Garfield, NJ tutoring
The student had a transformations worksheet that had more problems like her test last week. She mentioned that she got a 95 on the test and could have had a 100 but changed an answer that would have been correct. Then she had an online assignment to work on, which we finished the session working on. This assignment was a reverse of the other one in which she had to come up with the equation based on listed transformations.

In today's session and last week's session the student and I discussed his common app essay and how he might rework the last third to work better with the first part. We brainstormed ways he could create a second story to serve as a continuation of the first. This week I saw his attempt at a second story, and it was great. What he should work on now is just rethinking some of his phrases for maximum clarity and effect, and making the overall structure of the essay stronger with a few words of connection, or repeated phrases or structures. I pointed out places where he can do this in the draft. I also think it would be very useful for him to have other people read it now and give their own feedback--an advisor or someone else who knows what a successful college admissions essay looks like.

In today's session the student and I went over the nervous system, focusing on the anatomy and functions of the system as a whole as well as the anatomy and function of neurons. We went through a lot of material, taking time between each topic to go over any questions he had about the information. We had time to go over neurotransmitters in some detail and relate it back to how neurons work. We also briefly went over vision and hearing, with me providing examples from the animal kingdom to help those senses. He also told me that he expects to get the results of his test soon. He felt confident after taking it, and I look forward to seeing improvement.
