Tutoring review by Marcello in Newtown, PA
The student and I spent today reviewing quadratics, specifically factoring and using the quadratic formula. We seem to need to spend more time on these since he's having trouble retaining the techniques for solving them, but showed marked improvement by the end of the session. His parent both filled me in on the huge improvement he made on the retake of his math placement exam: went from an 18 to a 28 (scale unknown) and got placed in a higher level math class, which is absolutely spectacular.

Tutoring review by Elyse in Newtown, PA
We talked about strategies for completing the science section of the ACT faster, including going directly to the questions. We then practiced this. We also talked about how to use native speaker abilities to approach the English portion of the test. We completed two passages and went over them, talking about why the correct answer is correct on missed questions. We discussed the contractions "you're," "it's," and "they're."

The student and I went over some hand-picked problems from his previous tests for about 10 minutes.  I did this just to get a good idea of where he was at.  He seemed to have a difficulty understanding sample population parameters and populations parameters, so I helped explained the differences to him using real-life examples.   Then, we went over his test prep review, going over normal distribution, calculating mean, median, mode, and going over the normal distribution table.  Basic algebra concepts were reviewed, like solving for x, because they were incorporated into the material.

Tutoring review by Kathryn in Newtown, PA
The student and I spent our first session reviewing material from her past unit. We reviewed several questions from homework assignments that the student struggled with in the past. We discussed momentum, acceleration, energy conservation, force, and unit conversions. By the end of the session the student seemed much more confident. She was enjoying explaining how to work through problems we confronted. The student struggled the most when translating the conceptual ideas into math equations. Reiterating what each variable means and how they relate to each other will help her in the long run.
