I am a Biologist having gone through a bachelors in Louisiana and now a masters in Missouri with plans to next receive my Ph.D. (who knows where I'll go for that). Early on in my academic career I had thought to be pure science or even medical, but then fell in love with teaching. I have hosted science fair workshops to help students and have taught college level biology. What initially helped me to find my love of teaching was a peer mentorship program my senior year of college where I helped to teach students proper study skills and other useful traits to succeed as a college student. Now I want to run my own lab and be a full professor to teach students of my own. I know that for me it was the professors I met that helped me succeed and nurtured my passion for both teaching and biology. I would love to make an impact like that for students someday myself. I tutor many sciences and maths as those are my strongest subjects but have helped people do well on their ACTS and even helped my friend get into PA school by teaching GRE skills. My favorite subject to tutor is biology as it is my field of study but also because its great helping other people see why exactly it is so interesting. Once students see that biology has a lot of cool facts and fields they can usually learn it easier as they have an interest themselves in it to at least some degree. Please be sure to stop me if I ramble a bit about cool science facts too long. My philosophy when it comes to tutoring is to help students understand how to learn the subjects. Learning is different for everyone and its important that the student finds out how to identify WHAT it is exactly that they don't know. That way they know where to start looking for the solutions. I will Help to build the skills to find those solutions showing you many ways to learn or remember stuff. My tutoring style is to start from where the student is having trouble, show them the goals then work together to reach those. If the student needs help with math we can work step by step on how to reach that and why. If it is biology, then I can explain to them why something is the answer in relation to what they do know so that they can understand why that is the answer. I would love to have a chance to work with both students who think they just need the answers, as well as those who want to know how to find those answers.
