Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Andrew in Chino Hills, CA
I began this session by working with Student 1 on synonyms, sentence completions, and reading comprehension. She has a good vocabulary. I was able to give her basic tips, such as using root words and prefixes to select the best answer choice. We also discussed simple test taking strategies, such as eliminating wrong answers. Student 2 and I spent the second half of our session split between writing and Spanish. We did a brief overview of how she should take her brainstorming and organize it into a useful outline. I showed her how to include supporting ideas in the outline to make the writing process easier. We will turn her outline into an essay during our next session. In terms of Spanish, we did a review of direct and indirect object pronouns by having her work on some practice sentences for me. Then we spent time reviewing her vocabulary. I left her with instructions to use a foldable to help with memorizing the vocabulary. I also emailed her mother to suggest that Student 2 create a comic strip using her vocabulary words to help her become more invested in them.

Reading Tutoring review by Jessie in Chino Hills, CA
During this session, I reviewed the student's flower imagery essay with him and reviewed an essay outline for a History assignment. The student had already submitted his flower imagery essay, but he wanted me to look at the essay to see how he could improve his writing. We spent most of the session going over his essay even though he had already turned it in to his teacher, and he thought it was important that we discuss his essay in thorough detail. I was quite happy to see the student have such a positive attitude towards his writing. He isn't solely interested in the grade he receives on a writing assignment-- he wants to learn and grow from each writing assignment he completes. He is also far more receptive to constructive criticism in regards to his writing, so his openness and willingness to grow as a writer show great maturation as a student! After reading his essay, he and I discussed how he was able to identify Shakespeare's use of flower imagery in the play. In his body paragraphs, his ideas lacked smooth transitions, and he often failed to successfully integrate and introduce quotes from the play. We discussed how there should never be block quotes in his academic writing and various techniques for introducing quotes. We also discussed the importance of transitional words and phrases from idea to idea and body paragraph to body paragraph. He grasped everything we discussed, and I am eager to see how his History essay unfolds. The student's History outline is coming along nicely. He has a clear idea of his paper topic and argument. He was unsure where to add more information to his outline, so I pointed out different areas where the historical facts he included could be developed more. For next session, he is to have acquired research from at least three sources.

Today we worked on math skills. Currently the student is working with fractions in school. She does not thoroughly understand them yet so we will be working on conceptual understanding. So far, she does things by memorization.

Reading Tutoring review by Tamara in Chino Hills, CA
The student and I worked on comparing and contrasting information from the reading packet. He read the passages really well. He was also able to answer most of the comprehension questions correctly. I gave him a new reading passage with bold words. He will need to know these words for our next session.

Reading Tutoring review by Chloe in Chino Hills, CA
Today the student said she was feeling "wonderful" about the math test tomorrow! We completed a couple of worksheets about fractions, as she had expressed in a previous session that she was nervous about questions potentially holding a lot of fraction challenges. She did excellently on the different sheets with identifying fractions, comparing fractions, as well as determining which shapes were correctly divided into equal parts. To close the session, she completed a "common core math review packet" in which she got 16 out of 18 standards based questions correct without assistance. The remaining two questions she was able to complete with some additional support and will be reviewing those concepts later on (determining elapsed time, multiple step word problems). It has been a pleasure to work with her and I wish her the best of luck on her exams!
