Today was productive. We actually took a little detour from math skills and the student worked on a packet that he has due the next week. We also covered a little grammar.

Yesterday, we looked at more arithmetic sequences and series and geometric sequences and series. Here are my parting tips for the student: Know when a sequence is arithmetic to use the formula for the nth term of the arithmetic sequence and when we have to use the sum of the series formula for an arithmetic sequence which requires us to know the first term and the nth term of the arithmetic sequence as well as n--remember how we needed to use the arithmetic sequence formula and algebra to find n? Remember the formula for the nth term in a geometric sequence and partial sum of a geometric series are different than the formulas for an arithmetic sequence and series. I can bring a worksheet for practicing those two for next time. You can look up Heron's formula for the area of a triangle given three sides too, if you like. Always double-check each step, to see if you've plugged the right numbers into the formulas before proceeding with the calculations and follow the order of operations. At the next session, I will bring some extra worksheets that we might get to work on. I want to prepare you for the final. You are a very good student, and I know you'll do very well.

Last night, the student and I reviewed questions that he wanted to work on from the homework sections 5.3-5.4. These involved integrals, integrals for area, initial value, and finding the area between two curves. He was engaged, asking lots of questions (yay!), and seemed to be receptive to tips. We will start the review for his final on Sunday.

On Wednesday, the student and I worked on being able to use the quadratic formula, completing the square and using the discriminant. He had a harder time with the quadratic formula and completing the process correctly every time. We are working on paying attention to the details like notation for each problem. His attitude is great towards me and he is wanting to do better. By the end of the session, he could do the problems much better but there were still details he was missing. We will continue to work on these until he is a pro.

We had a long and productive night. We talked about school, life, and things back in China while the student did her work, and I believe this is the most productive night we have experienced for her.
