Today I worked with the student. He had a test the next day, so we worked through his review sheet and went over a quiz he got back, correcting the questions that he missed. After that we pulled up a couple worksheets from the online text book that covered material that was on his test.

The student and I covered logarithmic expressions and how to expand and simplify them as well as using the product, quotient, and power rule. His ambitious nature was very encouraging although I advised him that it would be lots of work with plenty of bumps along the road as we tried to fill in as many knowledge gaps as we could today. His attitude was resilient, and he never expressed frustration. In fact, he kept trying, even when he had no idea how to proceed with a problem. I suggested reviewing all of the problems he had solved as practice and reinforcing what he learns after the session so that it reduces the likelihood that he'll forget the material.

The student and I worked on more math. I had brought a bag of gummi bears and a sheet of problems that focused on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. First, went over the rules of each to make sure she had them down. I broke them down in a way that would help her remember which rule applied to which function. Afterwards, I gave her the worksheet. I told her that if she got most of the questions right, I would give her the whole bag of candy. This was to ensure that she would stay focused, be careful, and make sure she double-checked her answers. She actually did much better than I expected. I saw some improvement, and we'll keep working on this in the future.
