Reviewed math placement exam. Began taking summer Math Review, which is due on the first day of class. Reviewed and discussed essay on reading from Joyce Carol Oates ("I.D." and "After Black Rock"). Elementary Math Tutoring review by Hannah in Chino Hills, CA
The student and I spent the first 45 minutes of the session exploring how to make equivalent fractions. She was struggling with this concept so I explained that whatever she does to the numerator, she has to do the denominator. For example if she multiplies the top by 2, she has to multiply the bottom by 2. This made sense to her. I then gave her some fractions to find the equivalent fraction of. She was a tad confused about what the multiply or divide the numbers by, so I explained that as long as you do the same thing to the top and the bottom, it doesn't matter what you multiply or divide by, and she understood. We then reviewed long division, something that she is really starting to become comfortable with.

The student and I went over a homework worksheet she had, which she breezed through. It was the type where you solve problems, and each answer gives you a letter, which you put together to solve a riddle. She asked if we could do another similar activity, so I wrote up a worksheet of adding and subtracting fractions (needing to find common denominators) for her to get extra practice. She finished it all correctly, which was great! Then, we played a few minutes of a card game that we invented. It involved making pairs of cards that totaled the same sum.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Toni in Chino Hills, CA
The student worked on comparing and ordering decimals to the thousandths. He was very attentive and positive the whole time! He understood it like alphabetical order; you compare numbers from left to the right. We focused on comparing whole numbers to decimals and whole with decimals. At first, he didn't know what to do with a whole number without an obvious decimal. But he listened and followed the directions I gave and was successful time and time again. He filled in any "blank" places to compare with accuracy. We also read some of his library book and talked about the plot, characters, and prediction.
