I started as a pre-med major at Pomona College. However, the academic success I achieved in high school did not translate I had to relearn how to approach academics. A large influence on my change was my experience with Building Leaders on Campus (BLOC), an organization predominantly comprised of men of color to develop our leadership potential. This organization developed me as a leader and gave me a foundation for understanding what it takes to lead a team. I started this organization as a freshman, and devoted a large amount of my time to it by fundraising, organizing diversity-centered events and developing it into a self-sustaining entity that comprises at least thirty students every year. This was my first opportunity to act as a conduit helping people in my community learn more about taking care of themselves. I helped build a safe space for students who felt marginalized and silenced. Like the way I wanted to help people in my community with their health issues. It gave me the leadership and interpersonal skills needed to become a physician.I entered a rigorous graduate program to become a more competitive applicant. While in school I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald house also while working 20 hours a week as a server and 20-30 hours a week performing research. This taught me how manage my time well like how I would need to in medical school. Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House allows me to experience numerous disparities firsthand and to build a personal connection with families whose child is undergoing long term care. This is the difference between treating the symptoms and considering the factors that may cause them like ethnicity, environment, and socioeconomic status. This work I can bridge the gap between treating a patient and treating the person. It allows me to see a side of healthcare that I feel is missed.Pomona's interdisciplinary approach gave me the opportunity to learn about the sociological determinants of health, about how disconnects between doctors and their patients are anything but rare, and about how these disconnects can be improved through cultural competency. This mixed with the leadership skills I gained with BLOC fueled my desire to become a physician. By combining these skills with the understanding that I gained from my coursework of the sociological structures that influence health outcomes in those same communities, I will be a leader in my community who will educate others. In 1998, I earned my Master of Physical Therapy from Allegheny University of the Health Sciences. After working as a physical therapist for several years, I continued practicing and earned my Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2014. I have been a clinical instructor to numerous physical therapy students. In addition, I taught Therapeutic Exercise and Therapeutic Modalities & Pharmacology as an adjunct professor for athletic training students. Because I had experience in opening two physical therapy clinics for a hospital employer and a private practice employer, I decided to utilize that experience to open my own independent physical therapy practice in 2015. After earning my NASM Personal Training Certification and pursuing specializations in Fitness Nutrition and Corrective Exercise, I closed my physical therapy practice in 2021 to focus on my current wellness business. I have passed the NATA-BOC, NATA, NASM-CPT, NASM-FNS, and NASM-CES exams on the first attempt. I know how to prepare, study, and pass professional exams! I currently assist with coaching a USATF XC & Track team; however, I miss teaching academically. I am excited to join the Varsity Tutor platform to teach and mentor students who are interested in athletic training, physical therapy, personal training, and nutrition. I am a gym-rat and an endurance junkie! I workout almost 2 hour every day because I love how exercise increases my energy. Let's face it: Math can be tough. So why not make it easier with a personal tutor there help explain the hard things?I have over 5 years of private and group tutoring in all math levels from middle school to high school. I have helped students with Algebra I and II, Geometry, Precalculus, Trigonometry, and Calculus, as well as test prep for the SAT. In that time period, I have had the opportunity to work with dozens of students with different backgrounds, skill levels, and learning styles. As much as tutoring helps the student, it also helps me. My instruction incorporates the best techniques and explanations that I have found most effective over the years.I believe there are two critical ingredients needed to conquer any math issues. The first, is the quality of the tutor. Without a doubt, many people can teach you how to do a math problem, but not everyone can help explain it in such a way that you understand it and can apply the knowledge to future problems. The second important ingredient to successful learning is a positive attitude by the student. When tackling tough math problems, many students begin to feel overwhelmed by the material. I make sure to teach the material at a level the student can understand before progressing to more difficult problems. I have found that this approach allows the student to build up their confidence in the material, which directly translates into a willingness to learn and work hard.In addition, I highly value communication during the tutoring process. This involves keeping parents updated with how lessons are progressing and what was covered and could also include reaching out to school teachers to learn more about the material being covered. This also allows both the student and parents to give me feedback if a certain style of teaching helped a lot or not as much.
