Hello! I am an incoming dental student at Boston University. I received my bachelor of science in Human Biology from UC Santa Cruz and my masters of science in oral health sciences from Boston University. During undergrad, I tutored college students in molecular biology and after graduating I became a middle school instructor. I enjoy helping students and making difficult material easy to understand. In my spare time, I enjoy crocheting, playing with my cat, running and exploring different cafes in the city I am living in.

I graduated from the University of California with a PhD in Linguistics, specifically Psycholinguistics. So I am either a cognitive psychologist who loves language, or a linguist who loves cognitive psychology. (My dissertation was on the role of memory in language processing.) My most important work, though, has always been as an educator. If you think of the three most important people in your life, I wager all of them are teachers, in some sense. I see teaching as an opportunity to make a positive impact on someone's life; an opportunity that not everyone has. I have taught a broad range of subjects, in a variety of scenarios, but throughout the most powerful part of teaching is that I learn at least as much from my students as they do from me. I have taught humanities (history, writing, philosophy), science (Linguistics, Psychology), and math, but the most rewarding aspect is the chance to change the trajectory of students' life through understanding. In my spare time, I enjoy reading Sci-Fi/Fantasy, working on old cars/machines, and backpacking.
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Literature from University of California Santa Cruz. Since graduating, I have dedicated my time serving elementary and middle school youth through the Americorps as a teacher. I love teaching. During City Year, I focussed on small groups and 1 on 1 interventions in math, ELA, and social emotional learning. During Foodcorps, I taught hands-on, whole class lessons centering the garden, food and culture. Additionally, I have experience facilitating afterschool programs, summer school programs, and camp counseling. While I have experience teaching a variety of subjects, I am most passionate about science, literature and math. I love working with young people. They have such wonderful energy and I learn as much from them as they do from me. Children are capable learners. Teachers are here to instill the belief they can do anything they set their minds to. I love what I do. Outside of teaching, I enjoy making herbal medicine, volunteering at community gardens, meditating and creating art.
I am a graduate student currently working on my PhD in Literature. While I love reading and writing, my favorite part of graduate school has been working as a teaching assistant and helping undergraduate students improve their reading and writing skills. I love discovering students' different interests and personalities and seeing how their own unique knowledges come out in their work. As a TA, I found that students' writing changed the most when we could work one-on-one in office hours -- those are the people who came back to me and thanked me for helping them improve and build on their skills so much. That's what I love about tutoring: it really affords the time and space for me to give personalized, individual attention and feedback.
Hi! I'm Dr. Becca Evans, a biologist and educator with a PhD in Biology and over 10 years of teaching, tutoring, and mentoring experience. I specialize in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, English, Reading Comprehension, Writing, and Study Skills. Throughout my career, I have worked with students ranging from elementary school through college, helping them build confidence, strengthen academic skills, and achieve their goals. Since receiving my credential, I have taught High School and Middle School Language Arts and Drama. In addition to teaching, I've directed multiple productions at the High School level and helped to develop a Visual and Performing Arts Program. As a tutor, I'm most passionate about Literature and Writing. I love helping students with reading comprehension and writing skills. My time in the classroom over the last eight years has given me a lot of experience and resources to help students of all levels improve their skills and confidence. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, and relaxing with family and friends.
Hi! My name's Ari and I've been tutoring math and physics for over 10 years. I really enjoy working with students and helping them to understand a subject I find very interesting. I'm happy to help with material from elementary algebra through multi-variable calculus.
Creating the desire to learn is fundamental to great tutoring. Learning is a lifelong pursuit and I work to encourage this approach with my students. I work to grow this spark and with it my students flourish. What makes me a great tutor is my ability to inspire inquisitiveness in children. My goal is to cultivate an active, curious mind in my students. Completing homework on time and correctly is only part of whole equation.I am a lifelong learner with a restless curiosity. I attended the University of California, Santa Cruz where I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Art and Literature. I specialize in essay writing, grammar and literature, but tutor on a wide variety of subjects.
I am a licensed educator who has worked with children for the past seven years. I have a connection to children and learning. I am well versed in all Language Arts and Math. I mainly work with students in Elementary school. I love seeing the lightbulb come on for students when they start to understand something. I like to make a personal connection with kids and see them as individuals. I meet students where they are and we go from there. I believe in the flexibility of the mind and the ability to keep growing and learning throughout life.
