Today, the student and I worked on geometry skills by using Tangrams. We reviewed the names of various shapes and talked about their characteristics. We also reviewed different types of triangles. We combined and subdivided various shapes to make new shapes using the tangram pieces. We also practiced how to set up his scrap paper for a standardized test. We examined some sample problems, and focused on how to show our thinking for each problem. We reviewed several questions and discussed how to break down the question into various parts so that he can develop a strategy for solving the problem.

We covered congruence in triangles in great detail, using SSS, SAS, ASA, and AAS to establish whether or not two triangles were congruent. We also covered classification of triangles into categories based on side length: equilateral, isosceles, or scalene as well as angle measures: obtuse, right and acute. We did quite a few practice problems with some bringing in algebra along with these concepts to solve for x given two congruent triangles. Overall we worked through quite a few problems and the student seemed pretty confident in being prepared for the exam.
