Today we covered: An introduction to chem, characteristics of matter, scientific measurements, Atomic theory, structure of the atom, and electron configuration. In this session we reviewed the content for Unit 16 and Unit 17. For unit 16 we covered mole-mass and mole-volume conversions, percent composition, molecular and empirical formulas. For unit 17 we focused on stoichiometry and limiting reactants. After some practice, the student remembered most of the formulas and she did very well with percent composition problems.

We continued to cover information about acids and bases. Particularly, we distinguished molecular/ ionic/ net ionic equations and considered whether dissolved salt solutions were acidic/ basic or neutral. We practiced problems computing pH, pOH given initial molarity and using ICE tables. I also helped the student develop a more solid understanding of ionic charges and how to determine the charge from the periodic table and in a given compound. She seems to have a solid understanding of the concept of an acid and base and the difference between strong and weak acids/ bases.

The student had a lab and write-up on semipermeable membranes and osmosis. She understood the concept of tonicity, but had some problems expressing her understanding in the appropriate scientific language. We worked on stating the results in specific and clear sentences. She did well interpreting the results of the experiment based on her hypothesis. Additionally, she was able to apply the concepts learned in the lab to new situations. Her major hurdle this session was realizing the lab was an extension of the material she had just covered in the textbook.
