It can be a big scary Math world out there! All those variables and vertices...and some numbers are even imaginary. My goal has always been to demystify Math and while some may never love it - you can at least understand it. My goal has always been to not only show "How" to tackle a problem - but "Why" you are doing what you do and unlock personal understanding. 20 years experience in teaching and tutoring - from pre-algebra to pre-calculus (with the picture puzzle that is Geometry thrown in) and all those tricky trap SAT problems, I have seen it all and learned one thing - understanding what to do rather than just doing the steps helps a student learn Math for themselves. Learning for one's self is the key to personal growth...and those all important better grades.

I received my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Arts in Art and Art History from Lafayette College in 2006. Following graduation, I worked as a Civil Engineer based in Philadelphia, PA and was certified as a Professional Engineer in 2011. After five years in the work force, I returned to graduate school to complete my Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. I now work as a Landscape Designer in Philadelphia and am currently applying for licensure as a Professional Landscape Architect. I also teach as an adjunct professor at Philadelphia University in the Landscape Architecture program. Through Varsity Tutors, I tutor many subjects related to engineering, math, science, art, ecology, and the environment. I love to work with students on strategies to learn math and geometry, particularly focusing on strategies that involve physical and visual learning. I am an active and hardworking individual who loves working with others to solve problems, which directly translates in my approach to tutoring. In my spare time, I enjoy being outdoors (running, biking, hiking, gardening) and playing with my dog and cat.

I am an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. I have been tutoring for over 6 years now, and I have found it to be an extremely rewarding and enjoyable experience. I specialize in mathematics, particularly at the high school level, and I also have experience tutoring other subjects. I also have done SAT prep for the mathematics section of the New SAT and am very familiar with the recent changes to the exam. My belief is that everyone is capable of learning with enough time, explanation, and practice, and I hope to pass this on to all the students I work with. My approach is not "standardized" because I enjoy working one-on-one with clients to tailor learning experiences that address each person's unique needs. As a former professor of communication, I also have the skills to help professionals and graduate students with their research and writing. I am currently helping a doctoral student with her dissertation.

As a tutor, I believe mostly in confidence and consistency. When a student becomes confident and proud of their work, productivity increases drastically. Working on consistently being able to solve problems is essential, and can build this confidence to help students succeed. I often use pneumonic devices, visual presentations, and physical objects to help students learn.

With a Bachelor's degree in Biological Basis of Behavior, I know that laughter really isn't the best medicine; however, it sure does help when you're teaching. I love helping others understand a wide range of subjects, and I do it with enthusiasm, patience, and humor. After focusing on math and science classes in college, I've gained the ability to analyze problems from many different perspectives and help others solve a multitude of problems. Although, what I bring to tutoring sessions is more than just a knowledge of academic material.
