I am a recent graduate of Duke Unversity. I received a Bachelor of Arts in both Psychology and International Comparative Studies.I started tutoring informally in high school after experiencing learning difficulties of my own.I continued tutoring throughout undergrad through America Reads America Counts. During my time with the program, I mostly worked with English as a Second Language students. During my time as a tutor, I created specialized learning plans for each student. I made specialized plans based on their style of learning because no two students learn the same way. When not tutoring or studying to get my law degree at New York University, I like to read, play with my sphynx, learn new languages, and bake.

I have always been passionate about tutoring students to help them succeed! I have over five years of tutoring experience in ACT prep, SAT prep, Economics, English, US History, etc.I am currently a senior at Duke University studying Public Policy and Economics. I will be entering the field of management consulting upon graduation.
I recently graduated from Duke University with a degree in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. I excelled in my program with a Biology GPA of 3.77. I am extremely passionate about the material, and enjoy tutoring as a way of keeping Biology in my life. While in school I tutored for a student-run nonprofit called Chance tutoring, In this role I tutored middle and High school students in subjects ranging from statistics to SAT prep. I also taught two Chemistry 101 lab sections. In addition to my teaching experience I scored a 41 on the MCAT as well as a 1440 on the SAT(don't remember my writing score). I tutor MCAT because I understand that studying for the test can often seem like a steep mountain to climb. I understand the importance placed on doing well and how stressful it can be for prospective physicians. I am eager to share my test taking strategies as well as help students to learn and understand the material itself. I'll also be applying for medical school in the near future and am happy to share my experiences with any of my students.
I am a graduate of Duke University, as well as Duquesne University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in political science and German with a focus on international relations and twentieth century totalitarian regimes. I received my Master of Arts in Public Policy Management with a focus on energy policy, particularly unconventional hydrocarbons like shale gas. During my undergraduate studies, I spent 6 months living in Berlin, Germany as part of a full-immersion language acquisition program. Professionally, I spent almost a decade as a small business owner, operating my own financial planning firm. I decided to return for higher education because of a deep interest in energy markets, developed during my career as a financial advisor. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Economics (particularly microeconomics), Political Science, History, and Math. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests like the GRE, I have seen the most success assisting students in understanding the logic of these exams, how they have been constructed, and what the best approach for leveraging that knowledge is. I have a deep commitment to education. Education is necessary not just for establishing employable skills, but more importantly to create an informed population. In my spare time, I enjoy blacksmithing and knifemaking, playing my drums and guitar, listening to a wide array of music, and spending as much time as possible with my family.
As a passionate educator with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Duke University, I have over 5 years of tutoring experience across diverse age groups, from young children to adult learners. My specialties include AP English Language and Composition, Conversational Spanish, and GED preparation, where I focus on tailoring lessons to meet each student's unique learning style and goals. I believe that teaching is a privilege, and I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment. My approach involves using relatable examples and personalized materials, which I find particularly effective for students facing academic challenges. I am excited to help students not only succeed academically but also expand their horizons through language learning and critical thinking.
I am a recent graduate of Duke University, where I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2014. I am primarily a math tutor but I also enjoy teaching chemistry and physics. Math was always my favorite subject in high school and I continued my love of math at Duke. I have also been a middle school and high school tutor throughout my time at Duke through the Program in Education. One of my crowning achievements at Duke was winning the DT Stallings Award, which is awarded to a Duke senior who has shown sustained and dedicated service to tutoring local school children. When I am tutoring a student, I prefer a very hands-on approach. I love working out problems with my students after working through an example problem completely. By working problems out with my students, I am able to help them if and when they get stuck. I hope to convey to every student the ability to think logically and persevere when things seem difficult.Outside of math and tutoring, I am a huge sports fan and novel reader. Since I graduated from Duke, I have a fierce love for all things Blue Devils and I really enjoyed watching Duke Basketball in Cameron Indoor Stadium. One of my favorite things to do is to read a novel while listening to my iPod.
Tutoring was a central fixture of my extracurricular life during high school and college prior to my entering the business world as an entrepreneur. I missed the experience of instructing and mentoring in the years since I last tutored, and out of a desire to recapture the sense of fulfillment that comes with being a teacher, I began privately SAT tutoring in the local area a few months ago and was reminded of how well suited my personality and my intellectual curiosity are to teaching. I always loved taking standardized tests; I thought of the problems as fun puzzles. And I love sharing that outlook and enthusiasm with students who are trying to improve their SAT performance. I find it completely invigorating to see students grasping the concepts that underlie the problems we work through together, and it is so fun to develop a unique relationship with each pupil. There really is such nuance to helping each student overcome his or her unique set of test taking-related challenges, and I think it's a captivating experience each time.
