How can a Reading tutor help you?

If your child is struggling with reading concepts, then they may benefit from the help of a private tutor. A tutor can meet with them at a time and place that works around your family's busy schedule. They can even meet online. Varsity Tutors can help you find professional reading tutoring in New Jersey.

Private New Jersey reading tutoring can provide a one-on-one environment for your child to work through their reading struggles. They can feel comfortable asking their tutor as many questions as they need to on concepts such as plot or phonemic awareness. Many times, when a child struggles with reading, they do not feel confident enough to ask questions in a class filled with their peers. They also generally do not look forward to practicing, because it is something they struggle with. Their tutor can help make learning and reading fun by creating engaging and personalized lessons designed just for your child. They can get to know your student and their personality, hobbies, and interests. This information can then be used to relate abstract concepts such as cause and effect to real-life scenarios that your child can relate to and is interested in. For example, the tutor may help them build their understanding of the concept of characters by relating the concept to your child's friends or to family members. To get your child to practice and begin to enjoy reading, the tutor may find several books that are at your child's level and relate to something of interest to them. They can then read these books together to help your child practice reading aloud.

I took the student's love for creating stories and made up short 4-5 sentence stories. We then used the skill of stretching sentences that we've been working on the last 2 sessions and stretched the stories. This was a good exercise because he could actually see the story getting better. Lastly, I gave him a bunch of words and challenged him to create a story with a clear beginning middle and end.

Reading Tutoring review by Allison in New Jersey
First we did some writing and vocabulary work, focusing on colonial America. We read a passage and then he wrote a summary. We also went over vocab words, first trying to figure out the definition using context clues, and then going over the actual meaning. We went over words like, tend, plow, yoke, barley, etc. We then did some more reading with a normal nonfiction book, verbally delivering a summary after each chapter. Lastly, we did some long division, but with different approaches. All of the problems needed to be solved with division, but they were asked in varying ways, like work problems, pictures, and equations like 48 X N = 912 N = ?

Reading Tutoring review by Sara in New Jersey
I reviewed a lot with the student. We went over adverbs, and did some adverb exercises. Then we reviewed prepositions, conjunctions, compound subjects, and compound predicates. He had to do writing exercises with each of them and he did well. Compound subjects and predicates were a little tricky, but I found a way to relate it things he knew to him have a better grasp on it.
