I am currently working on an MA at Columbia University Teacher's College, and have a BA in English from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. I spent last year tutoring 5th graders in literacy and math through AmeriCorps, and I plan to use my degree to encourage elementary and middle school students to love and appreciate literature as much as I do.
I love tutoring because I feel that individual attention is an important facet of the learning process. By working one-on-one with students tutors can learn more about students' interests and learning styles, and incorporate them into the tutoring process. Academic subjects can be so much more interesting for students if they feel that the subject has a direct impact on their lives. I love it when a student's face lights up with the realization that she truly understands the concept on which we are working. These kinds of realizations inspire confidence in students, a feeling which only leads to greater learning and achievements in the future.
