Tutoring review by Patrick in Butler, NJ
We discussed the student's finals schedule and about which finals he has academic concerns. From there we discussed a study style and organization ideas for how to wrap his brain around the topics using index cards and a cork-board/bulletin board idea. After that we looked over the topics he figured, at this early point, would make their way onto his math final exam. We did general overviews of each chapter with examples, and tried to center in on what he may need to focus on at a later session. Our next steps are to find out as much as possible about what will be on the final exam and of those topics, what the student may need the most work with.

Tutoring review by Xuan in Butler, NJ
In this session, the student and I began by going over her questions about her homework problems. We reviewed how to compare fractions with different denominators, and how to spot situations where it is possible to use reason to compare fractions. She sometimes thought that it was possible to use mental reasoning to compare fractions in cases where she should have actually used math to do so. So, we continued to work on developing her ability to manipulate and reason with fractions. We discussed whether a given fraction was less than half or more than half - and, using this knowledge, we worked on predicting whether two fractions would add to more than one or less than one. We then tested our predictions by actually adding and subtracting fractions. She did a great job following the steps to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers, as well as explaining her work. However, she was less sure when making predictions about the outcome of more complex problems involving adding or subtracting mixed numbers. We will continue to practice this next time. In the second part of the session, she and I worked on understanding positive and negative numbers. We used a number line to visualize adding and subtracting positives and negatives. We also practiced multiplying positive and negative numbers, and predicting when an answer would be negative and when it would be positive. Overall, she did very well in adding, subtracting, and multiplying with negative numbers. We will work on using negative numbers in algebraic equations during our next session.

Tutoring review by Michelle in Butler, NJ
This was my first session with this student. She started algebra as a 9th grader a week ago. She is hoping a tutor can help clarify some of her questions as she progresses through the class. In this session, we worked through her homework from Chapter 2.5 and 2.6. There were many multi-step word problems and absolute value problems that we worked through while clarifying the teacher's notes and formulas. We also looked back on the review packet where she was able to show me which problems she had trouble with - finding X when there are fractions and when X is part of a fraction. We talked about the different methods for solving these problems and which method might work best for her. We talked about the importance of finding a common denominator and of doing the same operations to both sides of the equation.
