How can a German tutor help you?

Learning a new language can be a challenging and exciting adventure. You get to learn about a new culture, understand local idioms, and learn about a country in their own language. With German, you study the official language of Liechtenstein, Austria, and, of course, Germany. The language is a difficult mix of tongue twisters, but working with a tutor can help you learn the pronunciations more quickly. The Varsity Tutors educational directors can help you match with a New Jersey German tutor that can work with you throughout your course.

German is a challenging language for English-speaking learners. While it uses a semi-Latin alphabet and utilizes phonetic spellings, the words are long and require conjugation and noun agreement. German has four noun case endings and three grammatical genders. Keeping all of these rules straight as you learn to speak, read, and write the language can be a challenge, but when you learn them with a tutor it may be easier to keep them all straight. A tutor works with you through speaking practice to correct your mispronunciations, and to check that you're constructing sentences properly. While this can happen to a limited extent in a classroom setting, it can be difficult for students to get continuous individualized attention from a general instructor. Private New Jersey German tutoring gives you the opportunity to work on your German skills when you want and have all of your questions answered as you learn.

Session Summaries by German Tutors

German Tutoring review by Brett in New Jersey
Focused work during session on math practice for problem types that the student finds particularly challenging: data interpretation, functions & graphs, and solid geometry. During these practice problems, it became clear that he is able to create equations and solve them, but he sometimes makes simple mathematical errors. I encouraged him to work more slowly and carefully and make sure that he reads the problem fully and answers what it is specifically asking. I asked the student to complete one timed practice math section per day until our next session.

I met, for the first time, with the student, who needed help with Calculus III.  She was in the midst of a looming test and worried.  The test was to cover topics such as vectors, dot products, cross products, 3D planes, graphs and lines, and parametric equations. We reviewed all of these.  I believe it went well, and the student will do much better on this test than she would have otherwise.

We covered chemical reaction kinetics. This included rate laws, how to determine them as a function of concentration, using experimental data to calculate the rate constant k, zeroth, first, and second order rate laws and how to determine concentration as a function of time using the rate law and rate constant k. Also activation energy and energy barriers and the things that need to happen for a reaction to take place: collisions, orientation, and activation energy.

The student had completed a few more Reading and Science passages, so we went over those. It seems she has a great understanding of the passages and can usually verbally tell me the right answers to the questions. Going through practice passages together, I would prompt her with questions that she can ask herself when she's struggling to make a decision. She's going to complete a full test before we meet next so we have a clearer picture of her progress and can better pinpoint what material to cover in Math and English.

German Tutoring review by Ana in New Jersey
Today I worked with the student on dilating graphs using scale factors to increase or reduce the size of the graph. We also briefly went over word problems using the same skill set. He had some difficulty grasping the concept of how to use the x and y coordinates in the problems but understood it towards the end of our session. We will continue to work on finding and plotting points on a graph as that seems to be where he struggles the most with these problems.

German Tutoring review by Patrick in New Jersey
The student and I continued discussing current events in German, and more than before we have started bringing topics from outside our news reports into our conversations, making them more like the types of conversations she'll likely have in Germany. Her ability to create sentences without getting tripped up on grammar and word order is improving each week.