We are on this earth to learn, and to use what we learn to serve others. If you're not doing these two things, you're not living the full, rich life you deserve.I got my undergraduate degree from U.C. Santa Cruz. A few years later I was in Rome, Italy with a Cambridge RSA certificate, teaching English as a Foreign language.I've had a lot of other odd jobs that involved writing and teaching. Eventually I got a teaching credential in science: biology because this was the subject closest to my B.A.I tutor all the natural sciences, as well as English/ESL. My favorite subjects to tutor will always be Italian, science, and writing. Italian is close to my heart because of the years I lived in Italy. But science is the most fun to tutor, because you will usually get to build things, or at least draw some cool diagrams.I also love to teach writing because it's so much fun to see the look on a student's face when he or she realizes how easy it is. I had an amazing English teacher in high school who taught me a few simple formulas for writing. His shortcuts got me through an A.P. History exam, and they helped me all the way through college. I can teach them to you in an hour.If you master a few rules and get enough practice, you can become a strong writer. How you learn is a very personal process. Everyone is unique, and everyone has a unique way of learning. One of the reasons I left my teaching position was frustration over the "one-size-fits-all" style that's forced on us in school. If you're seeking a tutor, you probably prefer not to learn through the single "listen and read" technique that is the basis of most of our educational system. I want to help you learn in your own way.Outside of academia, I'm interested in biking, travel, the environment, and entrepreneurship. I've volunteered for the state parks, Tree People, and similar organizations. Over the course of my life, I've probably traveled more miles on a bike than I've driven.I once followed the route of an ancient Roman road, the Appian Way, across half of Italy on a bike. It took me almost 2 weeks and I'm writing a book about it.I've also started a few home businesses, and lately I've been reading a lot of books on sales and marketing. At the moment I'm helping a real estate agent with his marketing, but some day I would like to run a bike touring company in Italy.
The power of an inspiring teacher is often understated, and in my own experience, it has been my mentors who have lifted me up and inspired me to work harder, learn from my failures, and believe in myself. I hope to be a guiding presence in the life of my students, helping them achieve their goals while developing their academic prowess.I earned my B.S in Molecular, Cell, Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, my M.S in Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine from the University of Southern California, and am working towards my M.D at Rush Medical College.
I'm a Los Angeles native new to Brooklyn! I received my BA in Modern Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz and my MS in Counseling Psychology from California State University, Long Beach. Despite the humanities degrees, I've always been a math and science nerd. My favorite science course was Stars and Stellar Evolution taught by professor Stanford Woosley, one of the preeminent experts on supernovae. My favorite math course was Discrete Mathematics taught by professor Jordan Ellenberg. Professor Ellenberg just published a great book that covers many of the topics from that class called "How Not to Be Wrong: The Power of Mathematical Thinking"!Back in Los Angeles, I worked as a tutor and coached a high school wrestling team. As a tutor, I spent a lot of time working with high school students working on Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, PreCalc, Chemistry, Psychology, and English. I really like working with teenagers because they like to have fun, but they also know how to tackle serious academic subjects.Outside of academia, I train, teach, and compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I love the technical aspects of the sport. I cross train in judo and wrestling. Between these sports, I have over a decade of martial arts experience. I've been a lot of cool places and met a lot of cool people in my travels to train and compete!
I'm a retired attorney with a lot of teaching experience. I've always loved reading, writing, and languages.Regarding standardized tests: I received the highest score on the A.P English exam, a perfect score on the SAT literature exam, and a perfect score on the logic portion of the LSAT.I traveled in my youth and spent significant time in Mexico, Spain, Japan and Argentina. I like meeting new people and have great respect for people from all backgrounds.Learning is one of the best things in life. Even when it is challenging, we all feel joy and accomplishment when learning new things!
Science can change the world and I want to be apart of that change. I am currently a 4th year chemistry PhD candidate at the University of Southern California studying scaling methods for the sustainable synthesis of renewable energy catalysts.
