Today was my first session with the student. She told me that her chemistry final is coming up. After introductions, we started working on some fundamental concepts within the material that she is currently going over in class. We went over redox reactions: finding oxidation states of elements in compounds, differentiating oxidizing/reducing agents, and ended our session with balancing redox reactions. She was determined to gain a strong understanding, and we worked through quite a few problems today until she felt as though she knew them all. We plan to meet again next week Monday, where I hope to review and reinforce what we went over today, and then move on to the next sections in her chemistry book.

Worked on three graded nomenclature assignments. Completed a worksheet on nomenclature for ionic compounds when the metal has multiple valance states. Completed the first half of a worksheet on the nomenclature of acids, and completed the first half of a worksheet that mixed the nomenclature of binary molecules, ionic compounds, and acids. The student needed to complete the latter two worksheets after dinner. The student appears to have a greater command over the material. He is able to provide the answers to some questions without any assistance from me and is getting through the work more quickly. All the practice he has had to do over the past few weeks has even committed some chemical element symbols and ion formulas to his memory.

We went over the chemical equilibrium practice section of the student's test prep book. He seems to have the concepts mastered, but needs to focus on writing out his work to catch his math mistakes. We are going to cover acids and bases and titrations in our next (and last) session before his AP test.
