What is your teaching philosophy?

I think that teaching is a unique experience between each individual, teacher, and student. The more the teacher knows the student and how they learn, the better the results.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would ask them their hobbies to get a personal feel for the student, and then ask them to explain their goals and what methods they have tried before that do and don't work to progress towards those goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help a student become an independent learner by helping them learn to take pride in their efforts and the process of learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by teaching them that effort in learning is a reflection of themselves.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would help them first break down the question and ask them what the question is really trying to ask them for each specific skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

With reading comprehension, I would definitely say the key is to practice and review problems that they've done before. Not just problems they got incorrect, but every problem they did to learn what methods work.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When I start to work with a student, I think the best strategy is to let them realize what methods work for them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help them get excited by showing them how they could apply each subject to their everyday lives. Also, I would set goals that they would work towards to provide intrinsic motivation along the way.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would definitely provide quizzes or small problem sets to make sure the student understands the material, as well as some Socratic dialogue.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would build a student's confidence in a subject by showing them just how far they've come since we began learning the material.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by taking a look at their current performance and seeing what they've been lacking on.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by noticing what techniques work and what techniques do not.

I typically use a small whiteboard for diagrams, scratch paper, and some flash cards.