I have been teaching 18- to 22-year-old students at the college level since 1995. I love imparting to them my own passion for the English language and its literary heritage, from Chaucer through our best 21st-century writers. I am particularly absorbed by the history of fiction, drama, and poetry in English, and I hope to continue to teach such love of the written word to curious students today.
Hey, I'm John, and I'm currently a rising junior at Duke University studying Economics and Political Science. I scored a 1570 (800 math, 770 EBRW) on my SAT, and have helped numerous personal friends and family friends improve their SAT scores through personalized tutoring. All of my students have scored above a 1450, and one student I worked with jumped from 1140 to 1550 in three months (a 410-point increase). Whatever your starting point, I focus on finding exactly where you're losing points and building a plan around those specific gaps. Outside of tutoring, I spent last summer as an investment banking summer analyst at Lazard, and I'm an incoming 2027 summer business analyst at McKinsey & Company in New York City.
A professional greatly passionate about learning, education, and teaching. Studied at Duke University and traveled the world! I enjoy helping others learn and achieve their academic goals. I love meeting new people and have a friendly, down-to-earth personality.
Hi! My name is Maggie, and I have been tutoring since high school. I graduated Cum Laude from Duke University in just 3 years, and I graduated with a Distinction Thesis. I have a psychology major and a certificate in Human Development. Since graduation, I have been working in an elementary school as a special education paraprofessional. This job was exciting to me because I was able to focus on the special needs children (ADHD, ASD, Down Syndrome, EBD), but I also got to teach some classes and help the general education students. The job was perfect for me!I recently moved to St. Paul, and I now want to become a full time tutor. What I really love about tutoring is the relationship that is formed between student and tutor. I like to really get to know a student so I can learn how to help him or her best. It is important to me that a student is able to enjoy his or her work. That will make learning more fun, and it will make the student more successful. I am so excited for the opportunity to tutor your child! I look forward to helping him or her achieve and find confidence in abilities and intelligence.
I am an analytically-driven in Duke University's Class of 2023 pursuing degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Economics. I have a thirst for knowledge in mainly the mathematics and sciences, and I thoroughly enjoy conveying my passions through tutoring. My experiences in student-tutoring began in High School where I tutored SAT, Mathematics, and Physics. My favorite subjects to tutor are SAT and ACT Math, Physics, Calculus at all levels, Algebra, and Statistics. One of the many reasons I enjoy tutoring is because I can utilize my effective communication skills to illustrate complex concepts to students in relatable and interesting ways.
I am a doctoral candidate in Clinical Psychology at Duke University. My job requires excellent mathematics, analytic, and writing skills, which are also my favorite subjects to teach. I have experience teaching kids in elementary, middle, and high school, as well as college-aged students. My particular expertise is in managing attention and assisting with executive functioning (e.g., time management and planning).
I love to learn and to help others learn, a pleasure I had for nearly forty years as a college instructor in writing and literature at The College of Wooster in Ohio. Although I taught many classes in these subjects, much of my teaching was done in one-on-one conferences on how to write for a variety of purposes: explanations, arguments, analyses, research, poetry and fiction. I worked with writers from those having basic difficulties to sophisticated seniors working on complex research papers or creative collections of stories and poems. My primary approach is first to try to understand you as a learner, to identify not just problems but also how you work best with a particular style, and to devise a way of learning that fits both you and the form of writing to be developed. Although a writer needs to understand the "rules," such as grammar, the goal is to discover how you can learn to use both the rules and your knowledge and creativity for your own purposes. In literature, my tutoring begins with an emphasis on comprehending the text, identifying patterns and themes, and finally coming to an analysis or interpretation that arises from this understanding and makes sense of as many aspects as possible. Literary interpretation is not a mysterious game, iibut a skill that can be learned and practiced by you with excellent results. In tutoring for tests, such as the GRE or SAT, my approach focuses on understanding the kinds of thinking the tests want to identify, the ways in which the questions try to identify them, and the best strategies for answering the kinds of questions asked. Importantly too, I help the you to recognize your past experiences with these questions--perhaps in other forms--as an important way of easing anxiety about the tests.I am a patient, understanding and experienced tutor, mentor and teacher. My basic belief is that people learn best from encouragement and practice that brings insight, and never from ridicule or harshness. I look forward to working with you to improve your skills in the subjects and goals you want to work on.
