I am a graduate of Duke University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Cultural Theory. I am currently completing my PhD in English Literature at the University of Virginia. My dissertation focuses on 20th Century U.S. Fiction, but I also have a strong interest in African-American literature, film studies, popular culture, and gender theory. At UVa, I have taught literature courses as well as first-year writing seminars, which have focused on topics including the American Dream, Gender and Sexuality, and Borders and Frontiers. My favorite things about teaching writing are working individually with students to help them brainstorm ideas and articulate their point of view in their clearest, strongest voice, and seeing their work become stronger across each draft they revise. When working with students in my literature classes at UVa and the North Carolina Governor's School, I especially enjoy helping students develop strategies for careful, critical reading. My years of teaching and tutoring have led me to the firm belief that literary analysis and clear writing are not mysterious talents that you either have or you don'tinstead, I believe anyone can become a better interpreter of literature and a better writer with practice and encouragement. In my free time, I enjoy walking my dog, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, going to art museums, and catching up on "Game of Thrones" or "Project Runway."

I have tutored students for the GMAT, GRE, SAT, ACT and LSAT for more than 15 years. I love it! As I tailor my instructions toward the unique needs of each student, my goal is to improve not only the student's performance but also the student's confidence as test day approaches.
Tutoring was a central fixture of my extracurricular life during high school and college prior to my entering the business world as an entrepreneur. I missed the experience of instructing and mentoring in the years since I last tutored, and out of a desire to recapture the sense of fulfillment that comes with being a teacher, I began privately SAT tutoring in the local area a few months ago and was reminded of how well suited my personality and my intellectual curiosity are to teaching. I always loved taking standardized tests; I thought of the problems as fun puzzles. And I love sharing that outlook and enthusiasm with students who are trying to improve their SAT performance. I find it completely invigorating to see students grasping the concepts that underlie the problems we work through together, and it is so fun to develop a unique relationship with each pupil. There really is such nuance to helping each student overcome his or her unique set of test taking-related challenges, and I think it's a captivating experience each time.
An appreciation of education is a prerequisite for any great tutor, and I believe that I have this appreciation. As a student at Duke University, I recognize that it is my teachers and tutors who played vital roles in my academic achievement. I would love to have the opportunity to help other students the same way my teachers and tutors did for me.One of my strengths that contributes to my success as a tutor is my ability to work with all kinds of people. Growing up in Portland, Oregon and going to college in Durham, North Carolina, I have not only been exposed to a diversity of people, but I have also had the chance to work as part of a team in many different settings. From helping my peers with problem sets in my biochemistry class to conducting spelling and geography bees as a volunteer with the North South Foundation, I have had many opportunities to work with others in an academic setting.Perhaps it is these previous experiences that most significantly contribute to my ability to be an effective tutor. I currently volunteer as a tutor with America Reads & Counts in Durham (ARAC), and through this program, I work with students in the Durham community to help them get the most out of their education. I usually help my students with their homework, and my experience as a tutor with ARAC has taught me valuable lessons about communication and empathy that I believe have shaped my ability to be a successful tutor.
I am a 2021 graduate from Duke University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with Distinction. At Duke, I also minored in Global Health and Chemistry and was a recipient of the Benjamin N. Duke full-ride scholarship based on leadership, service, and academics. I will be attending Yale Medical School as a member of the entering class of 2022. Having recently navigated the medical school application process with many interviews and acceptances, I have begun helping others with their essay writing and application prep. I come from a large Caribbean family and I love learning about other cultures while sharing my own. I enjoy teaching and have worked with everyone from Kindergarteners to middle and high school students to college students and even older adults! My primary teaching experience and interests are all elementary and middle school subjects, biology (through college level), beginner Spanish, essay writing, and test prep/study skills. I have also been an art educator for K-10 and adults!
I graduated this Spring from Duke University and I'm in the process of applying to Master's programs for marine biology. I've been a motivated and committed student for the past 15+ years and I'm excited to bring my knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion for learning and teaching to all of my tutoring sessions. Although I majored in Biology at Duke, I got a minor in Classical Studies - or ancient Greece and Rome - so I have a pretty diverse educational background. In addition to my studies in college, I was DUMB (a proud member of the Duke University Marching Band) and I conducted research on Hawaiian monk seals. In the future, I hope to participate in more field work with marine mammals and eventually become a professor, so I look forward to incorporating tutoring into my educational track!
