Understanding the process of how to solve a question is crucial when it comes to math and science classes. That's why I help my students to figure out answers on their own as opposed to telling them the answers. I ask my students questions to lead them through the solving process, which engages them and makes them more likely to learn and remember the material. I also think learning and laughing work well together, so I make my tutoring sessions educational and fun.I graduated from Williams College in 2012, where I majored in biology and completed pre-medical studies. I also spent a semester in Spain, taking all classes in Spanish at a Spanish university. After graduation, I went to Africa for six months. I spent three months in Tanzania teaching English and three months in Mozambique working as a research assistant at a health clinic. My international teaching experience helped me become a more creative teacher because I often had to improvise on the spot when my students didn't understand me, which happens quite a lot when you and your students don't speak the same language. Since returning from Africa, I've been working as a math, science, and English tutor for high school students. Forging meaningful relationships and watching my students succeed are what I like most about tutoring.

I graduated from Williams College with a BA in Chemistry and Womens' and Gender Studies and received my MD from Stony Brook University School of Medicine (now Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook U.) in 2016. During college, I developed a keen interest in women's reproductive health and would later factor into my decision to become an OBGYN. Before applying to medical school, I was a college admissions officer at Williams and had the utmost privilege evaluating the best and brightest applicants across the nation. At Stony Brook, I became a teaching assistant in human anatomy and physiology, and received a prestigious fellowship grant from the HIV Vaccine Trials Network where I spent a year conducting both community outreach and clinical research on barriers and facilitators to HIV vaccine trials among underrepresented minorities in NYC. During residency, I discovered that my greatest fulfillment did not come from being a physician but as an educator. Soon after, I transitioned into education where I have since found great success teaching undergrad courses in chemistry, biology, and human anatomy and physiology. My teaching philosophy revolves around cultivating self-motivated learning and resilience and I believe in empowering students to drive their own educational journey. Over the past decade, I have served as a mentor and tutor to countless students and have dedicated myself to increasing the representation of first-generation college students in STEM fields. I have extensive experience preparing medical and nursing students for their licensure exams (USMLE, NCLEX, PANCE) with a particular focus on overcoming past failures on both STEP 1 and 2. And I most enjoy tutoring high school students in chemistry. Both classes required a great deal of writing. My Humanities students had short weekly essays for the small 'writing section' and longer essays for the primary texts. My English students, meanwhile, were required to write independent theses on literary works of their choosing. I enjoyed helping my students to conceive, compose, proofread, and revise these essays.At Portsmouth Abbey, I learned that a teacher must make every effort to enter a student's intellectual world, to meet the student on his or her own terms. I have found a good sense of humor my most useful tool in this endeavor; laughter creates comfort. Moreover, comedy stimulates the intellect, as it appeals to reason (that is, if you're laughing at a joke, that means you've 'gotten it'). I graduated from Williams College in 2007. I then received a Watson Fellowship, and traveled to Romania, Hungary, the Ukraine, and Morocco, collecting oral narratives from women in minority groups. Upon returning to the U.S., I began the PhD program in Comparative Literature at Northwestern University, with a focus in early 20th-century Latin American literature. I just finished my doctorate in December of 2014.During my time at Northwestern, I taught a variety of language and literature courses in both English and Spanish. I was also able to travel extensively: I studied and conducted research in Berlin, Paris, London, Sao Paulo, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires, where I lived for nearly three years.I love teaching and talking about anything to do with words--whether that means literature, reading comprehension, writing skills, grammar, or simply building vocabularies. I tutor the SATs, GRE verbal, AP Spanish, and Spanish language at all levels. Over the summer of my junior year of college, I was asked to tutor a high school student who had missed months of school due to a traumatic sports injury. After earning my B.A. in English from Williams College, I lived in Germany, managed a professional hockey team and tutored again, this time a graduate student who was studying American government. Often the hardest thing for a young writer is forming a unique point of view on a prescribed prompt or topic, especially one that may seem less than relevant to their own life. My goal is to do just that: rouse their natural enthusiasm for a subject and help them support it with evidence that's laid out in a compelling, causal structure. Focusing on causal transitions between paragraphs is a skill rarely taught in secondary education, but often expected at the college level. I learned this the hard way. But my years of writing-intensive tutorial classes at Williams College, combined with my professional experience as a theater director and script editor, have provided me with a range of strategies to help students see their writing as a performance of their thinking.As a history tutor, my approach is similar. It's hard to memorize facts and dates; even harder if you feel personally unconnected to them. Students struggling to memorize people and events in a vacuum need more. I focus on helping my students maintain an active connection to history, boosting and intensifying information retention. I'll help them find unique ways to relate to the past, as well as the note-taking and diagramming methods that work best for them. My students will gain a strong sense of the world in which they live, how it came to be, and how to remember it all when faced with a test or essay.

This turn of events set the stage for the priceless classroom exploratory phase I was seeking.I increased my workload with Prep for Prep and added two more positions to form a full-time schedule of teaching: I now also taught SAT Verbal at Leader’s Academy and New York Regents English Language Arts at the Harlem Children’s Zone. I was successful in these endeavors by relying on the multiple teaching styles and techniques that I had mastered to ensure that students were indeed grasping lessons during our limited contact. My newfound exposure to Harlem combined with the professional development that I received at HCZ piqued my interest for issues in education that transcend the classroom. In the interim, I am an instructor for Varsity Tutors and develop descriptive analysis for all of Major League Baseball’s online entities. I am currently pursuing my graduate studies.

I graduated magna cum laude from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and a minor in molecular biology. I currently work as an assistant teacher at a charter school in Boston. I provide close academic support in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra II at my school. I am comfortable, however, with upper level math classes (such as calculus), and science courses (biology, chemistry, and physics). I am in the process of applying to medical school as well. I have been fortunate to have already been accepted into a couple of schools. I would love to help you prepare for the MCATs and get a head start on your medical school application. I think this one-on-one tutoring model can be a powerful study method in preparing you for success in both the classroom and on standardized tests. In my spare time, I enjoy skiing, running, playing board games, and performing/learning magic tricks!

As a passionate tutor with a B.A. in Russian and Political Science from Williams College and a strong science background, I am dedicated to helping students excel in multiple disciplines. I earned perfect scores in the English, Reading, and Science sections of the ACT as well as the Organic Chemistry section of the DAT, and was a National Merit Semifinalist and AP Scholar with Distinction. After graduating, I taught English overseas as a Fulbright awardee, earned a 4.0 in a post-baccalaureate program studying Human Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physics, and Physiology, and was admitted to an Ivy League dental school. With over 2 years of teaching and tutoring experience, I emphasize strategy-building and critical thinking techniques to help students develop widely applicable skills.

I graduated Williams College with a BA in Russian Language and Literature. I currently work as a residential advisor at an international school in Boston, and I really enjoy living and working with ESL students from around the world. During my college years, I gained a wealth of experience tutoring one-on-one, in the classroom, and online. I've helped college students with Russian grammar as a Peer Tutor, provided writing feedback to AP English students at local high schools, worked with homeless children at an after-school program in Brooklyn, and taught full Russian classes at Upward Bound summer schools. I tutor a variety of subjects, but I especially enjoy English, Literature, and SAT verbal. Having published papers and presented at academic conferences, I am eager to share my expertise with academic writing. Beyond fixing grammar and punctuation, I love to help students improve the quality of their analysis, structure and sense of their arguments, and transitions between ideas. I believe that writing skills are crucial, not only for test prep and college admissions, but for finding fulfilling work and support for ideas that matter. In my spare time, I play violin and viola, go running, and travel as much as I can.
