Session Summaries by ACT Math Tutors

ACT Math Tutoring review by Maddie in Joliet, IL
Today we focused on science, English, and reading. I can see many improvements on science and the student seems much more confident. She also seemed much more confident and skilled in her ability to distinguish proper punctuation for various sentences in the English portion. Her accuracy has definitely risen in the reading section, however I suggest taking a real time practice test to see how the time constraints will affect her.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Liana in Joliet, IL
Today we had our first session! We started by looking at the overall format of the ACT, including the different sections, numbers of questions, and allotted time. In terms of goals for the tutoring sessions, we discussed that we need to determine whether or not to sign up for the ACT or ACT Plus Writing, and what score to aim for on the test. The student took practice questions from each section - English, Math, Reading, and Science - to get a feel for the test. She seems to handle the English questions very well, and got a lot of those questions correct. The Reading and Math sections proved more difficult, but I left her with some practice questions for those sections. Since today was more of a broad overview, the material will definitely get easier as we focus on more specific concepts. I gave her a lot of information today, but she had a great attitude towards it all and seemed really easygoing and willing to learn!

ACT Math Tutoring review by William in Joliet, IL
Today we had our first session. We talked about past results and what may have held her score down. At the end, we also talked about her classes, so I can get an idea of what she's seen and should know already. We spent most of the time working on Reading/Language Arts. I had her do a few short practice tests, both to give me an idea of how she goes through things and to see how I can best help her. We'll likely continue with reading and LA. I'm going to give her a couple sets of math problems for her to do over the week, which shouldn't take too much more than 45 minutes. I know she's got sports and school so I'm trying not to overload too much with the work right now. If she can bring those in for next Saturday so we can talk about the ones she struggled with, that'd be great.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Phoebe in Joliet, IL
Today we looked at Reading and Science. We reviewed time management and the importance of not doing the sections in order. Making quick decisions based on visual cues can improve performance. The student is taking a practice test for homework.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Paige in Joliet, IL
Today we looked at the English and Science sections of the ACT. He struggled a little more with this English section than he did with the one from the last time that he took the ACT, but I think some of the questions he missed were mistakes he easily would have caught had he been able to check back over his answers like he can during an actual exam. He struggles some with comma usage, so I would like to work a lot on that in the future. We also began a Science section. We only were able to get through two passages, but he seemed to struggle more with the comparison passage than the data passage, which is pretty typical. This is something that will get better with more practice.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Harriet in Joliet, IL
Today we made a plan for these four sessions before the ACT, and then covered the science section. The majority of the session covered the strategy to approach the section with: distinguishing between data, experiment, and viewpoint passages, the order to do the passages and the questions within the passages, and when to read/scan vs just finding the answer. We also talked about various things to keep in mind when taking the science section: that all the answers are there, and you can be sure of getting questions correct, to pay special attention to comparative words like increase/decrease or greater/lesser, and to keep track of the question numbers in order to avoid any rebubbling. Next session we will cover one of the remaining sections.
