Hi! I am a second-year student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine after earning my bachelor's degree in Biology from Duke University. In high school, I tutored peers in math and science, and in college, I taught STEM subjects to elementary students through an after-school program. I also have experience reviewing and editing college application essays for friends and family. I am most qualified to tutor Algebra, Geometry, Biology, General Chemistry, Psychology, English/Grammar, Writing, and standardized tests such as the SAT and DAT. My goal is to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, building confidence, and strengthening their understanding of challenging material. Outside of academics, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, running, reading, volunteering, and traveling. Education has had a tremendous impact on my life, and I look forward to helping students achieve their goals.
I graduated from Princeton University in May 2015 with my Bachelor's in Biology. In May 2016, I graduated from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University with a Masters in management Studies. My education background is extremely diverse and promotes strong critical thinking and problem solving skills in various contexts.I began tutoring while a student at Princeton University. There, I tutored underclassmen while on campus as well as high school and middle school students from my hometown. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring individuals of all ages.At Princeton, I took two math courses, four Spanish courses, and a variety of science courses. My Masters degree program was all-encompassing and included courses on accounting, financial analysis, and corporate strategy.
When I began college, I remember struggling with tests and with time management. Being a premedical student from the very beginning meant that I was forced to learn very quickly how to overcome these challenges. My attempts to become a successful student were filled with perseverance, which became the theme of my professional endeavors. After working extremely hard to be accepted into my top choice medical school at Duke University, I again found myself in a situation where I felt under prepared and lost. Through much work and research about study skills, proper test preparation, and test taking strategies, I eventually have reached a level where I am comfortable assessing my own test readiness and how to best strengthen my academic weaknesses. I believe that through my own personal experiences, I have become a stronger life-long learner and I plan to use these skills throughout my career as I plan to stay in academic medicine to further the field of medical education.
I am currently a student at Duke University who is eager to learn and help others. I am dedicated to helping students not only achieve their academic goals but also develop a genuine interest in learning.
I find my success in helping others to succeed and reach their goals. My main objective as a tutor is to empower my students and guide them toward their own success by instilling confidence in them. I understand that every student has their own learning style as well as unique passions, strengths and interests. I aim to get to know my students individual strengths and passions in order to make the material interesting and meaningful for them. I believe in an individual's creativity and I create individualized and personal lessons based on what kind of learner a student is. I believe that education is power and that the best way to empower someone is to teach them.I grew up in Long Island, New York and graduated high school with an IB Diploma in 2010. After high school, I headed down south to North Carolina where I studied at Duke University. I created my own interdisciplinary major and graduated in May 2014. During my time in college, I was lucky to spend a semester studying in South Africa at the University of Cape Town and return to the country the next summer to conduct independent research. After graduating from Duke, I accepted an international teaching position with WorldTeach. I was very grateful for the experience to live on the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia for a year and teach reading and writing to high school juniors and seniors. Although my formal experience is working with high school aged students, I have background experience working with younger students, as well. I have experience teaching reading and literature, essay, creative and persuasive writing as well as public speaking. I am also experienced in teaching test preparation and test-taking strategies, resume and personal statement preparation, and leadership. Further, I am an experienced researcher and editor. I am an avid reader and a skilled writer. I aspire to help my students feel confident and positive about their education and future.
I am an analytically-driven in Duke University's Class of 2023 pursuing degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Economics. I have a thirst for knowledge in mainly the mathematics and sciences, and I thoroughly enjoy conveying my passions through tutoring. My experiences in student-tutoring began in High School where I tutored SAT, Mathematics, and Physics. My favorite subjects to tutor are SAT and ACT Math, Physics, Calculus at all levels, Algebra, and Statistics. One of the many reasons I enjoy tutoring is because I can utilize my effective communication skills to illustrate complex concepts to students in relatable and interesting ways.
