During my time at Drexel University, I worked as a teaching assistant for a graduate level Anatomy course for a year. I have passed the NATA-BOC, NATA, NASM-CPT, NASM-FNS, and NASM-CES exams on the first attempt. I know how to prepare, study, and pass professional exams! I currently assist with coaching a USATF XC & Track team; however, I miss teaching academically. When I think of what learning means to me, I think of gaining knowledge or a skill based upon being taught, studying yourself, or an experience. My grandfather used to always say that "education is the one thing people can't take away from you" and it is true, once you know something it's there to stay. A successful learning situation for myself would be being able to teach someone something, not only so they understand it, but also understand it enough to ask questions and think critically about it. I want to be able to challenge and intrigue my students, and leave them curious about the subjects they are learning.I place a high value on critical thinking, while tutoring the best question I can be asked is "But why" it means the student is thinking critically about the answer and the concept and not just trying to learn the answer. A teaching method I employ often is the use of a real-life example. Something that I think helps a student learn a concept is being able to apply what they are learning in their subjects to their everyday life. Breaking down something in terms of an idea that the student can relate too can be beneficial when trying to help them grasp a concept. I started as a pre-med major at Pomona College. However, the academic success I achieved in high school did not translate I had to relearn how to approach academics. A large influence on my change was my experience with Building Leaders on Campus (BLOC), an organization predominantly comprised of men of color to develop our leadership potential. This organization developed me as a leader and gave me a foundation for understanding what it takes to lead a team. I started this organization as a freshman, and devoted a large amount of my time to it by fundraising, organizing diversity-centered events and developing it into a self-sustaining entity that comprises at least thirty students every year. This was my first opportunity to act as a conduit helping people in my community learn more about taking care of themselves. I helped build a safe space for students who felt marginalized and silenced. Like the way I wanted to help people in my community with their health issues. It gave me the leadership and interpersonal skills needed to become a physician.I entered a rigorous graduate program to become a more competitive applicant. While in school I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald house also while working 20 hours a week as a server and 20-30 hours a week performing research. This taught me how manage my time well like how I would need to in medical school. Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House allows me to experience numerous disparities firsthand and to build a personal connection with families whose child is undergoing long term care. This is the difference between treating the symptoms and considering the factors that may cause them like ethnicity, environment, and socioeconomic status. This work I can bridge the gap between treating a patient and treating the person. I also bring years of experience in tournament chess, where I trained under former Women's World Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk and competed in state and collegiate championships.
