Session Summaries by Mandarin Chinese Tutors

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Michele in Joliet, IL
During this session we worked on several online homework assignments. These assignments covered the present subjunctive, the present subjunctive vs. infinitive, and vocabulary about obtaining a job. The student needs more practice with the vocabulary since he still needs to look up some of the words in order to complete his homework. He did well, however, in the sections covering the subjunctive. He expressed that grammar is easier for him than conversation, and so I spoke to him in Spanish during the session and asked him to read the questions out loud as we worked on them.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Thomas in Joliet, IL
The student has a midterm next week, so we reviewed old vocabulary and grammar as well as different writing exercises. We discussed tips for reviewing for a big test, for example a midterm. We took out all his previous tests and quizzes so we can start making our own study guide. Hopefully the teacher will provide him with a review packet for the midterm. We also developed tips and strategies for effectively writing for the midterm. We looked at an old state exam and the student wrote a 100-word response. He expressed more confidence after the session, but I still want to review more vocabulary and grammar because I think he is still struggling with remembering beginner and previous vocabulary and grammar, and level one vocabulary is essential for doing well for the writing section of the midterm.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Sergio in Joliet, IL
The student told me that he'd have a test tomorrow. I guided the student through a mock test that his teacher provided and that is reportedly similar to the test tomorrow. I focused on the student's memorization of the vocabulary (using flashcards) and doing exercises using the subjunctive tenses. Despite struggling with the subjunctive, the student scored 92% on his mock test. As recommended by the student's teacher, I've been keen on guiding the student through the homework that he's been assigned. The student told me this evening that his homework score is now 93%.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Zhan in Joliet, IL
Today I went to karate lesson with the students, and while on the way there, we practiced dialog and I let them watch the Chinese movie "Monster Hunt." They enjoyed it. After the karate lesson when we came back, I played legos with them while speaking Mandarin and we also did some physical exercises with instructions in Chinese. Today's main focus of words and phrases were monster and "I'm busy," and "I need help." We enjoyed playing today.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Maureen in Joliet, IL
Yesterday the student and I went over questions that she will be asked on an upcoming oral exam. The exam covers quite a lot from past work. I encouraged her to practice between now and our next meeting and to continue to go over verbs. We will meet again tomorrow to go over the remainder of the questions.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Adrian in Joliet, IL
Today, we worked mostly on a set of vocabulary sentences the student had to work on. He came up with each sentence, and then I would look through it to make sure he hadn't made any errors. In a few cases, I made sure to help him with wording, which seemed to be his biggest weakness. We also worked a bit on grammar, making sure he understood the differences between using the preterite and imperfect tenses. Overall, he did really well, and he was receptive and wanted to understand the material better, which was great.
