How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

Students today are finding standardized tests to be the norm all throughout their academic careers. For many private and Catholic school students, this process starts with the SSAT, or the Secondary School Admissions Test. The SSAT is used to measure a student's academic abilities and placement in middle and high school, and may be even be used to determine a student's admittance to an institution.

The SSAT is offered every month between October through April, and again in the month of June. It is offered to students in grades 3-11, and has three different levels: Elementary, Middle, and Upper. The time of the test varies based on the test level taken, but it is anywhere between two to three hours. Students are evaluated in four different areas, including reading comprehension, quantitative, verbal reasoning, and an essay section.

Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Lily in Philadelphia, PA
First, we checked some math problems I assigned for homework and reviewed the vocabulary words I asked her to look up. Then we moved on to synonyms. Vocabulary seems to be a challenge so we will begin working on some roots and prefixes/suffixes. In the meantime, we keep track of any words she doesn't know throughout the practice problems and she defines them on her own. I've asked her to review vocabulary with her parents at home, but I will also devote some time to this.

I had my first session with the student today. He is a bright boy. We did an assessment today to see where he is. Math was definitely his stronger subject.

SSAT Tutoring review by Rebecca in Philadelphia, PA
Our plan is to use half the time doing SSAT prep and the other half math in general. Today we covered/practiced: analogies, reading comprehension with a passage, correcting grammar/conventions, vocabulary, and began algebra. In math we did some problem solving, place value, percentages, conversions, and a touch of algebra. Also throughout I was able to assess his computation skills, as well. Today I have a better idea of what he knows, how he works, and what direction to take him.

SSAT Tutoring review by Rebekah in Philadelphia, PA
The student again practiced breaking down word problems worked through finding keywords that would give you clues to what operations to do. We practiced underlining important information and circling the numbers we would need. We began working on one-step Algebra as well as perimeter and area of irregular shapes. She got frustrated with the Algebra and at first didn't like to show work on the perimeter and area problems but as we worked through more her confidence and speed with them definitely improved.

SSAT Tutoring review by Abbi in Philadelphia, PA
I had the students review the essay strategies and write a short essay based on the 4th grade level requirements (a photo topic instead of a prompt). They had 15 minutes and each of them were able to complete it. We then reviewed the verbal analogies they did last session, and they did a few more practice problems. Then we covered some of the basic algebra and how to solve some of the basic equations that might be on the test. Then I split them into different study stations: 1) math assessment 2) synonyms 3) word matching review with me. It seemed to go well. Next session will be our last, and we will cover some of all the test parts as well as an overview of what to expect on their test day.

SSAT Tutoring review by Leslie in Philadelphia, PA
The student and I reviewed reading comprehension and went through two long passages together. We then reviewed her homework on analogies, functions, and charts. We then covered a few fundamental math concepts such as factors, multiples, order of operations, and negative numbers. We reviewed multiplication and division nomenclature. For homework, I will be assigning her a full length practice SSAT. No concerns.