I am a Duke alum currently working toward a Master of Science in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. As a pre-med student who majored in African and African American Studies, I have experience navigating a variety of disciplines. I also have experience tutoring in a number of subject areas, and have worked with diverse sets of students who have varied in age, grade level, and coursework. I began tutoring almost seven years ago working with disadvantaged students on mathematics. Since then, I have constructed curriculum for a program for middle school girls, and spent a semester training in preparation to be writing tutor at Duke’s writing center which serves graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines. I have a love for learning, and an appreciation for the richness that a interdisciplinary education provides. Helping others better understand their course materials, and, in turn, themselves as life-long learners, is a truly enriching experience.
I am a graduate student in the Masters of Interdisciplinary Data Science Program at Duke University. Previously, I worked at Student Support Services in Puerto Rico as a Data Analyst, and, prior to that position, I worked as a Math and English tutor. Throughout my life, I have tutored college kids from less privileged backgrounds, who carry different types of academic and personal struggles, and I empathized a lot with them. I know the feeling of walking in to a classroom and understanding nothing, the void that forms in your head. My goal is for people to understand and learn. Once you learn a concept, nothing can break your foundations.

Hi! My name is Nima, and I am a rising college sophomore who will be attending Duke University on a full merit scholarship in the fall. I love to run cross country and play the viola, as well as tutoring students in a whole variety of subjects! Feel free to message me!
I went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for college and studied biochemistry. I was interested in the fusion of chemistry and biology because I was lucky enough to have two incredible high school teachers in those subjects. I wanted to understand how cells talk to one another or take on unique identities within the body. These questions led me to study cell biology at Duke University where I earned a Masters in 2017. My experiences in grad school have caused me to value the clear communication of science, a skill I'm always trying to work on.I've left lab, for the time being, to focus on my other passion, rowing. I train full time with the US National Team and love being an elite athlete. I began rowing in college after I grew up swimming and playing other sports. I still love finding science in the real world and explaining it to my teammates or anyone else who will listen.
I am from Munster, IN, and I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at Duke University. During my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, watching basketball, and reading about basketball. You can also catch me trying to stay musically inclined, solving a Rubik's Cube, or playing board games. I am passionate about service in various forms, and I wish to pursue a career in medicine in the future. Throughout my academic years, I have engaged myself in varying instructional opportunities, from teaching younger students how to play the harmonium to guiding my peers through various academic subjects. My own academic challenges motivate me to be the most effective tutor I can be and help me guide my students through potential pitfalls along their academic journeys. I strive to create an environment where healthy interaction and communication are fostered, as I believe these are the crucial to the student experience. I tutor AP Psychology, MCAT Physical Sciences, MCAT Biological Sciences, and MCAT Social and Behavioral Sciences. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require assistance with any of these subjects.
As a graduate of Duke University with a B.S. in Biology, I knew I wanted to pursue academia. I continued my studies with a M.S. in Marine Biology at Nova Southeastern University, where I solidified my passion for research and teaching others. Now I'm hoping to help my students get as excited about learning as I always have been! My most recent teaching experience has been with a local marine biology summer camp, where I do my best to get the kids stoked about biology, ecology, environmental science, and conservation. While I feel most passionate about marine biology, I am also qualified to tutor a variety of different subjects. I have taken the SAT 11 different times, and feel very confident teaching standardized test subjects! For me, tutoring is about breaking down difficult subjects into bite-sized pieces for my students to understand. My motto is "baby steps," and I love finding new and personalized ways to make learning fun for my students. Outside of academia I can be found exercising, singing, playing the ukulele, lounging on the beach, or finding new and exciting ways to annoy my cat Mozart.