I am a freshman at Duke University in the Pratt School of Engineering. I plan on majoring in Civil or Environmental Engineering, as well as Economics. While I am qualified to tutor a range of subjects from math and science to ACT prep, I get the most excited when working on improving a student's writing because it is such a beautiful process. Sparking students' curiosity and excitement is the most rewarding part of tutoring, and I make it my mission to achieve that with all students I work with. In my free time, I am involved in a variety of groups on campus such as the triathlon club, FEMMES (a female-oriented STEM tutoring club), and The Chronicle, which is Duke's student newspaper. I also enjoy reading, running and baking all sorts of delicious delicacies.
I am a graduate of Duke University( undergrad) where I majored in Philosophy and minored in Theater Studies. During my summers in college, I worked with EducationUSA Nairobi, an advising center for Kenyan students who wish to pursue higher education in the US. When I worked for them, I tutored high school graduates on SAT stuff and also helped them write better personal statements. After graduating from Duke last year, I started tutoring high school students in my neighborhood. I mainly taught math subjects such as Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Basic Math and Problem Solving but I'm well versed in Reading and Writing subjects as well. I'm vastly experienced and very patient with all my students. In my free time I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking etc.

Kirsten is a recent graduate of Duke University where she received her Master of Biostatistics, and she has a BS in Mathematics from Wheaton College in Illinois. While earning her master's degree she did research with a professor in statistical genetics, and was able to do internships at QuintilesIMS and the Duke Biostatistics core. During her time at Wheaton College, she was a TA for semesters in mathematics, and collaborated with faculty on a research project in computational epidemiology and was acknowledged in the published article, The Schedule Effect, which looked at how school scheduling can impact infection rates. Although Biostatistics is her passion, Kirsten has been heavily involved in tutoring students in mathematics and statistics. It is fulfilling for her to watch a students face as they understand a mathematical concept for the first time. In her free time, Kirsten enjoys playing basketball, hiking with friends, playing saxophone, and baking.
My teaching philosophy is centered on making learning personalized, engaging, and confidence-building. I believe every student learns differently, so I adapt my approach to their individual needs while encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and independent problem-solving. I graduated from Duke University with a degree in Cultural Anthropology and obtaining a Master's of International Affairs at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs.

I specialize in the following: GRE quantitative, high school math, high school computer science, and college computer science.
I went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for college and studied biochemistry. I was interested in the fusion of chemistry and biology because I was lucky enough to have two incredible high school teachers in those subjects. I wanted to understand how cells talk to one another or take on unique identities within the body. These questions led me to study cell biology at Duke University where I earned a Masters in 2017. My experiences in grad school have caused me to value the clear communication of science, a skill I'm always trying to work on.I've left lab, for the time being, to focus on my other passion, rowing. I train full time with the US National Team and love being an elite athlete. I began rowing in college after I grew up swimming and playing other sports. I still love finding science in the real world and explaining it to my teammates or anyone else who will listen.

Outside of academics, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, running, reading, volunteering, and traveling. Education has had a tremendous impact on my life, and I look forward to helping students achieve their goals.
I recently graduated from Duke University with a BA in Public Policy. I am in New York City studying acting, and I want to bring the same energy, enthusiasm and compassion that is required on stage to my students. I have experience tutoring for the SATs, and I have had significant experience serving as a mentor to younger students, particularly in the university setting. I love coaching and helping students discover their intellectual passions. Most importantly, I am thrilled by the prospect of helping a student set concrete goals and progress towards actualizing them in an academic realm. But above all I want to work with students to help them develop strategies that are personally effective and furthermore that link their passions with their education.