Hello,I'm a recent graduate of the California Institute of Technology in Economics and Computer Science. I was also accepted at Harvard, Princeton, MIT, and Stanford. I have a broad range of interests spanning science, math, engineering, social science, the humanities, the arts, and athletics (I also played on the Caltech basketball team). My background allows me to tutor general college prep, especially the SAT, ACT and the GRE. I love to teach analytical thinking, ranging from advanced Math and Physics to strategies for understanding literature and developing arguments.I've tutored & received tutoring my entire life. My dad started drilling me on multiplication tables at 4 and 2 years later, when my oldest sister came of age, I began working with her. 3 siblings came after her who I worked with every day to improve their mathematical & verbal reasoning, giving them assignments out of workbooks our parents got us, correcting & reviewing their answers. I still help my youngest sibling with her Calculus homework today. My first compensated tutoring gig came the summer before my junior year when I taught local high school & community college students chemistry & physics from my home. Since then I've worked constantly as a tutor, working with a company in various locations throughout the Southland. I specialize in SAT math, having led workshops & boot camps which saw some students improve their score 200 points. In college, I sharpened my tutoring skills against the world's best whetstones. I do not just mean Caltech professors, though they deserve their props. The Institute fosters a collaborative environment where students thrive through teaching and learning from others. You really cannot get by in the school without these skills. Thus, my educational experience has exposed me to many of the effective ways people learn and teach. When I tutor people, no matter what the subject, I keep my utmost focus on patience and encouragement. Even if I find the subject easy, I can harken back to long nights trying to understand complex topics at Caltech which my tutors found easy, and gain inspiration from their patience and encouragement. These experiences fostered in me a love of learning and passing my knowledge onto others.I hope you feel inclined to take advantage of my willingness, no, intense desire to work with you. I plan to remain local indefinitely as I pursue other ongoing ventures.Thank you,Brian
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Cruz. I also hold a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of California, Santa Barbara. I tutor many aspects of English including reading, writing, test prep, literature, grammar, and essay editing. I also tutor any level of Spanish, including test prep for SAT subject tests or Spanish Language AP tests. I also tutor Japanese, clarinet, and public speaking. My favorite subjects to tutor are any involving ESL or foreign language as I have a passion for language learning and teaching. I speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and have also studied Japanese, German, Brazilian Sign Language, and Italian. I would describe my teaching philosophy as friendly but structured. I use lesson plan organization techniques including lesson plan outlines and back-up activities in case a certain activity does not go as planned. I also am familiar with teaching methodologies, learning styles, and how certain methodologies are appropriate for certain learning styles. Outside of Academia I enjoy playing video games, specifically Japanese role playing games (RPGs). I also enjoy unicycling, and juggling.
I am from a teaching family. My mother taught elementary and middle school in the United States for 38 years and then "retired" to Honduras and promptly opened a school for middle-school-age students where she taught for 17 more years. As that school grew, I joined as a teacher and director of the school. I have been teaching students for 30 years, in subjects ranging from phonics to history, from prose to music, from business to computers. My style is all about communication. No subject is "too hard" and no idea cannot be taught as long as we work together to find the language that resonates with the student and brings the ideas into focus.
I have a background in mathematics education that includes teaching at the junior high, high school and collegiate level. I received my credential and Master's Degree in an intensive program at the University of California at Santa Cruz; an institution well known for its excellent education department and strong emphasis on student-directed, project-based learning. I was a multiple-subject educator at a small, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded, non-traditional charter school at the forefront of the project-based, standards-based, early-college movement. I have taught students of all ages in traditional and non-traditional settings.Everything I do with my students is designed to build confidence, develop critical thinking skills and encourage them to believe they can succeed. I strive to see each student as a talented individual and help them to develop a love for learning and a strong belief in their own potential.
I am an outgoing creative type that likes to come up with interesting ways to learn! Whether it be to make up a song, go outside, or do creative brain storms to understand the material, I like to cater learning to the individual.I was an honors student in high school, and really enjoyed it. While getting a degree in Biology at The University of California, Santa Cruz I also loved the subjects of sociology, theatre, history, and writing!I'm relatable and treat you as my equal.