My B.A. is from Duke University and I completed all non-dissertation requirements for the Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, which was then the 7th-ranked Economics Ph.D. Program in the U.S. I also taught macro- and micro-economics at La Salle and Drexel Universities. I was rated highly by the students. In fact, for a particular spring semester at La Salle, 25 students petitioned the university to open another section of my microeconomics course, as my sections were filled to capacity. As a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, I tutored undergrads and Wharton MBA students in their macro- and micro-economics courses. I bring to the table over 40 years of experience as an economist with the U.S. government, academia, and the private sector (including with a large multinational Canadian bank) in a wide variety of areas, including international trade, macroeconomics, industry issues, and an immigration program. Given my interest in teaching, I continued to train many others in my positions with the U.S. government, including 70 colleagues in my last position. I very much enjoy teaching and tutoring and seeing and helping others learn, grow, and develop. I realize that a good tutor/teacher is one who not only understands the subject, but can communicate it effectively, as well. My priority/goal is to help the student learn, and there are no "dumb" questions. (Anything is askable.) I also work to make it a pleasant, personable experience.
I have taught high school mathematics for the past 7 years and have loved every minute of it. Throughout those seven years I earned my second Masters in Math Education and began pursuing my PhD in the field. I have had the pleasure of being nominated as a honor teacher five times by the top ten students during various years. I am a teacher leader in my community and I enjoy sharing the wealth of knowledge.
I have been tutoring Spanish for over 15 years, from Beginner through Advanced, including AP and college-level. I am patient, reliable, and good at simplifying and explaining complex ideas. I love teaching and helping people to learn. I graduated with a degree in Spanish from Duke University and also hold a master's in International Relations from NYU.
I am a Computer Science major at Duke University passionate about encouraging others who are learning CS so that they may come to understand the powerful, real-world impact that programming can have. As someone who has a strong background in tutoring, including, but not limited to, the chemistry tutoring club I co-founded in high school and my current involvement in the Duke Music Tutors organization, I am confident in my ability to tutor in a way that is focused, individualized, and memorable.
I'm passionate about education and deeply committed to providing the highest levels of teaching excellence. A bit on my background: I am a Duke University graduate and recently completed my Masters in Advanced Math Education under the auspices of the NYC Teaching Fellows program. Ihave experience teaching various levels of math and understand how to convey concepts in practical and clear ways so students gain a real understanding of the material. My particular specialty is Math. My style of teaching--and my passion for the subject-- resulted in high test scores and the gratification of a lot of students.A passion for math is a contagious thing. My students learn not because they have to learn, but because they want to learn -- a huge difference.
I am a graduate of Dartmouth College where I majored in History. I also received my M.Ed. from Boston College so that I could become a middle school and high school social studies teacher. Currently, I am working concurrently on my JD (at Duke University) and my Ph.D. in Education (at Boston College) and hope to one day combine the two degrees by working in policy. I have tutored or been in the education field my entire life and love it when I am able to help a scholar learn something new. I love to tutor a broad range of subjects but primarily focus on History and English. I particularly love working with scholars on their college essays and finding ways to get their unique voice and experience into writing. Education is crucial and it is important to work with scholars so that they realize the vast amount of knowledge there is in the world. In my free time, I love putting together puzzles, playing Xbox, or cheering on the Dallas Cowboys!
