Interviewed the student about her previous SAT.  Worked on strategy ideas involving Pacing, POE, Guessing, Answer grouping, focusing on what the question is asking for, answer numbers in order low to high, working easy & medium problems first.  Reviewed specific math results from last test.  Set up schedule for remaining sessions.  Provided web site for math practice problems (this is homework).  Worked problems in 3 different math areas of exam.

In this session, we reviewed the math section of one of the student's practice tests.  She seemed to have a good understanding of many of the problems.  In addition, we reviewed some of the reading passages from her practice test and went over the questions that she got wrong.  We discussed what inference questions were and how to approach them.

We did some more integration. This time using trigonometric substitutions. I had him explain everything to me as if I didn't know anything about it, and he was able to answer my questions about his reasoning.

We discussed goals for tutoring sessions before ACT exam, as well as areas of strength and areas in which the student would like to improve, in order to create a lesson plan for the summer.  I discussed college plans with the student and provided advice on college entrance requirements.  We practiced ACT science reasoning passage questions, broke down the different types of science reasoning questions, and briefly introduced strategies for the ACT science reasoning section with the student.

We finished up the reading section by looking at two more sample passages, both of which the student was able to address without issue. Next time we look at this section should be our post-test. We then returned to our assessment test vocab words; I introduced the student to a word web vocab exercise and was excited to see her respond so well to it. Will make more use of this method in our next session.

Tutoring review by David in West Chester, PA
The student and I worked on precalculus. We compared and contrasted the sine and cosine functions and their roles in the unit circle, in right triangles, and in different quadrants of the unit circle. We correlated the graphs of sine and cosine with their values, as a way of (approximately) checking work. We took several approaches to determining the value of sine and cosine functions in different quadrants of the circle, including reference angles, and angle addition and subtraction identities. We used the addition and subtraction identities to derive most of the other approaches to sine and cosine functions around the unit circle. We noted that triangles' axes, when oriented in the unit circle, take on positive and negative values, as appropriate, according to the mnemonic "All Students Take Calculus."
