It is a modern re-telling of a classic Korean folk-tale and involves shamanism, loss, and empowerment. Taking part in and sharing stories like that motivates me to teach, to write, and to learn.Outside of academics, I like to create. Sometimes that means baking or knitting, and sometimes that means creating a whole world for my friends to explore in Dungeons and Dragons. I attended Princeton University for undergraduate and Rutgers for my master's degree and have a Master's in Finance. I have been tutoring since I was in middle school, and I've done tutoring on and off for 12 years as of now. My favorite subject to teach is and always has been chess, but since I started college I've expanded to SAT and ACT prep as well as college essay and general admissions coaching. For me, the most important thing in teaching is maximizing retention: I will make jokes and tell stories, "wasting" time during the lesson, to make sure that the important parts of what I say are engrained just as much as the nonsense. I do this because in my experience, this is the best way to learn and prepare for Math related exams. My own experiences taught me the influence that an educator can have on a budding reader. As a high school freshmen, I was more interested in the cracks in the ceiling than any books being discussed. But one educator took a personal interest in me, and introduced me to Joseph Heller's letters. The humor pulled me in, and the insight kept me going. I was struck by a writer's power to put the world in sharp, sane relief.I pursued my newfound interest to a Bachelor's Degree in English at Princeton, and my current pursuit of a fiction MFA at Columbia University. On the professional front, I have served editorial roles at Standard & Poor's, Encore Magazine, and Untitled. These experiences taught me the key role that written communication plays outside of academia, and the universal value of sharpening that skill.I believe that patience and empathy are essential to teaching.
