SAT Tutoring review by Kalman in Joliet, IL
I met with the student and we discussed a math, a reading comprehension and a writing section that she had completed. She did an excellent job with the writing section and really knocked it out of the park. Similarly, she did very well with math, but had a bit of trouble with one or two problems. I walked her through the problems and showed her how the information in the question matched up with the mathematical concepts being tested. The student had some trouble fitting the reading comprehension questions inside of the time limit. We went over a fresh reading comprehension section, and I showed her how to break down her 25 minutes into portions for completing various tasks - reading questions, reading passages, answering questions, etc. - and I suggested that she do the reading comprehension section in an order that reflected the challenges presented. While I timed her, she completed the long passage reading first - in slightly more than half the time allotted - then moved on to sentence completion and finally the short passages. Not only did she answer the vast majority of the questions in the section correctly, but she even had two or three minutes left over to review her answers. This represents a marked improvement in her performance on these sections and hopefully we can replicate it when she tries another section in anticipation of our meeting on Sunday.

The student and I had an introductory session. We discussed basic test taking strategies and went over the different sections of the exam. We also covered strategies for the writing portion of the test, and I asked her to complete several pages of practice work before our next meeting. We briefly reviewed some of the math content for the exam and she did a fantastic job!

SAT Tutoring review by Folami in Joliet, IL
The student and I had a great session. We spent time discussing the best way to annotate passages and answer questions using the Taco Bell approach. He did really well. He answered some of the more difficult questions and seemed incredibly confident. His homework is to complete a reading passage in his prep book and time himself to determine how long it takes.

The student and I moved on and began tackling passage-based reading questions. We focused our session on asking questions about passages as we read them, in order to reinforce reading habits that will help her stay on topic and focus on the main idea of the passage. This way, she can better avoid tricky answer choices about small details within the passage that at first glance may seem correct.

SAT Tutoring review by Joseph in Joliet, IL
The student and I picked up work from before he left for vacation. The student is eying an October test, his first SAT, which will land towards the beginning of his junior year so he will have plenty of time to readjust. When we got back into the work itself it was somewhat slow coming. The student was making errors in the Writing and Usage section that he hasn't made for a while, and needed some reminding of common question types and errors. That being said he was engaged and picked up on what I was saying quickly, asking smart and attentive questions. His work improved over the two hour session, and I'm hopeful that within the week he's back pacing past pre-vacation levels.
