Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Meagan in Joliet, IL
In this session we reviewed some vocabulary strategies, focusing on root words, suffixes and prefixes. We also discussed looking at the word as a whole to ensure that the beginning of the word is an actual prefix and not just including the letters in the beginning of the word. She was given 10 analogies with bridge sentences to help her keep working on this skill. In math we finished up our probability work. The student commented that it was more difficult for her when the types of problems were mixed up instead of all of one kind, and we discussed how this would relate to her test. We also began working on some geometry skills with basic perimeters of quadrilaterals. We also discussed the practice test the student took over the holiday. I will score this for our next session, but I wanted to talk to the student about how she handled the test emotionally. She said that she used the calming strategies that we talked about and used the break times to help her re-focus.

SSAT Tutoring review by Stephen in Joliet, IL
Student 1 and I worked together first today. We started with some reading passages. We then did some geometry problems. I told her to focus on angles, squares, rectangles, and circles, as these are the concepts from which the problems come. She did well on the basic properties of these figures and I gave her 2 geometry practice sets for homework. Student 2 and I focused on Math word problems today. We went over when and how to ballpark instead of getting an exact answer, and he explained it back to me perfectly. He did very well on basic geometry, rate and proportion, and number property problems. He is struggling the most with setting up word problems as algebraic equations. We went over some examples of how to name the variable and make an equation from it. I gave him a set of general questions and reading problems for homework.

SSAT Tutoring review by Alice in Joliet, IL
The student took a verbal diagnostic test for homework, and she only got one wrong; it was an analogy. This is the best she's done on a verbal diagnostic test so far. We reviewed math concepts that we have studied/learned in previous sessions; union and intersection, complement, and Venn diagram problems with them. I helped her articulate out a step-by-step method for doing union and intersection problems; area and perimeter. She seems pretty solid on these concepts and the formulas, could probably use a tiny bit more practice to make sure she remembers circle formulas and trapezoid. We worked on coordinate plane problems. She was fine with coordinate plane geometry. We worked on analogies and she did very well relationship wise. Her only issues were when she didn't know the vocab. For hw I'll have her define the words and use them in sentences, and give her some more practice problems in slope and union/intersection.

SSAT Tutoring review by Thomas in Joliet, IL
The student and I spent the lesson working on her summer SSAT and ISEE math again. She's basically finished all of the math assignments she was given at this point, and she has improved dramatically with each lesson.

SSAT Tutoring review by Alex in Joliet, IL
The student and I spent the session on reading comprehension, working through a full section. For the first half of the section, we worked together to identify main ideas and to find specific evidence for answers within the passage. I then had him do the second half of the section on his own, which showed some good improvement in his attention to detail. I reiterated to him how important it is to find specific evidence in the text, since he has a tendency to make a guess without referring back to the passage. He will continue to read Mockingbird and look at vocabulary for next time.

The student and I went over how to find equations for parallel and perpendicular lines, then looked at a sample passage about invasive species in the United States. He is already showing a big improvement in speed when working with graphs and equations! He also did pretty well on the reading section.
