We discussed chapters 1 and 2 of "The Book Thief" and discussed relevant historical background information. We wrote an essay about stereotypes to help us grasp the themes of the novel. The student will read through the end of part one before our next meeting.

Tutoring review by Patricia in Wilmette, IL
Continued working on ACT prep. Corrected all homework of practice test 1 questions. (She did not do a whole test, just sections and selected, assigned problems.) Worked through with the student each one she had incorrect. She is a quick study and receptive. She missed about half the items overall, but related well to why she had them wrong, why the correct answer was right, and how to evaluate or calculate them accurately. We will review the material again next session. Assigned more homework, with a continuing focus on the English and Reading, because those are the sections in which she has the best chance of scoring well enough for the talent identification program. She was not registered for the optional essay, so we will not spend time on specifically composition.

Today with the student we worked on outlining and planning an essay on the effects of video games on children. He had a short rough draft. I tried to impress on him the importance of being specific in a paper like this, and showed him how to use the university library website to access journals and articles that would help him in his research.
