Tutoring review by Michelle in Westport, CT
Today I gave the student a pre-test to find out what she learned this summer during our tutoring and what she still needs to learn. We went over the questions on the test and reviewed anything that she may have forgotten. Then we started talking about linear equations and the slope/y-intercept formula. We reviewed a little bit about graphing linear equations and then we reviewed how to solve one-step and multiple-step equations. Her homework tonight is to finish the worksheet we started today. Tomorrow we will review more graphing and some concepts we have not yet gone over, then I will give her some work to do during the rest of the summer before we meet for our last session.

Today the student and I reviewed for his upcoming chemistry exam testing mole conversions. We worked through a handout featuring mole to volume, mole to mass, and mole to representative particle conversion calculations. We also discussed the differences between empirical and molecular formulas. After he felt comfortable with chemistry, we moved on to discuss imaginary numbers in algebra.

We first reviewed rules of commas once again, followed by discussing commas used for parenthetical phrases.  The student then completed Passages 1-2 on Practice 4 test.  I did notice that he did improve with questions regarding commas.  We then completed Passage 3-4 together, discussing each question as we went.  He and I agreed on most of the questions and by doing so we were able to ace the two passages, thus creating what I believe more confidence in the student.  I believe this session was a breakthrough for him as he shows improvement in his grammar.

Today we covered the history behind Chinese characters and the fundamentals of calligraphy.  The student was asked to identify which characters were written incorrectly, and he made tremendous improvement in this session.  We will continue to dedicate a portion of our sessions to character identification and hopefully will be able to help him correctly write his characters.