I received my B.S. in Chemistry in 2013 from California Polytechnic State University. I then went on to receive my M.S in Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. While obtaining my Masters' degree, I worked as teaching assistant for biochemistry lectures and microbiology lab courses, and found my love of teaching. Due to my positive student evaluations as a TA, I was offered an adjunct lecturer position for the 2015-2016 school year as the Microbiology Lab and Experimental Biology Lab instructor. I am now working to apply to Physician Assistant programs in New York. While I have primary taught college students, I also have experience working with elementary school students. While obtaining my B.S., I helped establish a program where myself, fellow students, and faculty members of the chemistry department would travel to local elementary schools to perform science experiments demonstrating basic scientific concepts to students. I am always eager to teach, and I believe my teaching style is helpful for students of all ages.I grew up playing soccer for 14 years in New Hampshire (my home state), and continued playing intramural soccer in college, and I have now moved on to coaching. In my spare time, I also enjoy reading, hiking, paddle boarding, and am currently learning how to play the guitar.
I am a graduate of UC Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. I also possess a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Oregon. I am fluent in Spanish and have also tutored students who are learning the language. I am also certified in ESL and love working with students who are learning the English language.
I taught English and creative writing for several years during my graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including first-year English writing courses. I am passionate about helping students of all ages improve their writing skills. I love leading students through the writing process to produce great papers and college application essays, as well as study for AP and SAT exams. I can also help with personal statements for graduate school applications, including the creative writing MFA.Awards and Fellowships at UW-Madison:Campus-wide Teaching Assistant award for Innovation in Teaching, an award given to 15 grad students out of 2200 TAsUniversity Housing teaching award, a student-nominated honorDavid Maraniss Fellow at the School of Journalism and Mass CommunicationHoffman-Halls Emerging Artist Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative WritingIn addition to my experience in academia, MFA in creative writing, and MA in journalism, I have over a decade of experience as a magazine writer and editor. Tutoring mirrors publishing, in that they're both collaborative efforts to train stronger writers to write refined prose. Great progress can be made this way.I teach writing as a process by encouraging students to embrace drafting. We take time to understand the project, brainstorm, follow idea threads, and write first drafts. Then the feedback and revision process begins, which leads to a final, polished piece. I can help at any point on this timeline.I'm excited to help both high school and college students with academic work and test prep, and I can also give you feedback one-on-one with your fiction or poetry project. Please contact me to learn more and schedule lessons."[Emily] is always positive and always has wonderful constructive criticism for my essays. She makes me feel as though she takes time to learn my writing style and genuinely cares about my success in the class. This class has made me enjoy English after hating it for all of high school." --UW-Madison student evaluation
I have a B.S. in Physics from MIT, and a M.Sci. in Astrophysics from UC Santa Cruz, where I conducted research on black holes and exoplanets. I've been doing (and teaching) high level math and physics full time during my stint in grad school, and look forward to passing on my expertise to you.I have extensive teaching experience, with subjects ranging from basic math, to SAT and GRE test prep, to college- and graduate-level physics. I've worked with high school students, 10 year olds, and folks old enough to be my parents, all with great success. If you find math and physics difficult, and are looking for a tutor who can demystify them for you: I would love to help you out!If you love math and physics, and have exhausted other teachers' knowledge but would still like to learn more: I would also love to help you out!In addition to wielding math and science skills for fun and profit, I design and sew clothes whilst half-listening to podcasts about history and technology.
I graduated from the University of California in Santa Cruz, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics. During my time at university, I focused on French, German, foreign language education, and applied linguistics; I also had the privilege of completing a year abroad at the Humboldt University of Berlin, where I studied linguistics in German! After graduating, I worked for three years as a tutor, academic coach, and operations manager of a tutoring company in Berkeley, California. There, I tutored students of all ages in reading, writing, French, German, test preparation, and executive functioning. From there, I moved to Austria for a year under Fulbright Austria as an English language teaching assistant; I worked in two Austrian high schools, learning from a number of skilled local teachers, and developing and teaching my own English lessons. As a tutor, I am a strong believer that no two students are alike, so I adapt my teaching style to each student to help them learn using their strengths while developing the areas they need to improve. Additionally, I like to take a holistic view of a students academic needs to help them move beyond their challenges with a particular subject. In my free time, I love reading, listening to podcasts, learning languages, going to concerts, film photography, exploring my neighborhood, and cooking.
