How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The High School Placement Test is used by many private schools as a standardized means of evaluating students for admittance. The exam is given by individual private schools and is not standardized nationally. Typically, the test has sections on language, math, quantitative skills, reading, verbal skills, and any other additional portions the school decides to add. Students studying for this exam need to be aware of what their preferred school may be testing on and then create a review plan that encompasses all of these subjects. That can be a lot of work for a single student, but with the help of a tutor, a personalized curriculum can be created that can address the necessary subjects. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors can help match you with a New Jersey HSPT tutor for your student.

The HSPT tests a student's accumulated knowledge to ensure that they are at the same level as the classes taught in the school. If your student has struggled in the past, then they may need extra work to get ready for the exam. Your student's tutor can assess their skills through a practice test or by working with them. If they notice weaknesses they can address them immediately, or if there are larger gaps, create a lesson plan that re-teaches these concepts. Many students have strengths in a particular subject, but they'll often have weaknesses in other subjects. If this is so, your student's tutor can prioritize the information being taught so that your child is evenly prepared on exam day. New Jersey HSPT tutoring gives your child the opportunity to have specialized learning materials that take their needs into account.

We finished our tutoring program by taking another look at the English and math sections, focusing on some very challenging problems/passages. We reviewed tips on what the most common responses to some different types of questions are and what to do if you don't know how to solve a specific math problem.

The student and I continued working on her essays today. We will continue to work on her writing style to get her essay score up to the high level she's aiming for on the multiple choice portion of the English section.

We read through the chapter in the SAT book on the writing section, going over common things to look for, rules for commas, and semi-colons. We also read about the improving sentences questions in the grammar multiple choice sections and then worked on practice questions together. The student did pretty well with this type of question.

HSPT Tutoring review by Maureen in New Jersey
We continued to review the questions she answered incorrectly on her most recent homework assignment, which was a math test. She did better on this test than her diagnostic, but there is still room for improvement. Since math was her worst subject (on the diagnostic), we are trying to bring that score up significantly, which will help her overall score immensely.

We completed an ACT English test and discussed the student's plans relative to the ACT (i.e. study plan, the month in which she will take the test, etc.). We also went over scoring so that she has a better performance gauge.

HSPT Tutoring review by Amanda in New Jersey
We did general introductions, talked about the student's last SAT testing experience, and discussed overall strategies. We then worked on the Writing section and did practice problems. Specifically, we reviewed the concepts of parallel structure, subject-verb agreement, and the use of semicolons and modifiers. Next, we did practice reading comprehension questions and reviewed strategies for active reading (note-taking, underlining). Finally, we did a few math without calculator questions. Solving systems of equations is a new concept for the student, so we will be doing extra practice in this area. The student was very attentive during the full session! After each section we reviewed the main learning points, and he did a great job remembering them. Before our next session, the student should complete the diagnostic tests (be sure they are timed!) and if time permits, practice problems on systems of equations. Today we worked on content and strategies, but moving forward we will start focusing on timing.