My tutoring career formally began six years ago--since then, I have been gradually developing my own personalized collection of tips and tools for effective learning in a large range of disciplines. My journey began in high school as a tutor for a handful of middle school students struggling with mathematics. The private sessions instilled within me an appreciation for the power of conceptual connections. I found that each individual student's network of knowledge was vastly different, and so the connections they drew in order to arrive at solutions differed as well. It became my goal and pleasure to guide these students along their own intellectual pathways towards a better understanding.During my undergraduate career at the University of Texas at Dallas, I continued to fortify this skill. Employed by the on-campus Student Success Center as both a Peer Tutor and Supplemental Instruction Leader, I led sessions for advanced engineering mathematics, statics and dynamics, mechanics of materials, physics, and calculus. Through these programs, I was introduced to new methods for helping students attain their own understanding of course materials with only minimal guidance from myself. These methods relied upon the fact that, oftentimes, students already possess the foundational knowledge to arrive at correct conclusions--they simply lack the confidence and/or the roadmaps to get there. That's where I come in.After finishing my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering last May, I moved back to the Raleigh-Durham area to continue my education at Duke University for an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. As aforementioned, much of my tutoring experience has been in STEM fields (calculus, physics, chemistry, etc.)--but as a student who has prepared for, agonized over, and ultimately suffered through the SAT and GRE standardized tests, I would love to be able to impart my own knowledge and strategies for these as well.If it's nice out and I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I'm a recent college graduate (and future medical student) who's excited to meet you and help you reach your learning goals.I first became interested in tutoring when I struggled my freshman year at Duke University. Previously unchallenged, I had to work hard to teach myself difficult topics and relied heavily on the free tutoring available at my school to make it through. After that year, I worked in South Carolina at a nonprofit where I designed and taught curriculum for kids ages 5-18 years old and learned a lot about what it takes to be a teacher/tutor. I built and evaluated Reading and Math curricula and helped students develop confidence in a range of subjects from Math to Writing composition.I loved the experience and returned to Duke, where as soon as I finished my science requirements, I applied to be a peer tutor. From there, I gained three years of experience tutoring Organic Chemistry, Physics, and other science topics and proofreading others' essays on the side.I love building others' confidence and helping people master subjects that have given them trouble. I've been there, and I know that having a good tutor to guide you through can make a world of difference.
I am a sophomore at Duke University studying computer science and physics. Academically, I am drawn towards disciplines that employ logical problem-solving. I enjoy working with others to discover new intuitive ways of understanding problems.
I am a graduate of Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with minors in Education and Documentary Studies. Before I went to college, I spent a lot of time in an elementary school classroom volunteering, especially in the summers, and that was when I realized I love tutoring. I spent all four years of college tutoring local students in the area in math, reading, and government. I am in the process of applying to law school, so I have experience in the admissions on process for both college and graduate school. In my spare time, I enjoy fashion, photography, reading, and yoga.
I am a graduate of Duke University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Cultural Theory. I am currently completing my PhD in English Literature at the University of Virginia. My dissertation focuses on 20th Century U.S. Fiction, but I also have a strong interest in African-American literature, film studies, popular culture, and gender theory. At UVa, I have taught literature courses as well as first-year writing seminars, which have focused on topics including the American Dream, Gender and Sexuality, and Borders and Frontiers. My favorite things about teaching writing are working individually with students to help them brainstorm ideas and articulate their point of view in their clearest, strongest voice, and seeing their work become stronger across each draft they revise. When working with students in my literature classes at UVa and the North Carolina Governor's School, I especially enjoy helping students develop strategies for careful, critical reading. My years of teaching and tutoring have led me to the firm belief that literary analysis and clear writing are not mysterious talents that you either have or you don'tinstead, I believe anyone can become a better interpreter of literature and a better writer with practice and encouragement. In my free time, I enjoy walking my dog, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, going to art museums, and catching up on "Game of Thrones" or "Project Runway."
I am a rising sophomore at Duke University and am double majoring in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science with a minor in Economics. I love problem solving and analyzing situations creatively and enjoy studying the real-world applications that accompany engineering. I mostly tutor math and science courses and hope to illustrate my passion for these subjects to my students.
Hi! My name is Michelle, and I am an incoming CSE PhD student at the University of Michigan. I graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in Computer Science and Sociology in May 2025. I am passionate about making meaningful connections with students and helping others understand high-level concepts!
I am a student at Duke University studying English, Entrepreneurship, and Photography. I have several years of experience tutoring privately and volunteering as an assistant teacher for elementary school children aged 4-10 years old. I am available to tutor English at all pre-collegiate levels. This may include anything from learning letters to improving in-depth writing and analysis skills. I am also available to tutor Mathematics at an elementary school level. Outside of school, I spend my time reading, running my photography business, hanging out with my dog, and babysitting.
