How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The Secondary School Admissions Test, or the SSAT, is a standardized exam that may be required to apply to certain private schools. There are three levels of the test: elementary, middle, and upper. Each level corresponds to the age of the person taking it. Students take the test in the 3rd through 11th grades. Is your child planning on taking this exam? Are they struggling to prepare? Varsity Tutors can help connect them with a tutor to help them prepare thoroughly. New Jersey SSAT tutoring may help your student confidently prepare for the big test.

The four sections on each level of the test include reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, quantitative math, and an essay. Does your child struggle with math the most? If so, their personal tutor can provide study materials and activities to help them brush up on their math skills. They can also give them practice exams that mimic the SSAT's format, which can allow your student to become familiar with how the test is written. If your child has a hard time with reading comprehension, the tutor may provide passages on topics that reflect their interests. For example, if your student likes silent films, their tutor may find an online article about the industry and then ask them to pick out the main points, the genre, or style. The tutor can help your child engage personally with the material. SSAT tutors in New Jersey can help your child relate to the subjects they need to study for the SSAT.

SSAT Tutoring review by Manutej in New Jersey
The student and I went over the critical reading passages in the SSAT test prep book. We focused on longer passages, since these seemed to be his weakness. He is getting much better at answering the question at hand and inferring only when required.

I first taught the student a few math concepts that were specific to the exam, namely systems of equations and permutations/combinations. We then did some practice problems in the verbal section, and went over strategies for the synonyms and analogies.

The student and I met for a second time. He showed me the work I had assigned him, which he had done methodically and accurately which is a good sign. He seems proficient at reproducing strategies and processes, a proficiency which will help him in subjects other than math as well. We then talked about the interchangeability of certain math concepts; namely: division, fractions, ratios, percents, and decimals. He had an "Ah-ha!" moment when he realized the division symbol is a stylized fraction. We finished the lesson by working on word problems. We will work together to devise shortcut strategies and mnemonic devices next time.

We covered reading and quantitative reasoning. The student is improving in reading, and his confidence seems to be growing as well. He is learning some tactics for answering quantitative questions on a standardized test. He picks up information quickly, and can apply it with ease.

SSAT Tutoring review by Jennifer in New Jersey
We went over the student's math homework and then I did an assessment of her reading comprehension skill, as she is taking the ISEE on Saturday. Her reading speed is fine and her accuracy was pretty good. We then discussed radicals (square roots) and how to do math with them and simplify them, and went over how these radicals show up naturally in the geometry of right triangles.

SSAT Tutoring review by Jennifer in New Jersey
The student and I worked through five SAT reading comprehension passages with a focus on humanities, fictional prose, and comparative passages. He did particularly well on the fictional prose and comparative passages, although he struggled some with the humanities passage. We focused on strategies for understanding passage context and argument, as well as timing strategies and evaluating keywords. We will focus on math and grammar during the next session.
