Session Summaries by ACT Science Tutors

ACT Science Tutoring review by Maddie in Joliet, IL
Today we focused on math and did a brief overview of the other subjects. The student seems much more confident in her accuracy. Timing will be her point of focus until the test Saturday. I suggested doing several subject practice tests to become even more comfortable with the material and her skill in each area.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Abigail in Joliet, IL
Today we focused on math and science practice. The student is improving with memorizing her formulas, and would likely receive a 30 on both tests if she were to take the ACT today. She should practice writing outlines for multiple writing prompts to prepare for our next session.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Max in Joliet, IL
Today we focused on math, and we did many practice problems. Specifically, we talked about volume and surface area of shapes, the formula for graphing circles, slope and graphing equations, and questions about domain. Overall, she did very well today, and she quickly grasped the concepts I was teaching her. For our next session we will be focusing on the science section. I asked her to do a science section or two on her own if she has time before our next session. Overall it was a great session, and I'll see her next week.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Stacie in Joliet, IL
Today we focused on science and English practice. We did timed practice drills from Practice Test #2, including the first two passages from the English test and passages 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 from the science test. The student's accuracy and timing were both very good, and we were able to discuss specific question types and strategies as we reviewed her answers. Before our next session she is going to finish the last two passages from the science test we started today so that we can have an overall science test score as a benchmark.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Jamaal in Joliet, IL
Today we focused on the English section. The student struggles more in this section than he does math. It is a mix of not having the testing skills for English and not understanding all the grammar rules. I gave him a reading section to practice on his own. We will be doing more work on English next week.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Hudson in Joliet, IL
Today we focused on the math section and then did a bit of follow up on the reading section. We worked on time management and on avoiding the trick questions. I tried to demonstrate the benefits of showing one's work on the ACT to avoid confusion later in problems, as well as the benefits of drawing pictures. We also worked on using equations rather than mental reasoning to solve problems, in order to know how to use those equations on future, more difficult examples. I assigned the student multiple online quizzes to complete as homework before our next session, so that we can work together to review them. I think that he mostly needs to practice working with the ACT material and to start working with entire test sections to practice large-scale time management. He also needs to try to raise his critical reading speed to allow for more time to answer questions on the reading section. We will work through these areas in our next meeting.
