English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Emily in New Jersey
Today, the student and I finished and polished the storyboard for his novella. We added in three conversations involving the villain of the story. We also finished outlining the climax of the story. The student is set up now to write the whole story. The student is very excited about his novella, and seems to have a great enthusiasm for it. The student needs to write as much as possible of the novella this week, so that we can do editing next week.

We discussed the book we are reading together: Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. The student had questions and I encouraged him to read on, but tantalizing him with details. We reviewed the current vocabulary lists and the student did very well. I have written an adventure study which features the SAT words and I will continue it, using more SAT words. He liked my story. Then, we began to study the Nominative Absolute to further develop his sentence style. I gave him an exercise sheet which asks him to combine sentences using it.

The student and I worked on identifying parts of speech (gerund, participle, prepositional phrases, etc.) and using them correctly in sentences. We then continued with assessment reading practice.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Abira in New Jersey
The student and I started off our session by working on a creative writing assignment. He wrote a very nice story. He came up with an interesting story, and included excellent dialogue. I had mentioned to him in one of our previous sessions to make sure that he uses vivid language, similes, and descriptions which he did successfully in this writing piece. Before writing the story, he and I made an outline and did some planning together. He and I also started working on another writing assignment. We will pick up where we left off during our next tutoring session. I had him read two passages and watch one video about the California Gold Rush. I told him to think about what he read, take examples from the passages and videos and decide whether or not he would like to be a gold digger. He started writing the essay, but didn't finish. We did some essay planning and came up with good ideas and a rough outline.

We reviewed the student's homework assignment of persuasive and argumentative essays. She suggested we review Much Ado About Nothing for her test tomorrow, so we did. We went through the entire plot, and she gave a rundown of the events. She practiced quote analysis when I chose quotes at random from the story. She practiced answering questions from the story, and we prepared for her short essay on deception in the story. She structured it in a rough outline form and we talked about different examples to use. She is working on a paper due Friday that she is going to send me more background on. I also mentioned how I'm going to send her some poetry to analyze that we can work on in the next session.
