I didn't even consider going to college initially. I worked at KFC as a senior in high school, I was being offered my own store with a salary of 40K, I wasn't even thinking college was an option. Then one fateful day I met with my guidance counselor and she told me about the top ten percent rule. I was in the top ten percent and had the opportunity to go to any Texas school I wanted. Even after finding that out, I was considering not going. However, once I looked at where I was and where I wanted to be, there was no way going to KFC straight out of high school, was going to open to doors I needed opened to be successful.I applied to multiple schools, but once I got into UT, I was set. I didn't want to go anywhere else. I came in as an Education major, changed to sports medicine, then finally settled on Government. I chose government because of all the exposure to that sort of material at my magnet high school in Dallas. I figured my familiarity with the subject would allow me to get a better GPA, which would help me to go to a better law school. I excelled in government classes, as well as Philosophy courses, which led me to making Philosophy my minor. I was very active on my University campus, and lent myself out as a resource to other students in the event they needed assistance or advice.I finished up undergrad in May 2011, and then immediately went into law school at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Urbana. I studied law generally and had an extended focus on litigation. Litigation is the art of courtroom lawyering. I loved that area of the law because I felt that is where the law was meant to be handled. I have a passion for being able to get people to understand complex information in a short amount of time. You don't have a jury's attention forever, you need to be able to get to the point and be understood on the first go round.I graduated from law school in May 2015. I did 3 years of neuroscience research at my university, studying the molecular physiology of epilepsy, autism-spectrum disorders, and Alzheimer's Disease. I also served as a General Chemistry TA, where I led discussion sections of 20-30 students each semester. I am proud to have been featured on UIUC's published list of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students for three semesters! While I tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology. I am also skilled in preparing students for college entrance exams (ACT and SAT) and Advanced Placement (AP) exams.I'd like to say that I have never struggled in school, but that is simply not the case. I know very well the struggle and frustration with receiving bad marks no matter how much effort I put in. I felt myself the anxiety surrounding standardized testing, especially before and during the ACT, SAT, and 10 AP exams I took as a high school student. It was through these less-than-pleasant experiences, though, that I sought out mentors and adopted strategies over the years that have not only led me to success on standardized tests, but sustainable academic success. My teaching philosophy centers much upon identifying learning styles, accountability, resilience, and growth, as I have found these themes to be paramount to my own academic success. As a teacher/mentor I hope to encourage and empower my students with personalized strategies that will last, rather than try to direct them to arbitrary scores.

I believe in a growth mindset when it comes to learning. With the correct amount of self-confidence and drive, you can learn anything!

Hi! I'm a proud graduate of the University of Illinois, and what excites me most is helping others learn. I got firsthand experience as a peer tutor at Joliet Junior College, where I worked with students on Math, Spanish and Chemistry. Being a native Spanish speaker, I truly understand the journey of learning a new language(the "aha!" moments and the little frustrations)and I love being someone who can help smooth the path. When I'm not tutoring, you can usually find me watching a great movie or cooking up some of my favorite Peruvian recipes!

Eleven years ago, I graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign with a degree in English Literature. Following this experience, I worked as a writing instructor at Olive-Harvey College.I moved on to earn a Masters degree from Boston University, where I studied print journalism. While in Boston, I wrote news articles that appeared in the following publications: the Lowell Sun, the Somerville News, the Allston-Brighton TAB and the Dig.I left the East Coast to write and edit news content on a full-time basis for a small newspaper in Oklahoma. The publication was called the Daily Ardmoreite. While working there, I wrote news articles and feature stories. And it was my responsibility to copy-edit articles before they were published.I returned to the Midwest to work for an organization called the National Safety Council. While working for a non-profit group, I wrote content for their monthly magazine with a circulation of nearly 100,000. And I also wrote articles for safety officials that appeared in their news blogs and newsletters.My next professional opportunity was at Groupon, where I edited web content under a tight daily deadline and quickly fact-checked written material for clarity and accuracy.I currently work for a different tech company, where I also review web content. And I currently have a job where I manage editorial content before it appears in print and online for a science journal that is published by the American Medical Association.With regards to working with students, I have the ability to help them with proofreading and editing due to my background with managing, editing and writing online and print content coupled with my experience working at a community college. I am fully prepared me to help students edit material at the high school and undergraduate level. Naturally, I look forward to helping students produce well-written content in a timely fashion.