I primarily tutor students preparing for the Reading and Writing portion of the SAT, but I also have a background and experience in biology, law, technology, and creative writing. I got my bachelor's degree from Duke University and I have a JD from Boston College. I chose to focus on the SAT as I know how stressful standardized tests can be, especially as they're a factor in the high-stakes world of college admissions. Regardless of the subject, I adjust my tutoring approach to a student's individual personality and needs - just because a test may be standardized does not mean I use a "one-size-fits-all" approach to helping students! Outside of academia, I enjoy travel (I've been to 34 states and seven countries), fitness, cooking, gaming, EDM, and watching sports.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Duke University. I received my Bachelor's degree in History and my Master's degree in Religious Studies. Since graduation I have tutored students in American History and Biblical Hebrew, which were exceedingly rewarding experiences. I am especially passionate in helping students learn to think critically, and enjoy the process of learning. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I am most enthusiastic about tutoring in History and Writing because these subjects utilize skills that students will use and cultivate throughout their lives and are applicable for many careers. I would describe my teaching philosophy as hands on and project-based learning. I strive to include fun and relevant videos, songs, and activities into my curriculum to ensure the engagement of my students. Outside of academia I like painting, baking, hiking, photography, and having game nights with friends.
I am a graduate of Duke University with a degree in Health Policy and Education Policy. While at Duke University I was a student athlete, participated in the leadership of several clubs and service groups; as well as, working as a Math and Reading tutor. After graduation I spent a year pursing a business venture allotted to me through the Elevator Pitch Competition, my senior year of college, which I won in my category - Non-Profits. After that year, I joined the Teach for America Fellowship, where I fell in love with teaching. The Teach for America Fellowship is 2 years; however, after my first year due to the recognition and growth in my classroom I was invited to start a school. I spent 2 years at that school prior to getting married and moving to California, a few months ago, with my amazing, aerospace loving, husband.Moving out here I knew I didn't want to go back into the classroom, but I wanted to find ways to support teachers and students, as they work toward reaching their goals. I decided to jump back into tutoring. Tutoring allows me to work with students whose needs aren't being met fully in the classroom and the supplement the handwork that each teacher puts into the education plans of their students. I have been tutoring all types of students from Special Needs to Gifted for 9 years. I have a ton of strategies for a variety of subjects and have seen my students grow leaps and bounds in confidence, skill, and ability.I love the challenge of uncovering a child's weaknesses, creating the opportunity for them to discover what they are capable of, and the excitement of seeing their faces light up once they realize, they can do it. Nothing brings me more joy then seeing children walk in the fullness of their potential.
Through my experiences working with students of all ages, I developed a personalized approach for each individual. Students benefit the most when they hone skills both for the assignment at hand, and for long term success in efficient studying and improved reasoning. I have two years of experience as a full time professional in education, as a middle school teacher and a coordinator for an afterschool program. I tutored students throughout high school and college, in volunteer and private settings. I am a graduate of Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American History. I recently received my Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and began my career as an attorney. I am passionate about continuing my work in education through tutoring. I enjoy tutoring many subjects, particularly History, SAT Reading and Writing, College Essays, and Spanish. I love assisting students in implementing simple but effective changes in their preparation for Standardized Tests that show immediate results. I find this motivates students to continue through struggles in their educational pursuits. When I am not working, I enjoy yoga, running, cooking, traveling and playing the cello.
I am a graduate of Duke University where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and French Language, and a Certificate in Journalism and Media Studies. After graduation I moved to New York City to pursue a career in the television and news industry. I grew up volunteering in the public school systems, and have worked with kids of all ages. Before joining Varsity Tutors, I began tutoring middle and high-school level Math, French and English to students throughout the city, and while I am comfortable tutoring in a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about these three. I believe organization and proper study skills are essential for learning, and I enjoy building a trusting relationship with my students to make education fun and productive. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading fiction novels, going to spin class, and trying to cook the perfect fried egg.
