I graduated from Grand Canyon University with a degree in Early Childhood Development with a teaching endorsement. I hold a Washington State teaching license. My love for teaching started in my late teens. Since starting to teach in 2000 I have had the privilege of teaching all age groups from young children to grandparents all across the United States. My passion is with the younger students. I have been tutoring ESL students after school for the last three years at the private school I teach at. While I can and do tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about phonics, language, and math. I believe that fostering the love of reading early on leads to life long learners. While teaching, I went to school online at Grand Canyon University where I received a Master of Science in Instructional Design. I love to read so this is where my passion lies in teaching. I have found that students have the most trouble with reading comprehension, test type questions, and writing constructed responses. They struggle with developing their critical thinking from the "what" to the "why". It is my goal to help students dive deeper into stories to develop their reading and writing abilities.

I began tutoring my fellow peers in Chemistry when I was a Sophomore in High School. I enjoy sharing my own techniques and tools to help obtain a different level of understanding. Critical and logical thinking is my main way of thinking. I enjoy the moment when something "clicks" to the person I am tutoring/teaching, it is a great feeling to know that methods and ways work and that the students enjoy learning, I love when they get excited that they finally achieved a level of understanding. As a high school student I began to tutor fellow students at my school. I have always enjoyed helping people. While obtaining my bachelor's degree from Morris Brown College in psychology, I tutored at the student center part-time. After graduation, I started working as a paraprofessional with Clayton County Schools and continued to tutor students in the after school program. I became more passionate about learning when I became a parent of a son who struggled in school. We worked diligently on his school work, but he continued to struggle.After being told my son needed an individual educational plan, I went into learning mode. In my fourth year of education, I decided to go back to school and obtain my Masters in Education with a concentration in Special Education. I worked as a registered nurse for 18 years at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit, MI in the NICU taking care of premature babies. I have been teaching for six amazing years and absolutely love tutoring nursing graduates with Varsity Tutors in order to prepare them to take their NCLEX exam and PASS it with much self confidence! I enjoy changing the futures of my students and setting them up for an exciting and life changing career in nursing opportunities! I encourage my students to ask many questions during our sessions together, because teaching is a process of learning for both the students and the teacher. My students come first and I will do anything to help them understand the material and excel in the goals of the individualized Learning Plans that we develop together. I do not cancel sessions with my students because that adds to their anxiety, and they are already pretty anxious about taking the NCLEX in general. I tried my hardest not to become a teacher. My mom was a teacher, my godmother was a teacher, and both grandmothers were teachers. However, it is clearly in my blood because here I am 20 years after graduating with a bachelor's and master's in education! I love teaching. I love to see the ah-ha moment on a student's face. I don't really have a favorite subject to teach because the subject isn't what makes teaching fun. It is the students. I have a background in applied management, but am working towards becoming a certified teacher. I have experience both as a tutor and also working with children in different settings. I understand how tough certain subjects can be for students since I've been 'that student' myself. For me, my most challenging subject was science.