I would like to begin our work together going over homework problems that cause you difficulty. Togetherwe will determine your level of understanding and then build on that, uncovering any innate-but-hiddenknowledge and skills that you have. In my time as a tenured Associate Professor at Stetson University, Iwas available during 6 weekly office hours, and often more than that when necessary (I never turned astudent away). As a graduate student at Columbia University, my tutoring most often involved pre-medicalstudents who wanted to deepen and polish their chemistry skills. I love this type of one-on-one work withpre-health students because Organic Chemistry is typically the most difficult of the four pre-healthcourses; I count it as an honor to instruct future professional chemists, doctors, veterinarians, physicianassociates, and the like, and to prepare them for an intense exposure to biochemistry and other coursesin their respective professional schools. This is not to say that I only enjoy working with pre-healthstudents; I am happy to work with anyone who needs special help in organic chemistry.
I'm a passionate explorer, educator, and scientist. I am a Planetary Science Researcher (PhD, 2008). I write grants to NASA to use spacecraft data to study the composition and evolution of rocky planetary bodies (Moon, Mercury, asteroids). My research is broad and interdisciplinary that equips me to tutor many subjects and also to show students connections between subjects when it improves subject mastery. I have been teaching and tutoring for over twenty years, at every level of my education and career. In high school I taught aerospace education and aviation search and rescue while I earned my pilot's license. As an undergraduate at Duke I tutored athletes in Geology, Calculus, and Electrical Engineering core courses and I was a teaching assistant for Computer Science and Linear Circuits Laboratory. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant in geology. And as a professor, I've taught undergraduate and graduate science courses at a major U.S. research university. Most recently I designed a combined English and Engineering elective to students with limited English Proficiency at a small university in Colombia. In addition to my academic and career experience I spent four years traveling and living abroad. I supported my travels by working part-time, remotely, on my NASA-funded research projects. At the same time I encountered so many new challenges in both language and culture that I am even better equipped to identify diversity in my students' cultures, backgrounds, and motivations. This has made me a better teacher because being immersed in unfamiliar and confusing situations honed my observational skills and intuition. Constant struggles to make myself understood in my mediocre Spanish or to reword a concept for a confused non-native English speaker have expanded my creativity in the range of ways to explain things that I never thought possible.I believe that encouraging a student's natural curiosity is key to successful learning. I prefer to relate learning material to real world applications (particularly outer space) and the interests of the student. I am particularly passionate about making science and math accessible to humanities or social science students and I pride myself on being able to demonstrate the importance of the subject I am tutoring to many areas of academics and civic life. The most important strategy I employ in tutoring is making it a positive experience. That means working with the student to get them on board *wanting* to learn the material for themselves, independent of requirements. One of my favorite ways to do this is to explore the student's passions and interests and then relate the material they need to learn to something they love. In other cases, a positive experience requires eliminating frustration and/or fear of failure. I've always been a successful student, but my efforts to learn Spanish, outside the classroom, because I needed it to survive, are still the most challenging of my life. I can empathize with students who say they "just aren't a math person" and work to dissuade them of that self-concept.I am a strong advocate of active learning (coming around to this slowly while tutoring students with limited English proficiency and seeing, first-hand, active learning activities overcome communication barriers). But I personally learn best by lecture, practice problems, and explaining to others. Thus I communicate with the student to determine their preferred style of tutoring but I'm also aware that students aren't always the most self-aware and I use my observation skills to consider other approaches that may be helpful.
I graduated from Duke with double majors in Biology and Spanish and a minor in Chemistry. I have extensive experience working with children of all ages, in both childcare and tutoring. In high school, I launched a book club in a local elementary school, where I helped tutor elementary school students in reading comprehension. I also tutored a middle school student in Spanish and helped improve his knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. Since coming to college, I've continued to help elementary school students with reading, writing, and math.
I am a rising senior at Duke University. I major in Computer Science and am also getting a minor in Physics. I have had experience tutoring/teaching as a teaching assistant for three classes: Intro to Databases, Electricity and Magnetism (for engineers), and Computer Network Architecture. I have had industry experience in software development as an intern for IBM and a cybersecurity analyst for TIAA. Outside of school/work, I play the piano and train with the Duke Taekwondo Club. I have a strong background in computer science, physics, and math, but I love learning about and helping students with a wide variety of subjects!
I am a rising sophomore at Duke University and am double majoring in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science with a minor in Economics. I love problem solving and analyzing situations creatively and enjoy studying the real-world applications that accompany engineering. I mostly tutor math and science courses and hope to illustrate my passion for these subjects to my students.
I'm passionate about education and deeply committed to providing the highest levels of teaching excellence. A bit on my background: I am a Duke University graduate and recently completed my Masters in Advanced Math Education under the auspices of the NYC Teaching Fellows program. Ihave experience teaching various levels of math and understand how to convey concepts in practical and clear ways so students gain a real understanding of the material. My particular specialty is Math. My style of teaching--and my passion for the subject-- resulted in high test scores and the gratification of a lot of students.A passion for math is a contagious thing. My students learn not because they have to learn, but because they want to learn -- a huge difference.
