Session Summaries by French Tutors

French Tutoring review by Nora in Chino Hills, CA
We spent the first half of the session looking through the student's class materials at her mother's request. Her parents asked that I try to get a sense of the level at which her French class is operating since she goes to a French immersion school. The second half of the session we used a short story to work on reading comprehension and pronunciation, as well as some vocabulary enrichment. We went over a good bit of work that she had done. She did not really struggle much with this session, despite the reading including some structures she had not learned yet. I left her with the short story to finish reading and encouraged her to use the vocabulary that she learned to help her retention.

French Tutoring review by Amy in Chino Hills, CA
Met with the student and discussed her experience and comfort speaking and understanding French. We got to know each other a little bit and talked through my past experience, skills and strategy in teaching language and discussed her goal of being able to speak fluently or at least competently and comfortably on their trip to France this summer. She read for me a short passage from Les Trois Muskatieres. Her French pronunciation was excellent for an adult learning a new language and her willingness to be open with the vocabulary she knew and didn't know was so helpful. She worked to piece together the meaning of the passage she had written and we talked through what learning vocabulary might look like for her. She then took a short competency quiz I had written to assess her knowledge and skill in French grammar and common errors that the native English speaker makes. If we meet again we will go over the results of this quiz and consider how we can work together to improve her technical understanding and competency in French. We discussed that a strategy for learning for her would be to spend time reading out loud so that she felt more comfortable using the language, having me read out loud to her and then working on her understanding/ listening skills in the foreign language and finally spending time having conversations in French over specific/ controlled topics. I suggested she also do this on her own time since effective language learning means spending at least a little time on the language every day.

French Tutoring review by Marcela in Chino Hills, CA
The student is going on a trip to a French-speaking country, and he would like to know how to communicate his most important needs. During this first lesson, we went through the most basic things about French. For example: "Hi," "how are you?" "yes," "no," "I'm sorry," "please," "you're welcome," and so on. He is a great student, and the fact that he speaks Spanish really well and some Portuguese has helped him to understand French. I advised him to practice on his own the expressions that we learned.
