Tutoring review by Mihir in Hampton Bays, NY
The lesson today went quite well. I reviewed the topics that we talked about in the last session and gave him a small assessment, just to judge how much of the topics he had retained. This week I taught him fraction simplification and how to write mixed numbers as improper fractions. The student struggled with the concept of simplifying fractions the most, but he was receptive to the information and eager to learn. I left him with around 10-15 extra problems on what we learned. I was happy with his progress, and am looking forward to next week.

The student has started working on anti-derivatives. I went over the basic theory behind them and why they have certain properties such as the constant of integration that appears after the operation. We also began working through his next homework assignment on the topic.

This session we did fraction and proportion work. The student was working with baking a cake and finding the quantities he needed for the cake he wants to bake. He needed help with translating fractions and how to manage the information. At the end we solved in two different ways so he can choose the one that works best for him.

Tutoring review by Maureen in Hampton Bays, NY
The student and I worked on a homework assignment together involving velocity word problems. He did well overall but would still benefit from lots of practice in order to solidify his understanding. He has a good attitude about learning, but I would like to see him work on being more patient with himself while doing these problems. Sometimes he would like to get to an answer right away which is not realistic for multistep word problems. We talked about this and he responded well, so I am hoping to see some improvements here. More practice will also help with this. I asked him to try to finish the last two problems without me and to go back over the problems we already did and try to solve them without me there. We will go over them next week before they are due. He says he has been doing well on all of the assignments that have been graded so far; however, he had 2 quizzes that weren't graded where his missed a few problems due to simple mistakes. We went over the quizzes and talked about test taking strategies that might help him prevent those kinds of mistakes such as reading the questions thoroughly, using extra time to go over problems again, asking the teacher if he needs clarification on the instructions, and looking at the final answer and reasoning whether or not it makes sense. Overall I think the student is doing well at this point in time and would like to see him continue to improve with lots of practice.

Tutoring review by Alan in Hampton Bays, NY
We covered the "Squeeze/sandwich theorem" as well as a few ideas of existence of limits. We then covered some ideas on continuity and tangents lines on piecewise functions. The student came to the session with specific questions and we were able to cover all the material in the given time.

The student and I worked on the properties of logarithms and exponential expressions. We practiced expanding simple expressions into multiple logarithmic statements and compressing statements with multiple logs into a single expression. We also learned the change of base formula and practiced using it to calculate non-standard bases.