I'm a recent college graduate (and future medical student) who's excited to meet you and help you reach your learning goals.I first became interested in tutoring when I struggled my freshman year at Duke University. Previously unchallenged, I had to work hard to teach myself difficult topics and relied heavily on the free tutoring available at my school to make it through. After that year, I worked in South Carolina at a nonprofit where I designed and taught curriculum for kids ages 5-18 years old and learned a lot about what it takes to be a teacher/tutor. I built and evaluated Reading and Math curricula and helped students develop confidence in a range of subjects from Math to Writing composition.I loved the experience and returned to Duke, where as soon as I finished my science requirements, I applied to be a peer tutor. Hello! I recently graduated this past May from Stetson University down in DeLand, FL with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in Nonprofit Administration, along with a minor in Music. I grew up in Winter Springs, FL, and graduated from Winter Springs High School as the Valedictorian of my class in 2011. I have been tutoring math since my sophomore year of high school, and during my time at Stetson University, I worked as a student tutor for the Mathematics Department for three years, tutoring calculus, probability, statistics, and finite mathematics. I also tutored independently, tutoring middle school and high school students in Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus. I love numbers, and want you to as well!Beyond my background in math, I have several other interests as well. I have been a musician since the sixth grade when I first started playing the tuba. I have a passion for volunteering and nonprofit organizations, and have spent much time with one nonprofit in particular, Habitat for Humanity, both in the office setting and on build sites as well. I enjoy biking and running, as well as spending time in the mountains. My friends would describe me as friendly and goofy, as I never give up the opportunity to reference random Youtube videos in every day conversations, and revel in making others laugh. I love tutoring, and enjoy helping students accomplish their goals.I am now attending Duke University to pursue a Master of Public Policy, a track studying the quantitative analysis behind policy decisions. I am a rising senior at Duke University. I major in Computer Science and am also getting a minor in Physics. I have had experience tutoring/teaching as a teaching assistant for three classes: Intro to Databases, Electricity and Magnetism (for engineers), and Computer Network Architecture. I have had industry experience in software development as an intern for IBM and a cybersecurity analyst for TIAA. Outside of school/work, I play the piano and train with the Duke Taekwondo Club. I have a strong background in computer science, physics, and math, but I love learning about and helping students with a wide variety of subjects!
I started tutoring fellow students when I was in high school. When I got to Duke, I had the opportunity to tutor at a local middle school. I have tutored a variety of subjects, but my favorite subject to tutor is math because of how much I enjoy it. I think that a tutor's enjoyment for a subject can directly impact how the student feels about it. If I can help a student become less frustrated with a subjects concepts, learn how to stay organized and keep up with their work, I know I have done my job well. I personally love to learn and even after having graduated, I am constantly looking for opportunities to learn new things. Additionally, in my spare time I enjoy reading, board games, and rock climbing. I am excited to work as a tutor once again in order to give students a chance to learn one-on-one to get a deeper and more clear understanding of their study material. By having the ability to clear up confusion with material every week via a tutor, the student will find it easier in the future to build on these concepts and to keep up with work as it gets more challenging.
PhD Mathematics. Undergrads in Physics and Maths. Duke University and NYU alumni.
I love teaching. I have been a tutor in various subjects since my freshman year of high school when I tutored students in Pre-Calculus. Since then, I have always been a math tutor and have continued to tutor in other subjects as well, including Spanish and U.S. history as well as tests such as the SAT and ACT. I have also tutored students from ages 5-17.My teaching philosophy entails a lot of practice and self-discovery. From my own experiences with challenging subjects, I know that going the extra mile by doing more practice problems than are actually assigned or watching videos on certain concepts helps reinforcement and allows students to thrive in the classroom. As a tutor, I like to guide students in the correct direction and help them gain footing when learning a new subject; however, I also like to give students independence so they can determine their best method for learning.
As much as I see myself as a qualified, knowledgeable tutor, I think it's just as important for me to motivate, lead, inspire, and mentor my students. Do you have test anxiety? Math anxiety, specifically? Is it difficult for you to create, organize, and execute a study plan? Or do you simply want straightforward, content-based prep and study help? In either case, I'm excited to help you achieve your academic and standardized test goals. My academic credentials consist of a BA in Political Science and German from the University of Rhode Island, and a Master's degree in Environmental Management from Duke University. I speak German and Spanish. I'm confident tutoring several standardized tests, including SSAT, ISEE, SAT, ACT, and GRE.
The very first student whom I tutored received a perfect score on the ACT. That is why I have continued tutoring for the past seven years. Throughout the course of my tutoring, I have had the pleasure of working with a wide variety of students from kindergarten to graduate school.
I am earning dual Bachelors of Science from Duke University and Duke Kunshan University (located in Kunshan, Jiangsu, China) in Behavioral Science-- intended to graduate in 2023. As a former Varsity Tutors student myself, I can confidently say that our services not only allow students to be proud of what they can achieve (for myself it was an SAT score and college admissions essays) but also who they are. Tutoring had a huge impact on my confidence in the classroom and other academic settings (i.e. testing, presentations, etc.) My greatest wish is to pay it forward.I am a passionate learner of developmental and abnormal psychology, with aspirations to become a clinical child psychologist in the future. I have years of volunteer and work experience as a camp counselor, lifeguard, science fair leader, babysitter, tutor, seminar leader, and child caretaker. I love to aid in the process of learning, my approach always being patient and enthusiastic.