I received my Bachelors from the University of California Santa Cruz in Psychology, graduating Cum Laude. While attending college I had the opportunity to work for the University's Learning Support Services as a tutor and mentor for my fellow students. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Women's Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Writing, and Research. Few things are as rewarding to me as helping others to achieve their goals in and out of academia. I find that passing on healthy work and study skills provides the highest long-term success rate for my students, so they can continue being confident learners even when I am not aiding them. Anyone studying hard deserves to play hard, and in my spare time I love to hike, travel, read, and craft.
I'm a professional journalist and teach kids yoga on the side. I've taught SAT/ACT/AP test prep in the past with great results, and I'd love to help make writing, reading, history and grammar way more fun and accessible for you!
I recently received a PhD in the History of Consciousness program at the University of California Santa Cruz. This renowned interdisciplinary program is concentrated in the humanities while corresponding with other disciplines such as social science, physical science, and the arts. My academic work culminates in a dissertation in which I explore the effects of historical circumstances on cultural production and the ways that the surface features reflected in books, cinema, and art, illuminate the historical process itself. I have taught a variety of undergraduate classes including history, literature and film studies. I have also designed and taught upper division undergraduate seminars and Creative Writing as an instructor of record. My teaching ethos is to guide students toward a comprehensive understanding of the subject through discussion, close readings of texts, and the development of students' writing. My focus on writing, both analytical and creative, is grounded in the recognition that it is through the writing process itself that one comes to a clearer and more integrated understanding of the world. One of the most rewarding experiences as an instructor is to see a student's writing improve and create a pathway toward a proficient and nuanced understanding of a subject. The diversity of undergraduate students I have taught has been inspirational in providing me with a range of skills to better recognize a student's specific aptitudes and thereby develop and amplify their work in both an academic setting and in life in general. I have also traveled extensively which has allowed me to further hone my ability to communicate in various cultural contexts with people who have life experiences different from my own.
As both as an educator and a writer, I've discovered that so much of life involves communication; not only bringing thoughts and feelings "to the surface," but learning how best to articulate and express them, both in written form and verbally. I love to see students gain confidence as they master concepts, integrate ideas, discover truths about themselves and become emotionally invested in the learning process. After all, learning is a blast: it's a lot of fun to learn! To that end, I have taught students from age 5 to 98, in a wide variety of settings and under quite a range of circumstances for more than forty years. Aside from teaching English Composition and ESL at four California community colleges, in Japan for a year, and briefly at The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), I taught poetry reading in over fifty schools to students in three states (K-12) for 25 years through California Poets in the Schools. For over three years, I worked as a High School substitute, subbing in English, History, Biology, Foreign Language and PE classes. When opportunities to teach Screenplay, Fiction and Poetry Writing in California prisons, juvenile detention facilities and a State Hospital arose, I immediately took them up! Such challenges were wonderfully gratifying and provided me with plenty of opportunities to hone my teaching skills. With regards to my education, as an undergraduate in search of a Creative Writing degree, I attended The University of Oregon, The University of California, Santa Barbara and The University of California, Santa Cruz. As a graduate student, I attended The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for my ESL studies and The University of Southern California (USC) for my graduate school work in Creative Writing. I attained a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing and Art (Aesthetic Studies) from UC Santa Cruz. I attained my ESL certification and three other forms of licensure from UCLA and my master's degree in Professional Writing (Fiction and Poetry) from The University of Southern California (USC). Over the last twenty years I have tutored English Composition, English grammar and all levels of ESL, primarily reading, writing and conversation. In terms of special subjects, I tutor Poetry Writing, Fiction Writing and Screenplay. I also have a great deal of experience editing other people's work. The easy answer to my favorite subject is whatever I'm tutoring or teaching at the present time. I love teaching all of the earlier subjects I mentioned, though ESL probably provides the most immediate gratification. Mastering a new language, though difficult, is so rewarding and, at times, thrilling. English is quite challenging for non-native speakers and it always feels like a real privilege to try and guide such students through. In terms of my teaching philosophy and tutoring style, I very much believe in what used to be called the affective domain encouraging students to invest themselves emotionally in subjects that interest them and helping emotionally engage students in subjects that they must "master," but resist. My approach is sort of soft-sell Socratic, in that I pose lots of questions to my students. This helps them learn through the use of critical thinking, reasoning and logic, though we seldom venture into the terminology!
