I reviewed the student's Unit 9 worksheet with her thoroughly this afternoon. I especially focused on questions where she had written an answer (presumably from copying the teacher's on the board during class) but hadn't shown any work. I asked the student about the setup and steps needed to solve the problems, eventually revealing that she didn't really know or needed practice. I then led her through the reasoning and steps and had her practice and write out notes. We finished by checking grades in each class.

The student worked on a Math practice test to prepare for next week's state assessment. She got 10/10 on the domain 4 cumulative assessment and all problems correct for the additional practice problems I gave her to work on, comparing and ordering fractions.

The student had a packet assigned from school, so we worked on that. It covered exponents, positive and negative, with and without variables, and distributed. Once she understood the rules for dealing with them, she was able to complete two pages without much help. She is very good at paying attention to the details, and makes sure to write down each step, so she doesn't often make little systematic errors that can be a common problem for other students. The last page involved scatter plots and estimations, and she was able to finish it with no problem. Her final is coming up, so we will see if we can get in an extra session next week to be sure she is fully prepared.

On the first day we worked on essay prompts, specifically looking at how to describe an initial reaction to the prompt, and structuring our arguments. The student examined the difference between the opinions and thoughts people hold and what they express in public or different contexts. Then we practiced math problems from the practice SAT. Today we covered math. I taught her the slot machine approach to combinatorics problems (my favorite approach), how to manipulate exponents and radicals, and introduced her to modular arithmetic, which she learned quickly. In general, she is more than capable of understanding and solving the problems. Any issues she has with math or tests are likely issues with confidence; she has more than enough talent. Next Monday we'll do more practice and build her confidence.
