The student and met to go over essay writing for the test and applications. She had some crucial essays due the next week, and it had been awhile since our last essay session, so working on essays seemed like the best use of our time. For the first time since we started working, she found that there are ways to enjoy the process of writing. She has fantastic wit and charisma, but rarely looked at writing as a way to channel her affable disposition. She detached her charming quirks when she put pencil to paper, resulting in a generic, often muted product. We were able to tap into that wealth of charm in the session, and she ended up with two glowing essays bursting with technical ability and gregarious personality.

The student and I continued our exploration of exponents and logarithms, specifically using the log rules to either expand or condense log expressions. We also covered simplifying the expressions where possible by converting into exponential form and finding a numeric answer (ie "lne5=5" or "log base 7 of 7 raised to the 2nd power is 2"). He never ceases to amaze me; this guy who was so overwhelmed by math but is now able to slow down, follow steps, apply rules, and come up with answers for even tough problems!

During this session, we went over synthetic division, long division, finding the equation, and graphing a polynomial equation. We looked through the student's notes and did a couple of practice questions. She definitely got more comfortable with the material as the session progressed; she just needs to watch out for negatives. Overall, this session went well.
