Recent Woodcliff Lake Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Rudy in Woodcliff Lake, NJ
The student has a final on pre-calculus coming up next Monday and she wants help preparing for it. We looked over at the review provided by the student. It appears to be a cumulative review covering the basic functions, trig functions, unit circle, graphing, and identities. We focused mainly on graphing trig functions, so we spent most of our time working on that. We went over identifying each part of a sine or cosine equation and worked on translating that to the graph. We ended the session by working on tangent graphs. We will pick back up during the next session and plan to go over the rest of her review packet. The student did great!

Tutoring review by Sarah in Woodcliff Lake, NJ
We went over the student's test from school. It seemed that most of the questions she missed had to do with interpreting data from a graph. This benchmark test was given to see the student's progress in this class, in order to prepare for the actual test at the end of the school year. She mentioned that the teacher does not give much homework, so I think our best course of action is to supplement whatever she is currently learning with extra practice problems from the database. She knew the concepts (such as solving for x) quite well, but had a hard time going through the steps when applying them. I think this can be improve with more practice.

Tutoring review by Brendan in Woodcliff Lake, NJ
We spent the majority of the time on measuring elapsed time. I showed her how to tackle problems and there were noticeable progress toward the end of the hour. The student also had work to complete for school dealing with congruent vs. similar shapes. I showed her enough to allow her to complete the worksheet without assistance.

We worked mostly on graphing trig equations (Sine, cosine, tangent and inverses). The student is picking it up pretty quickly. He continues to have a good attitude. New strategies were just concerning new material, I'm continuing to emphasize places to stop and check work for errors.

Tutoring review by Kewanta in Woodcliff Lake, NJ
Today we reviewed Tuesday's topic on decomposing fractions. We also covered 4.3C -Equivalent Fractions. We looked at fraction bars to determine which fractions were equivalent to one another. We then used multiplication and division to find smaller and larger equivalent fractions. The girls struggled slightly with finding a common factor, multiplication facts, and division. We decided that it is best to continue with this lesson, and to also include multiplication and division facts. The girls were assigned homework.

Today we worked on multiplication and division word problems. The student is very talented at mental math, but needs practice in slowing down and sticking with fundamental math rules. He did a great job!
