How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Phonics is a great tool for helping students learn to read. Schools use phonics to help students learn the relationship between letters and their sounds. Students can learn the differences between long and short vowels, how letters blend together, and much more. Proficiency in phonics is key to your student becoming an efficient reader. Students who struggle with this can fall behind their classmates. If your student is having difficulties with these concepts, it can be hard for them to catch up with the rest of their class. A personal tutor could work with them to focus on these issues. Varsity Tutors offers educational directors who can help you find a phonics tutor in Long Island, New York, to work with your student.

Phonics can be challenging for students because the English language only has 26 letters, but it has 42 phonemes, or sounds. With no distinguishing marks, we rely on letter combinations to make different sounds. Memorizing all of these rules, and their exceptions, can be challenging for students. However, when they work with a tutor, learning can be enjoyable. Phonics tutoring in Long Island can make learning phonics into a game for your student. Your student's tutor can find a method that works well for them and then teach them in that manner. No matter how your student prefers to learn, a personal tutor can cater to their learning needs.

Phonics Tutoring review by Sarah in Long Island, NY
We went over the homework I gave the student last week. He did well for the most part. We had to go over summarization of paragraph vs passage. He began working on a practice test. We broke it into chunks so he would get feedback as he was working on it.

Phonics Tutoring review by Alexander in Long Island, NY
With a group of four students today, we reviewed the process of textual analysis as a group. They practiced the process on an informational text today with my guidance, then we worked together on answering multiple choice questions about the text with me modeling, and them talking through their thought process. Finally, the students independently worked on a second informational passage and answered the questions on their own.

Phonics Tutoring review by Emily in Long Island, NY
The student started off today's session writing sentences using her vocabulary words. After we did vocabulary, we worked on her social studies assignment for the week. Today we discussed tall tales and what the reasons for tall tales were. We also discussed that subjects of tall tales are usually seen as heroes, and have multiple variations of their story-- some real, some exaggerated. As a result, she had to write a sentence on what could have happened in real life, and what may have been exaggerated. She also drew a picture to go along with the sentences. To end our session, she read Steven Kellogg's interpretation of "Johnny Appleseed."

Phonics Tutoring review by Bekah in Long Island, NY
Today we moved up a step in all of his activities. Now, when he writes, I have him write full sentences, complete with capitalization and punctuation; additionally, I now correct him when he sounds out words and spells them wrong (this is a skill we are building). Also, I am bringing a bigger, more complicated book for the week. We start it on Monday, taking turns, and finish it on Wednesday. For phonetics, I am playing card games with him and tackling things like a silent "e" at the end of the word, as well as words that start with "q" and "o" sounds.

Phonics Tutoring review by Carolyn in Long Island, NY
The student and I reviewed grade-level reading passage with comprehension questions. Phonics focused on vowel variants of "a" as in ant, apron, father, alive and tuba. We also did basic math review with two-digit addition and subtraction without regrouping and place value.
