Tutoring review by Trymain in Demarest, NJ
The student needed to review for a test tomorrow. She did get an A on the last quiz, so now she had a review worksheet to prepare for the test. We started with finding the explicit formula for an arithmetic and geometric sequence. Once we remembered the "catch-all" formula, that was easy. Then to evaluate the sum of a finite sequence, we used a formula that the student found in her book from before. We re-learned how to use it, and it worked fine. We then learned how to use the graphing calculator to help generate the terms in a sequence. The explicit formula can be placed in the "Y=" section of the calculator and then the "table" will give the values. It's quite an ingenious idea! We then worked on the binomial expansion using Pascal's Triangle. It's a lengthy process, however, it is superior to using FOIL. Once the student remembered the pattern for the exponents. Finally, we tried to come up with a way to modify the "sum of powers of integers" formulas. We found a way to make the formula work for us, by observing the terms in the sequence (again, using the calculator to generate terms).

Tutoring review by Erik in Demarest, NJ
We covered the basic function operations, which included addition, division, multiplication, and composition. We also covered the definition of the derivative and techniques for taking the derivative of a function (power/ summation/ product/ quotient rule). She seems capable of taking on new material, because she understood how to work problems once we went through a few examples, but her foundation skills in algebra need to be worked on. She struggled with doing factoring and foiling operations, so these are skills we will continue to work on.

The student and I had a great initial session. We talked first about her LSAT goals, then about the specifics of the test, how it is scored, and how many right answers we'll need to shoot for to get her there. We then looked at each section in depth and talked about the skills she already has that each section tests and what anticipating the kinds of questions we'll be asked can direct how we read and what we look for. Since she has never taken a full-length practice LSAT before, she's going to take one over the weekend. We'll use it for our next session, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Demarest, NJ
The student and I worked through approximately 40 SAT math questions, a reading passage, and a few grammar questions. On math, we focused on geometry, probability, and algebraic expressions. She did well on the majority of the questions. On the reading passage, we focused mostly on understanding author's purpose and context.

Today we saw system equations and solved them by the graphing method. The student is understanding step by step. We also covered reflection shapes in the coordinates, and he understands this concept very well, but because of his hurry, he trends to do the drawings inaccurate. He will be working on slowing down.
