before I embark on my medical school journey because I know that, without valuing this integral yet often disregarded facet of medicine, I will not be able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Diagnosis demands more than medicine - it requires care, attention and compassion. These skills, although may be taught in tandem with classroom lectures, can be more fully appreciated through connection and service. This is why I hope to become a Varsity Tutor in the near future: to help build connections with students through service and education as well as foster a passion for learning and academic leadership both in and out of the classroom.
Hello there! I would love to work with your student! I was the valedictorian of my high school, earning my diploma with a 4.6328 GPA (the highest in the history of my school), and I recently graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor's in Neurobiology and Behavior as I pursue God's calling for me to become a neurosurgeon. I was the captain of the Peer Tutoring Lab at my high school from 10th to 12th grade, so I have experience tutoring students from elementary to high school level. Because I understand the importance of fully grasping material and believe that students all approach content differently, I am a patient teacher willing to explain the same concept in different ways multiple times. I strive to create a warm, caring learning experience in my sessions because every student deserves a positive academic support system. I earned a score of 5 on both AP English Exams, a 1530 on the SAT, and won the National Merit Scholarship Competition in 2022. I'd love to work with you!
Throughout my academic and professional careers, I have always enjoyed mentoring younger individuals through activities like tutoring and advising. During my undergraduate career at Cornell University, I served as an orientation leader and student adviser for classmates in my major. While pursuing my MBA at Columbia Business School, I participated in the Harlem Tutorial Program, where I worked across a range of subjects with elementary and middle school students. I recently graduated magna cum laude with honors from Messiah University (located near Harrisburg, PA) with a B.S. in biochemistry (ACS certified). This fall I will be starting a biochemistry Ph.D. at Cornell University. While a student at Messiah, I served as a supplemental instruction leader for general chemistry courses. This involved sitting in on the lectures and holding two 90 minute review sessions each week in which I would create worksheets and activities to help students to learn and retain the information from the course. I really enjoy working with students in chemistry and biology courses, as I love sharing my passion for science with others. Furthermore, I believe that students have different learning styles and as a tutor it is my job to accommodate whichever learning style best suits each student. I value getting to know my students on a personal level as well as an academic level in order to best help them succeed. Outside of academics, I'm an avid distance runner, love hiking and being outside, listening to music, and doing jigsaw puzzles.
Hi! I'm a Cornell-educated tutor who enjoys helping students succeed in biology, genetics, and other science subjects. I know that science courses can sometimes feel overwhelming, so I focus on making difficult topics easier to understand through clear explanations, real-world examples, and step-by-step problem solving. I work with students at their individual pace and encourage them to ask questions freely. Whether you need help preparing for a test, completing assignments, reviewing difficult concepts, or building confidence in the subject, I'm committed to helping you reach your goals. I graduated Cornell University in 2015 with a B.S. in Human Biology, Health, and Society. After graduating, I worked as a research technician at Columbia University Medical Center before going to India for a 4-week global health educational program. Currently, I am preparing to apply to medical school.I have acquired considerable teaching and mentoring experience in the past seven years. In high school, I tutored elementary and middle school students in math and general homework help. As a general chemistry tutor at Cornell University, I guided students through problem sets and exam preparation. To effectively do so, I integrated the knowledge and skills that I had gained through my own experience as a student in general chemistry as well as in other disciplines. While a teaching assistant for a nutrition laboratory course, I worked with the instructors to promote an appreciation for positive nutritional practices. Furthermore, six days a week for almost two years, I helped two local children achieve psychological and reading skills by utilizing psychoeducational books as a tool. Finally, I mentored two internationally-adopted youths in Japanese language and culture. Through these experiences, I have developed interpersonal and professional skills necessary to be an effective, reliable, and fun tutor.
I graduated Cornell University magna cum laude with degrees in History and Philosophy. After graduation, I consulted for two years and helped build Hawaii's new Health Insurance Marketplace. I also created an educational current events newsletter. I then joined a start up in NYC where I mentored and coached two analysts. I was most drawn to the teaching side of these experiences and find that the skills translate well to tutoring when complemented with my passion for history, English, writing, philosophy, and persuasive argumentation. In the tradition of philosophy, I feel tutoring is most effective using a Socratic dialogue approach, asking the right questions to guide the student to understanding. During my free time, I enjoy traveling, calisthenics, soccer, guitar and live music, reading history and science fiction, and keeping in touch with friends. I plan on attending law school in the near future.
I am a Cornell University sophomore studying Mechanical Engineering with a strong background in math, physics, and computer science. I have worked with many middle school and high school students to improve their writing so that they could succeed in high school and college. I have also counseled students on college admissions and edited hundreds of college application essays at the undergraduate and graduate levels (including for medical school). I have written books, professional articles, and podcast episodes over many years. For three years, my college admissions podcast (USACollegeChat) reached thousands of prospective college students and their parents. My specialties are improving grammar, punctuation, and capitalization; writing concise and engaging sentences; building perfect paragraphs; and putting together an essay that is meaningful and persuasive. I love to help others improve their writing and believe that there is no way to do that other than over-the-shoulder working together. Many of my students would tell you that they have never had a teacher/counselor who cared about them more than I did. I am most proud of that!
Hi!My name is Liz and I want to work with you!I enjoy teaching and mentoring. I have worked with undergraduate and high school students extensively over the last several years. I believe learning occurs not when a student first hears the information but when they start using the information. Learning takes reflection and practice enhanced through multi-faceted approaches. My role as a tutor is to provide insight and direction to the learning process. After all, not only have I learned the material once but I have also observed multiple people learn the same material. In addition, through my research experience I have implemented the classroom lessons into real life problems.I enjoy incorporating my research into my teaching/tutoring. I can draw from experiences of commonly misunderstood concepts that cannot be gained from a textbook or other interactive learning modules. Not to say there isn't value in those activities because it allows students to learn/review in their dominant learning style. My role as a tutor is to provide the most useful resources and help students build the right tools to eventually master the subject.I am currently a postdoctoral research fellow at UNC Chapel Hill in the School of Pharmacy. I am developing non viral gene therapy systems for treatment of solid tumors. Before this, I earned my PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. There in addition to research I gained an appreciation of nature. I lived near a waterfall and I have hiked several mountains in the Adirondacks! In undergrad, I studied physics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. I fell in love with the city and physics and math during my 4 years there. I graduated high school from the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science which is a residential public high school in Mississippi and frequently ranked within the top 500 best high schools in the nation.
