I worked with the student on a board game project for The Odyssey. We began his project together and then he completed it on his own.

Today was a good day- very productive. Today's main focus was English. The student started the essay due in a few weeks. He needs to fill in many quotations, details, facts, and cite all of his sources. It is already coming along nicely.

Phonics Tutoring review by Victoria in Joliet, IL
This was our first session. We started off by speaking about what the student and her mother are looking for, and then I spoke with the student about what she is excited to learn about. Her mother primarily wants to see the student enjoy writing so that she can improve her writing and be ready for 6th grade next year. The student and I talked about her biggest struggles with writing- she feels that she needs to work on her spelling and sentence structure, and she also wants to work on creative writing. I think she mostly needs to work on her confidence and on planning out her writing in order to organize it better. We reviewed an assignment her teacher recently graded, and also reviewed the current assignment she is working on in class. We also went over a few literature terms from class that she didn't understand. Our plan for the remaining month of school is to review assignments she receives and also assignments which the teacher gives feedback. When summer starts we are going to start exploring and practicing different types of writing pieces she will be expected to know (argument, description, research essays; stories, poetry, prose, etc.) and practice self-editing them. I asked her to start journaling about her days, and to take one thing that really happened during her day and use her imagination to make up a different outcome. I also asked her to keep reading everyday!

Phonics Tutoring review by Brittany in Joliet, IL
We worked on reading strategies, and mastered math concepts currently taught in class. The student completed some of her math homework, using a number line to aid with subtraction and addition. I would like to get her more comfortable using other strategies to add and subtract, such as counting on and using her fingers. She read a level F book and shows improvement in sounding out words and slowing down to recognize sight words. We practiced sight words. Next step: We will add more sight words to our deck to practice next week. We will also go over more strategies for addition and subtraction.

The student completed three worksheets with "ar" words, read more of the book "Pandas," filled out a reading log, and read through vocabulary flashcards. He was very attentive to these lessons. He is doing well in comprehension and engaging with the reading. I plan to continue covering letter patterns, practicing reading comprehension, writing sentences, and using flashcards to build strong vocabulary. We will focus specifically on practicing spelling during any extra time at the end of classes.

Phonics Tutoring review by Margaret in Joliet, IL
The student and I finished reading Brave Girl and discussed what had happened in the story. We also figured out what some of the phrases meant using context clues and her personal experiences. I then showed her the formatting of both a nonfiction American Girl book and an Eyewitness Book on Rocks and Minerals: a main idea paragraph with examples in the form of illustrations with informative captions. Since she had remained focused throughout the session, we took the last ten minutes working on her fluency with her self-selected fictional book.
