Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by Ami in Joliet, IL
This was my first session with the student, so I used it to gauge where she's at, generally speaking, in her SAT preparation. She told me that she had worked with a tutor before but that it hadn't helped her achieve an SAT score near her goal. We decided to focus on critical reading during this session, and I had her do a practice critical reading section so that I could see what she was struggling with. We then went through the section in great detail, focusing on the errors she had made. She was also running short on time and felt that she did not have enough time to read the passages and answer the questions, so I had her try a strategy where she instead read just the introduction, conclusion, and topic sentences of the passage, as well as any lines that were asked about specifically in the questions. This strategy seemed to work well for her, since she was able to read the passage and answer the questions in 10 min, and she only missed 4 questions.

The student and I had a great session. We focused on math concepts: quadratic graphing, quadratic functions, and complex numbers. She initially struggled due to her pulling Houdinis (vanishing negative signs and numbers), but eventually she grasped the concepts and was able to apply them consistently. Her homework is to do the no calculator section of the 1st practice test.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Danielle in Joliet, IL
The student and I had a productive session. She did a practice test and did a lot better on the math than last time. She seems to be more confident about the math. She's doing better on scrambled paragraphs. I'm pretty satisfied with her performance on the logic. In reading, it's important not to rush through and look for exact words in the text that support the answers. If it's not exact wording, it's probably not proven in the text. We will continue to go over this.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Matthew in Joliet, IL
The student and I had our first tutoring session this afternoon for his preparation for the SAT II Bio exam. We started off with a brief overview of strengths/weaknesses, and he and I decided to start from the beginning of the chapters with fundamental biochemistry. We went over this topic in decent depth, and I feel that when he had to apply the information that I had taught, he showed a good ability to retain the concepts. I think he has a good ability to eliminate incorrect answer choices, but he needs to be careful with the question stem wording. We decided that he will do content review of Chapters 5-7 and highlight all topics that are not clear or he is struggling with. I gave him my email and encouraged him to reach out to me if he has any questions before our next session. I also sent him a link to a site with several practice and diagnostic tests if he feels inclined to do one of these to get a bearing on where he stands currently.
